Abstract We propose a systematic imaging and spectroscopic investigation of comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp). The comet will be monitored over a wide range of heliocentric distances, providing unique information on the sublimation behavior of this unusual object. The images will be used to place sensitive constraints on the size of the nucleus, search for possible companion nuclei, and examine the near-nucleus coma morphology for evidence of jets and shells. Spectroscopic exposures will allow us to place constraints on the source of cometary activity at large heliocentric distance and detect the onset of water sublimation. If near-perihelion observations are permitted, we will conduct deep searches for new species at unprecedented sensitivity, compile an inventory of the important C-, H-, N-, O-, and S-bearing species in the nucleus, measure the OD/OH ratio, and possibly even physically resolve the nucleus. If this comet achieves its expected brightness, the quality of the HST near-perihelion data will truly be spectacular and will provide fundamental, new insights into the nature of comets. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ This is the Cycle 6 program on Comet Hale-Bopp (C/1995 O1). We were awarded a total of 18 orbits of observing time. We will be observing during four different epochs: late-July to early-August 1996, mid-September 1996, mid- to late-October 1996, and early- to mid-March 1997. The latter observations will be executed only if the normal solar elongation constraint is over-ridden and the second servicing mission is delayed. Observations during the first three epochs (i.e., during 1996) all employ the same strategy. Each consists of two visits: the first has one orbit devoted to PC imaging and the second has three orbits devoted to FOS spectroscopy. Observations during the last epoch (i.e., during March 1997) consist of six visits with 1 orbit per visit (due to the limited visibility window per orbit, all of these latter observations will be done under GYRO control following a GS ACQ in a nearby field). The first visit has one orbit of PC imaging, visits 2 and 3 are for FOS spectroscopy, visit 4 is for GHRS low res spectroscopy, and the last two visits are for GHRS hi res spectroscopy. Even though there is only one target for this program (Comet Hale -Bopp), we have defined a separate target number for each of the four observing epochs so that we can use different orbital elements for each period and also keep track of what we are doing. Please note that the REMEMBER OFFSET capability is used in this program. Based on our analysis of the PC images, we will want to uplink pointing corrections for the subsequent spectroscopic observations. Since we may also uplink an offset pointing prior to the PC images, the remember offset table should be setup with two entries: the first is the one to be used prior to the PC images (and which may very well be zero for the 1996 Hale-Bopp observations) and the second is the offset determined from measurements made on the PC images. Both offset commands should be executed prior to the spectrograph observation. The offset values are named "HALBPx" below and there is a pair of such values for each visit. Within a single visit, we request that the same GS pair be used for all orbits, whenever possible. We will use GUID TOL = 0.2" for all visits to permit using the GS Handoff capability, if the latter looks attractive. We also use SCHED = 100% in order to increase scheduling flexibility. If the activities in the imaging orbit over-run the target visibility window, then you should trim the THIRD F439W exp time to get under the limit.
