Abstract We propose to search for chromospheric mass flows or stellar winds from the metal- poor halo field giant HD216143 using HRS spectra of the 2800 Angstrom Mg II h and k lines. The emission cores of these lines are formed, in part, in the upper regions of the extended chromosphere of a red giant, and their profiles are sensitive to mass motions within the chromosphere. In addition, circumstellar material can produce a blueshifted absorption feature in the wings of the chromospheric emission profiles. Thus the Mg II h and k emission lines provide good diagnostics of mass outflows from red giants. By comparing the results for HD216143 with those for several globular cluster giants of higher intrinsic luminosity observed with HRS in Cycle 1 we plan to address the following questions concerning mass loss from Population II red giants: a) Over what luminosity range on the giant branch does mass loss take place? b) Do the characteristics of the mass loss change with evolution to higher stellar luminosities? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6511( 5) - 06/25/96 16:31 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The key to this project is to obtain high signal-to-noise spectra of the Mg II h and k lines of HD216143, so that the profiles of the chromospheric emission features in the h and k line cores can be accurately mapped, and evidence of mass motions sought. Multiple exposures on HD216143 will be made over a period of two orbits. Four exposures of 761.6 seconds and one of 870.4 seconds are included in the observing sequence, together with an exposure of the onboard calibration lamp in order to provide the most reliable wavelength calibration of the h and k emission line profiles. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None Calibration Justification ------------------------- An exposure of a calibration arc is included in the observing sequence so as to optimise the accuracy of the wavelength calibration. The detection of velocity shifts in the Mg II h and k line cores, as well as the detailing of the precise line shapes, are important goals of this project, for which the most reliable wavelength calibration is needed.
