Abstract It is thought that wind interaction between the AGB and post- AGB winds is the dominant dynamical effect in the evolution of protoplanetary nebulae (PPNe) and the planetary nebula shaping. Under this framework, a diffuse and fast bipolar outflow, ejected by the post-AGB star, impinges with a strong effect on the the slow but dense AGB shells. Shocked gas has been observationally identified in PPNe. Molecular mm-wave emission has been shown to probe the low-energy material after the shock acceleration, and optical line emission has been used to study the high-energy shocked gas in these objects. Excitation characteristics are found which are similar to those of interstellar Herbig-Haro objects. However, the spatial resolution of existing data, worse than 1", is insufficient to resolve the energetic shock features (bow shock and countershocks), the study of which needs a spatial resolution as high as 0.1". As a result, the location and structure of the shock fronts remain practically unknown (in contrast to the case of interstellar shocks), which is a basic handicap for our understanding of the protoplanetary evolution. We propose to perform observations of atomic line emission in four well studied PPNe, using the WFPC2 and a set of five spectral filters in the visible. The exceptional quality of the refurbished HST imagery will yield a spectacular advance in this field. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6533( 4) - 06/10/96 13:12 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ In summary, we propose to image the protoplanetary nebulae M1 -92, OH231.8+4.2 (QX Pup), CRL618 (V353 Aur) and M1-91 (PK 061+03 1) using the WFPC2. Five spectral filters are required: F673N, F631N, F656N, F502N and F547M. The intensities of the nebular features we want to map are shown in table 1. The interest of the filters and some details on the exposure time calculations are discussed on the text (Sect. 3). The requested exposure time and camera are specified below. We ask for a total of 16 orbits. begintabular|l|cccc| filter & M1-92 & OH231.8+4.2 & CRL618 & M1-91 , F673N(SII) & PC, 1 orb & WFC, 1 orb & PC, 1 orb & WFC, 1 orb , F631N(OI) & PC, 1 orb & WFC, 1 orb & PC, 1 orb & WFC, 1 orb , F656N(HAlpha) & PC, 1/2 orb & WFC, 1/2 orb & PC, 1/2 orb & WFC, 1/2 orb , F502N(OIII) & PC, 1 orb & WFC, 1 orb & PC, 1 orb & WFC, 1 orb , F547M(cont.) & PC, 1/2 orb & WFC, 1/2 orb & PC, 1/2 orb & WFC, 1/2 orb , priority & 1 & 1 & 2 & 3 , endtabular Real Time Justification ----------------------- As we have discussed, we are currently observing protoplanetary nebulae in molecular lines. We have successfully applied for high-resolution VLA observations of radio continuum in M1-92. It seems that a component of the radio emission from this source comes from the bipolar lobes, being possibly due to shock excitation. These data will probably offer a complementary view of the high-excitation gas in this source. ISO telescope time has also been allocated to observe M1-92, OH231.8+4.2, CRL618 and M1-91 (together with other similar objects). We will measure with ISO the intensity of a number of FIR atomic lines and will map the dust continuum; such data will also probe the shocked dense material, but with low spatial resolution.
