Abstract Observations with HST of the intrinsic EUV spectrum of the up to now unique high- redshift QSO HS 1700+6416 has opened a new window of research: , Quantitative abundance studies (C N O Ne .....) in the halos of early galaxies via high- redshift metal absorption line systems (OVI to OIII, NIII- NV, NeIII-NeVII, SIII-SV, CIII, IV...); measurement of shape and intensity of the ionizing UV background; first study of HeI at high redshift. , In the course of the Hamburg wide angle QSO surveys and subsequent IUE observations we have recently succeeded in discovering one more unabsorbed high- redshift (z=2.90) QSO with comparable UV flux that allow medium resolution spectroscopy with HST. Originally two other QSOs were proposed to be observed but due to the importance of this lately discovered QSO (after the deadline of phase 1 proposals) we were allowed to change the target by Bob Williams. , We propose to take GHRS G140L LSA spectra for Lambda < 1700Angstrom and FOS high resolution spectra for LambdaLambda 1700 - 3280Angstrom with the aim (i) to measure C, N, O, Ne abundances in several LLSs and metal line systems in order to check and extend the results of enhanced O/C and Ne/C ratios (ii) to determine the shape and intensity of the ionizing UV background, in particular as a function of redshift (iii) to measure HeI 584, 537 as well as the HeI Gunn-Peterson effect more reliably (iii) to study the Ly- alpha forest in the yet unexplored range 1<=z<=1.7 in another line of sight (iv) to study the EUV energy distribution of QSOs and QSO emission lines for lambda_rest >= 295 Angstrom. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6449( 6) - 03/13/96 07:54 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to take GHRS low resolution spectra 1150 to 1750 Angstrom and FOS high resolution spectra 1600 to 3270 Angstrom of the unabsorbed high-redshift QSO HE-2347-4342 (Visibility 54 min): With a flux of >= 2 cdot 10 ^-15 erg cm^- 2 s^-1 ang^-1, an S/N of 30 can be reached in 15 min. with FOS G270H at 2800Angstrom, and in 30 min. at 2300Angstrom (1 orbit). G190H requires 120 min. for a typical S/N of 30 (3 orbits). The range 1200 to 1500Angstrom, GHRS G140L (LSA), requires 400 min (9 orbits) for an S/N=20, while it is too expensive to cover the range 1500 to 1650Angstrom with GHRS (>= 15 orbits.). Altogether 13 orbits are requested. This QSO cannot be observed with STIS at a resolution useful for absorption line spectroscopy.
