Abstract We propose to to investigate the origin and stellar destruction of the light elements Li, Be, and B by observing B abundances in a unique population of halo stars which lack Be. Li is produced in the Big Bang and its abundance in halo stars constrains primordial nucleosynthesis and the baryonic density. Be and B (and more Li) should be produced later by cosmic ray spallation as the galactic halo forms, and the evolution of Li, Be, and B is now being used along with that of Fe/H and O/H as a powerful discriminant between different models of the chemical and dynamical evolution of the galaxy. Light element abundances can be used to test the theories mentioned above only if they have not been altered by destruction in the stars, and a number of respected theorists have presented models which predict some destruction. We have found 6 halo stars in which Be is missing or very weak. Five of these also have undetectable Li, but in one, Li is normal. Observing B in these stars should allow us to decide if is this is clear evidence of stellar destruction. The case of the Li-normal, Be-weak star is especially interesting, since this cannot be due to known destruction mechanisms. They all destroy more Be and B than Li (which burns at a lower temperature). If B in that star is shown to have the same deficiency as Be, it would be evidence of spatial variation of element production in the early galaxy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6534( 10) - 03/31/96 19:28 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ All observations will be made with the G270M grating of GHRS, similar to our past B observations. The computation of orbits and exposure times has been scaled from the star HD76932, which we have studied in this particular spectral region, because of the similarity of its physical characteristics with the other target stars.
