Abstract With WFPC images of 14 rich clusters of galaxies with redshifts 0.18 <= z <= 0.55, we have found that the blue galaxies present in unexpectedly large numbers in these clusters (the Butcher-Oemler Effect) are predominantly disk galaxies whose Hubble types, colors, and luminosities are similar to those found in local field galaxy populations. The data also show that mergers and tidal interactions were apparently more common in younger clusters; these may contribute to the disappearance of spiral galaxies by the present epoch --- the remaining puzzle. Many of these spiral galaxies show unusual, disturbed patterns of star formation. These abnormalities may be due to the cluster environment, but other data suggest that we may be witnessing the last phases of the formation and evolution of galactic disks. We propose in Cycle 6 to observe the outer fields in A851 (CL0939+4713) at z = 0.41, and in Cycle 7 CL0016+1654 at z = 0.55; this would be the first extensive imaging of high-z clusters outside their cores. Such observations can be used to separate intrinsic (cosmological) from environmental effects in the rapid evolution of disk galaxies, and to establish the importance of galaxy mergers relative to tidal processes that produce similar morphologies. They will also be important for investigating the star -formation history of ellipticals outside cluster cores, and provide a powerful probe of the cluster potential through the measurement of gravitational lensing in the weak field limit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6480( 11) - 02/08/99 09:45 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ In Cycle 6 we propose to ``tile around'' the central field of A851 (CL0939+4713). For A851 the central field is already in hand. Exposures of each of the outer fields will also be 2-orbit exposures. A single outer field in A851, observed in F555W/F814W, is already available from our Cycle 4 observations. Unfortunately, this fields contain too few galaxies to allow us to robustly test for differences between the core and supercluster populations. Rather than repeat these pointings again we have elected to combine the F555W and F814W images to produce a ~ R view of the galaxies within these fields, and integrate this into our R survey of the remainder of the field. We are thus only requesting 7 pointings in A851. For Cycle 7 we will propose to do the same for CL0016+16. The central field of this cluster has a post-refurbishment image in the archives. Because of its greater redshift, we anticipate that CL0016+1654 will require 3 orbits per pointing, but we will be able to reasess this based on the quality of our 2-orbit Cycle 6 exposures. These mosaics will provide a continuous mapping over an 8' x 8' area, except for the missing section around each PC chip. The typical galaxy will lie at r ~ 160 arcseconds, equivalent to 670 h^-1 kpc at z = 0.4, or many core radii from the cluster center. To calculate the number of expected cluster members, we take A370 as an example and use the cluster profile from Couch (1981) and the field counts from Couch & Newell (1984). We calculate that, to I = 22, we expect 158 cluster and 102 field galaxies in our 9 WFC fields (80'' x 80'') at 60" < R < 120", and 208 cluster and 170 field in our 15 fields at 120" < R < 180". Thus, there should be hundreds of cluster galaxies in the outer zones and contamination from field galaxies should still be tolerable. Exposure times are based on our previous Cycle 4 experience: because the aim is to cover a large area, we propose to reduce the exposures to the bare minimum --- two single-orbit exposures for each field. A ``CR--SPLIT'' for each will give us four images for each field, sufficient for cosmic ray and hot pixel removal. These exposures will be sufficient to classify most galaxies with I < 22, and many fainter. We have chosen the F702W filter to maximize S/N and observe a rest wavelength which approximates the B band, well suited for morphological comparison at z = 0 and with other cluster work. The F702W passband is also very efficient for the study of distant star-forming galaxies seen through the cores of our clusters. The potential well of the foreground cluster acts as a gravitational lens, distorting and magnifying the images of these distant galaxies. The strength and direction of this distortion field can be used to chart the distribution of mass within the cluster (Fig. 3). The wide field of our proposed survey will allow this to be done to very large radii, thereby connecting the high density environment of the cluster core with the lower density regions in the surrounding supercluster. Knowledge of the mass distribution on such large scales is essential to understand the role of halo stripping in destabilizing disks as they fall into the cluster potential. When combined with our morphological mapping of the cluster galaxy population, these lens maps will thus provide an important insight into the role of halo stripping, mass substructure and cluster mergers in the evolution of cluster galaxies and the creation of the morphology-density relationship in distant clusters. These data will also bear directly on the related issue of the fate of the spirals that once traversed these clusters. As we reported above (see also Fig. 2), our data show remarkably tight relations with very little scatter for ellipticals in the central regions of clusters . This seems to argue against a recent ``merger'' origin for any substantial number of these ellipticals. However, it is frequently argued that the ellipticals in the cores of rich clusters are the only ones that are truly old, and that those further out in the cluster could be significantly younger. With HST images of the outer regions, and ground based B and Gunn r images, we will be able to check the assertion that Sigma(U- V)_0 increases in lower-density environments. NOTE: Observations have been broken up into separate visits for greater ease of scheduling. All observations have been set to the absolute ORIENT value U3=135D, and the CR-SPLITs are now explicitly defined by multiple individual exposures. Finally, it has been determined that single-star guiding is acceptable if necessary. - Ray A. Lucas - 04/01/97 Real Time Justification ----------------------- None Adequate ground-based photometry already exists for these clusters. Dressler has already obtained spectra of approximately 50 galaxies in the outer zone of A851. This will help in the discrimination of cluster galaxies from the field. With a guaranteed allotment of 8 nights annually on the 200-inch Hale Telescope to use the COSMIC camera and spectrograph, Dressler will continue spectroscopic studies of the target galaxies. Team members have also secured time for such observations at the Herschel, AAT and NTT telescopes and will continue to seek further support as part of this new proposal.
