Abstract Initial HST results from imaging of disks around pre-main sequence stars provide compelling justification to observe a broader sample of young stars. We request time to image with WFPC2 the circumstellar environment of nearby pre-main sequence stars with compact nebulosity indicated by molecular line emission and significant linear polarization. The tenfold increase in angular resolution and the stability of HST's point spread function enables high dynamic range imaging on 15 AU scales unreachable from the ground which are necessary to directly study circumstellar nebulae. These images will allow us to: o Characterize the size, surface brightness, and morphology of circumstellar disk/envelope systems for a sample of pre-main sequence stars spanning a range of evolutionary states, from the earliest time at which young stars become optically visible in the midst of infalling gaseous envelopes, to the epoch in which accretion ceases and the disks become optically thin, perhaps as a result of planet-building episodes; o Investigate the morphology of ionized outflows powered by energetic winds driven by pre-main sequence stars or accretion disks to assess their impact on the evolution of protoplanetary disk/envelope structures. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6681( 9) - 04/06/98 15:01 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Real Time Justification ----------------------- Not Applicable Calibration Justification ------------------------- No additional calibrations requested.
