Abstract Hyper-luminous IRAS galaxies emit an enormous amount of power (>10^13LSUN) in the far infrared. This emission is attributed to illuminated dust. These galaxies are important a) because of their huge power and b) because they are seen at cosmological redshifts. The major power source of the FIR illumination is still disputed. While most such galaxies have an AGN it has been argued that star formation is the primary energy source. There may also be an intimate connection between AGN and star formation activity. In either case these objects may represent a very important phase in galaxy/AGN evolution. The two most notable objects in this class have recently been shown to be gravitationally lensed with correspondingly overestimated luminosities. It is important to establish if the same is true for other hyper-luminous galaxies. Tidal interactions appear to play a vital role in triggering the activity of ultra-luminous objects at lower redshift. Yet not all objects show signs of interactions. If any hyper-luminous objects do not appear to be interacting new triggers will have to be invoked. This proposal seeks high resolution imaging of a sample containing a large fraction of the most luminous FIR objects known, to: 1) assess the contribution of nuclear and star-burst components; 2) identify lensed sources; 3) investigate whether interactions/mergers trigger the activity. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ In order to detect faint companions and the density of the local environment we want to go to a similar depth for all targets. We selected 3 X 600s exposures in wide I (F814W). This amounts to one orbit per object. A feature with blue surface brightness of 23 mag/arcsec^2 and irregular galaxy spectrum would be detected in this band with SNR/pixel of 4.7. Our chosen depth allows us to detect a b=27 point source at around SNR of 4.5. This band is used by the HST deep survey. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None Calibration Justification ------------------------- None Additional Comments ------------------- All objects will have SED measured over the entire ISO spectral range with the exception of PSC09104+4109. PG1148+549 will have its SED from 4.8micron to 200micron measured in the ISO GT Programme PG1634+706 will have its SED from 4.8micron to 200micron measured in the ISO GT Programme on six separate occasions All the remaining galaxies will have their FIR (5-200micron) SED measured as part of the ISO open time proposal RMCMAHON_HYPR_1 (PI R. McMahon, Co-I M. Rowan -Robinson et al.), which was awarded around 16000s priority 1 time. section FSC1530+3252 has been observed with ASCA by McMahon and his colleagues and preliminary results indicate that it has also been detected with a similar luminosity to IRAS FSC 10214+4724. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Data Distribution Media: 8MM Blocking Factor: 10 Ship To: PI_Address Ship Via: UPS Email: , ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6740( 8) - 01/03/97 10:57 - [ 1] TARGET LIST a) Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 FSC00235+102 GALAXY,ULTRALUMINOUS IR RA=00H 26M 07.11S +/- J2000.
