Abstract We propose to obtain high resolution WFPC2 images of four proto-planetary nebulae (PPN) found to show bipolar morphologies in ground-based observations. Such high quality images of PPN will help us to determine the origin of such interesting substructures as halos, ansae, and knots, and to answer the question of whether the bipolar morphologies observed in planetary nebulae are the result of nurture (due to shaping by interacting winds) or nature (inheritance from their AGB progenitors), and when such morphologies develop in the course of post-AGB evolution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ We propose WFPC2 imagery of a sample of 4 proto-planetary nebulae, which show bipolar structures and/or some extended emission, in the F606W. We have used the programs of the WFPC2 Exposure Time Calculator (WFPC2-ETC by Adorf, Biretta and Suchkov 1995) to obtain exposure times for each objects based on the size and the magnitudes measured from the ground (Langill et al. 1996). Take an example of IRAS17441- 2411. It has total magnitudes of 15.64 and 12.92 in V and I respectively and a size of about 9.8" x 5.2". This is a bipolar reflection nebula, with its north lobe being brighter. There is also very faint diffuse emission in the outmost edge of both the two lobes. The WFPC2-ETC results indicate that a 1000 sec exposure will give S/N = 15 for the F606W filters. Similar results are obtained for IRAS17150-3224 (V=14.44, I=12.33, size of 16.2" x 8.5"). and IRAS 17245-3951 (V=15.48, I=13.13, size of 4.7" x 3.4"). S/N = 26 can be obtained for IRAS 16594-4656 (V=14.6, I=12.0, size of 9" x 6") with an exposure time of 1000 sec for the F606W filter. Taking into account the CR- SPLIT for each exposure and overheads, one orbit is required for each target.
