Abstract This is a continuation of our large, long-term project on supernovae, approved by the Cycle 4 TAC for Cycles 5 and 6. Supernovae create the chemical history of the Universe, energize the interstellar gas, and are central to efforts to measure the extragalactic distance scale. Our approach is intensive study of a few objects, such as SN 1987A, SN 1992A, SN 1993J in M81, and SN 1994I in M51, a Cycle 5 discovery, and a bright, new supernova to be discovered during Cycle 6. Our SN 1987A observations include images and spectra of the debris and the circumstellar rings. In our target-of-opportunity studies, we have used HST effectively to obtain unique UV spectra and images of supernovae in nearby galaxies. In Cycle 6 we will observe the continuing evolution of SN 1987A as radioactivity powers the expanding, resolved debris and as the inner and outer rings glow from recombination. Our Cycle 6 program will scrutinize the very late-time emission from three objects observed near maximum light: SN 1992A, SN 1993J, and our Cycle 5 target. Our most adventurous observation is the prompt study of a newly-discovered supernova during Cycle 6. We have not yet observed a classic SN II, or a member of the SN Ib class, two types which promise to be most interesting in the UV. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6437( 43) - 07/10/97 12:24 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will observe five different supernovae in Cycle 6: SN 1987A, SN 1992A, SN 1993J, a generic supernova from Cycle 5, SN 1996XX, and the new object, not yet discove red, SN 1997X. In Cycle 7, we would continue with 87A, 93J (if feasible), SN1997X, and hope to add one target of opportunity, ``SN 1998X''. Cycle 8 observations would continue with 87A, 97X, and 98X while introducing a new target. The details for each future cycle will be spelled out in future proposals, but we propose to keep the program at the current level as long as progress is good. There is no shortage of interesting targets. CVZ issues: In 1993, this program was allocated 40 spacecraft hours for Cy cle 4, and was pencilled in by the TAC for 40 hours in Cycles 5 and 6. We have evaluated the approved Cycle 4 program, using the orbit worksheets in the Cycle 5 Call for Proposals. We find that 40 hours for our program was roughly equivalent to 57 orbits: the Cycle 5 TAC allocated 46 orbits. The supernova and its rings have slowly faded: our request for Cycle 6 comes back up to the original level: 58 orbits to provide nearly constant signal-to-noise in the data. SN 1987A spends time in the CVZ, and we have examined the spacecraft orientation for those dates to assure ourselves that the diffraction spikes from stars 2 and 3 do not cross the image of the debris and that guide stars are available. This would be the only CVZ opportunity before Jan '97. We request this time because it will allow a much deeper exposure in the emission lines of the outer loops. SN 1987A: SN 1987A has been the object of our Cycle 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 observing programs. We have used the FOS to obtain spectra from 1650-9200A using gratings G190H, G270H, G400H, G570H, and G780H with the red side detector. Since the supernova is close to two bright neighbor stars, we have used a careful offset acquisition, starting with a binary acquisition of the FOS offset star, a peak- up on that star, then an offset to the supernova debris. We now have confidence that scattered light from star 2 (a B star) will not over whelm the supernova in the UV, so we will extend our observations to G160L in Cycle 5 and (if all goes well) use G130H and G190H in Cycle 6. Because the outer ring passes through the FOS aperture when it is centered on the debris, we will also improve our knowledge of the outer ring excitation and composition with these observations. By observing with the high dispersion gratings, we can easily separate the wide emission lines of the debris from the narrow lines of the outer ring. The supernova is surrounded by the inner ring of circumstellar material, whose spectrum we also wish to measure. After accumulating the supernova spectrum, we would move from the supernova debris to the ring (which is less than 1" away) to accumulate a spectrum at the bright location which we have studied in Cycle 4. This part of the inner ring should exhibit the first signs of the impact from the debris. Although we do not expect that to happen for several years, our observations will show the conditions before impact. It is important to keep these observations grouped so that the ring spectrum is obtained using the telescope position established by the debris spectrum. We can predict what it will take to get a decent spectrum: 14 orbits for the debris and 10 for the ring. We will do this just once in Cycle 6. During the spectra, we request parallel time observations of the LMC. If this is technically feasible, we would prefer UBVRI. PHASE 2 note: We will observe SN 1987A with the FOS using the G190H, G270H, G400H and G570H gratings. This will require 11 orbits in two visits. The G160L will not be used as no improvement in S/N over the cycle 5 observation will be obtained. In Parallel to these observations we will take WFPC2 exposures. We require at least 2 exposures in each filter UBVRI, the shortest exposures for the V (F555W) and the longest in the U (F336W). We request the 2 visits (#1 and #2 below) be seperated by as little time as possible. Hopefully using the same quide stars to have the parallel observations at the same location. The TAC did not allocate observation of the Circumstellar ring. total orbits 11. The other set of observations for SN 1987A is a set of photometric measures. These