Proposal For 3. Cycle GO 6 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Investigators Contact? PI: Jay Goguen Jet Propulsion Laboratory CoI: Joseph Veverka Cornell University N CoI: Torrence Johnson Jet Propulsion Laboratory N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Abstract We propose to construct ~200 km resolution global maps of the opposition brightness surge for each of the 4 Galilean satellites to support and complement Galileo mission science investigations. The 2 best observed satellite surfaces are known to exhibit both inter- and intra-satellite variability. Callisto's leading hemisphere brightness surge is twice the amplitude of its trailing hemisphere surge. Europa's surge spans only 1 degree of phase angle, alpha, while Callisto's spans 5 degrees. For 2 weeks in early July 1996, these satellites will be observable with alpha < 2 degrees. Time critical acquisition of WFPC2 images during this period will allow ~90 degree longitude sampling of a full rotation of all 4 Galilean satellites at 0.05 < alpha < 1.3 degrees. From these photometrically calibrated images combined with similar image sets acquired at alpha ~ 6 degrees and alpha ~ 10degrees, we will construct global maps of the very small alpha opposition surge with ~200 km spatial resolution for each satellite. Similar global small Alpha coverage will not be obtained with the Galileo spacecraft due to very limited opportunities available for high spatial resolution, small alpha imaging. This HST investigation will not only yield the definitive study of the small alpha photometric properties of these icy satellite surfaces, but will likely lead to a better understanding of the ubiquitous opposition surge phenomenon by revealing the relationship between variations in the opposition surge and surface geological, morphological, and spectral distinctions to be studied from Galileo. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6752( 41) - 09/02/99 11:31 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Fig. 2 shows the variation of phase angle during the 1996 apparition of Jupiter. The most time-critical period for this investigation is the period of alpha < 2 degrees in early July 1996. Fig. 3 shows the minmum phase angle attainable for each longitude for all 4 satellites in early July. Fig. 4 is a strawman case showing the ~uniform distribution of longitudes on all 4 satellites that can be sampled during one set of 6 orbits in early July. At other times, a similar sampling of longitudes in 6 carefully selected orbits during a ~2 week interval will be possible. These figures are useful for understanding the feasibility of the proposed observations in the requested time and the time-critical constraints. On each orbit, a WFPC2 image through at least 1 filter (nominally F547M) with the PC will be acquired for each satellite (4 objects). Because these objects are bright, exposure times are short (~1 second) and most of the orbit visibility period (50 minutes) is used for guide star acquisition for the 1st satellite (8 minutes), small angle manoevers under gyro control to point to successive satellites, (3 x ~5 minutes each) and instrument overhead (4 x 6 minutes = 24 minutes, no-cr split). Any remaining time in each orbit, currently estimated at 3-4 minutes, will be used to acquire additional images through a shorter wavelength, narrow-band filter (e.g. F390N) to investigate the wavelength dependence of the opposition surge, or to dither the primary filter images to maximize spatial resolution. The precise choice of the primary wavelength filter is not critical; photometric accuracy is the primary concern. Each visit/orbit results in at least 1 image of each satellite at 1 orbital longitude, the worst case scenario. The critical dimension to acheiving the scientific objectives is phase angle and longitude coverage (temporal variation). 1) 4 orbits will be used to obtain ~ 90 degree orbital longitude sampling for all 4 satellites at alpha < 1.3 degrees during their minimum phase angle orbits in early July (fig. 3). Because Europa's opposition surge is only ~ 1 degree wide, it is critical to sample it during this alpha < 1.3 degree window. 2) 4 additional orbits are required to obtain ~90 degree orbital longitude coverage at alpha ~6 degrees of all 4 satellites in early August (fig. 2). 3) 4 additional orbits are required to obtain ~ 90 degrees orbital longitude coverage at alpha ~10 degrees of all 4 satellites in September - October (fig. 2). The 4 orbits in 1) sample the peak of the opposition surge. The 8 orbits in 2) and 3) at alpha ~6 degrees and alpha ~10 degrees, respectively, define the linear (mag/degrees) phase coefficient of each surface element that defines the baseline brightness that the opposition surge amplitude is measured relative to (fig. 1). ~90 degrees orbital longitude coverage is deemed the minimum acceptable for characterizing the opposition surge globally with ~200 km spatial resolution. This sets the 4 orbit requirement at each alpha as the minimum. This is a photometric experiment requiring optimum calibration of the measured flux. Of greatest importance is the accuracy to which fluxes can be compared between different orbits spanning 3 months in time. The absolute zero point value for the magnitude system is of secondary importance. The goal is to quantify the variation in the relative intensity of each surface as a function of phase angle. If the Cycle 5 calibration effort described in the WFPC2 Instrument Handbook, Version 3.0 dated June 1995, achieves its goal of 1 percent absolute photometric accuracy, that will certainly be sufficient for this project. Real Time Justification ----------------------- There are significant time-critical aspects to all of the requested orbits: 1) The 4 visits designated as 1) in the observation description section were acquired during the interval 7/1/96 UT to 7/11/96 UT. 2) This updated Phase II proposal seeks to schedule the remaining 8 orbits to acquire the medium and large phase angle and full longitude coverage needed to complete the data set. The requirement of ~uniform orbital longitude sampling for multiple satellites in a single set of 4 orbits puts strong constraints on the times of the specific orbits. Io rotates 12 degrees during 1 HST orbit and the other satellites rotate much more slowly, so a 90 degree orbital longitude (rotation) spacing on Io corresponds to about 8 HST orbital periods. This means there is a few orbit flexibility in the selection of observation times, but the relative spacing of the orbits to be used will be strongly constrained if the total number of orbits is to be minimized, as requested. For each visit, I have specified in the comments section a PREFERRED time to schedule the first exposure of the visit. The more closely these preferred times can be scheduled, the better the longitude and phase sampling will be in the data set. Extraordinary effort using MOSS was put into identifying the windows when ALL 4 satellites are visible without Jupiter's disk being within the PC FOV. IN NO CASE SHOULD ANY EXPOSURE BE SCHEDULED OUTSIDE THE TIMES SPECIFIED IN THE BETWEEN CONSTRAINT WITHOUT THE CONSENT OF THE P.I. 3) Finally, because sampling of similar longitudes at different phase angles is the goal, the ENTIRE SET OF OBSERVATIONS ARE INTER-DEPENDENT and re-scheduling orbits at times other than those specifically requested in the remaining 8 visit specifications (1 orbit/visit) will require careful rescheduling. Although the justification for this proposal includes that this project complements and supports the Galileo mission scientific investigations of the satellites, the 2 projects will not require coordinated data acquisition. The interaction is focussed on combining the results. Precisely because the proposed HST observations are complementary to and will not be acquired by the Galileo mission, the 2 projects need not coordinate data taking.