data will be used to continue the light curve of SN 1987A, and they need adequate signal to be useful for measurements of the source size and shape using PC1 in WFPC2. The filters are F255W, F336W, F439W, F555W, F658N ([N II] emission from the rings), 675W, F814W, and F502N ([O III] emission from the rings). We will put significant observing time in Cycle 5 and Cycle 6 into the emission-line imaging, since it is important to lower the surface-brightness threshold for com parison with interacting-wind models for the origin of the outer rings. If we a re awarded time in the CVZ, we will use the increased efficiency to boost the Cycle 6 integration time in the [O III] filter from 8250 sec to 21000 sec, and the [N II] integration from 5500 sec to 10800 sec. Continued observations with the PC offer the best opportunity to monitor the point-by-point recombination of the rings. PHASE 2 note: We will be observing SN 1987A with the WFPC2 at 2 different epochs. First we request an observation early in cycle 6 (July - Sep 1996) of 2 orbits with the F658N filter. The ring as shown signs of brightening and addition observations are needed. The WFPC2 has a 47 degree shift from the v2-v3 axis, therefore the WFPC2 observations (visits #3 and 4) will require an absolute orientation of either 5, 95, 185, or 275 degrees. This will avoid placing the diffraction spikes of nearby stars 2 and 3 on the target. The early epoch observation (visit #4) can be completed at 95 +/- 15 degrees. This will place the observation in July-Sept 1996. The second epoch (visit #3) can be completed at 5 +/- 20 degrees which would put the observation in Dec/Jan 1997. If needed, we can release this requirement to make the observation more shedulable before the next repair mission deadline. total orbits: 10 SN 1992A: Our observation of SN 1992A is very simple: we intend to integrate in the F555W filter, where we made a positive detection in Cycle 4 in an integration time of 3600 sec. The proposed observation would be 3 orbits, which should give a threshold for detection near m = 27. PHASE 2 note: We request this observation to be completed as early in cycle 6 as possible. Even before the end of cycle 5 is fine. Total orbits: 3 SN 1993J: For SN 1993J in M81, we have FOS data from 1993, we will have images and spectra from 1994, and we plan to have a UV spectrum from Cycle 5. Our acquisition method is to acquire an offset star using a binary search, peak up on that star, then offset to the supernova, and then to accumulate the blue side spectrum. The gratings are G160L and G270H. We expect to continue our photometry of SN 1993J from the ground. PHASE 2 note: We plan on observing SN 1993J in the CVZ. There is only 1 opportunity in cycle 6 for this requirement (Jan 97). If we can't get that time, we will release the CVZ requirement and make the observations fit into 'regular' orbits. Total orbits: 6 SN 1995XX: We will construct the late-time light curve for SN 1995XX, our Cycle 5 target of opportunity, which will already have an extensive ground-based light curve. We will make B, V, R and I measurements with WFPC2 in 2 orbits. PHASE 2 note: AS of April 15, 1996 a target has not yet been selected. Total orbits: 2 SN 1996X: The most difficult observations will be those of the not yet di scovered supernova SN 1996X. Our experience with SN 1992A, SN 1993J and SN 1994I shows we can assemble the information needed to make HST observations in a day or two. Our hope is to be placed into the observing schedule within 5 days of notification, and then to follow up with observations 30 days later and 300 days later. For the earliest spectrum, we use a three level target acquisition on the bright supernova to insure a safe and successful acquisition, then accumulate an FOS spectrum in the UV using G190H, G270H, and G400H. This takes 3 orbits. The second spectrum, nominally at 30 days, is the same but with increased exposure times. This takes 5 orbits. The third spectrum, at 300 days, will use an offset star whose position we will measure in the guide star system coordinates. We will make a binary acquisition of the offset star, move to the supernova, and then peak up before accumulating the UV spectrum for 6 orbits. Two orbits p rovide enough time for images at a late stage in Cycle 6. SN 1996X will become a target for late-time observations in Cycle 7, when we will obtain the very late time light curve. PHASE 2 note: Object not yet determined. Total orbits: 16 Real Time Justification ----------------------- Target of opportunity: SN 1996X is a target of opportunity for a supernov a brighter than mag 14. The probability of having such an event in Cycle 6 is near unity: a recent 8-year span produced 14 suitable supernovae. Early obse rvations are best for studying the UV, which declines rapidly. Observations within 5 days of notification would be adequate. If the supernova is in our galaxy, a more extensive program will be proposed for Director's Discretion time. One of the great strengths of the SINS collaboration is that it includes observers who have access to a wide variety of instruments and who are dedicated to the study of supernovae. The objects we study in SINS are the objects we would study extensively in any case. Collectively, we have a Target of Opportunity program on IUE, regular access to Keck and the Lick 3m (Filippenko), CTIO (Suntzeff, Phillips), ESO (Leibundgut), the MMT (Kirshner), McDonald (Wheeler), a long term program at KPNO for supernova photometry on the WIYN, mail-order spectra at the Whipple Observatory 1.5 meter, an automated telescope at Berkeley for photometry and the 1.2 meter at Whipple. Panagia is part of the program to observe supernovae with the VLA.
