Abstract The high sensitivity and resolution of the ROSAT PSPC in the soft X-ray region (~0.2 --2 keV) has allowed us to investigate the ionizing continuum in a complete sample of 23 low-redshift QSOs with an order of magnitude more detail than previously possible. This provides a unique opportunity to make real progress in understanding AGNs by investigating the response of the nuclear gas to the properties of the ionizing continuum. Thus we propose HST FOS observations of the strengths and profiles of strong and weak ultraviolet emission and absorption lines, and the ultraviolet continuum, combining these with existing and planned HST FOS and ground- based spectroscopy, to constrain the physical conditions and geometry of the inner few parsecs where the strong gravitational and radiation fields determine the accretion of fuel and ejection of exhaust from the central engine. The feasibility of this investigation is demonstrated by exciting new and highly-significant correlations among X-ray luminosity and spectral index, broad optical Fe II and narrow OIII emission, and the width of broad H Beta\ in our sample, and some similar relations seen for low-luminosity AGNs, as well as suggested trends of high ionization line strengths with UV- X-ray spectral index and luminosity in incomplete and biased samples. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6781( 11) - 05/15/96 13:48 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our sample comprises those 23 QSOs from the Palomar Bright QSO Survey (Schmidt & Green 1983) with z < 0.4\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ and N_H I < 1.9 * 10^20,cm^-2. This PG sample is an excellent one for our purposes, because, apart from the availability of our ROSAT observations, it has been investigated systematically at many wavelengths. We will obtain FOS high resolution spectrophotometry with G130, G190, G270, and G400H gratings, and the 1"\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ aperture, as needed to observe the spectra from below Ly- alpha\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ and to match the ground- based data above 3250 Angstrom. We will make use of archival data where they exist, even though observations were often made with the narrow slit and pre- costar. The table below shows the observations available and those needed to complete the sample. The resolution and sensitivity of HST and the FOS are needed, not only for broad line profiles, but also for measuring associated absorption, and Galactic absorption lines provide a check on wavelength scales. We have calculated exposure times in two ways: using a redshifted, Galactic- reddened template spectrum, and using flux-densities directly from IUE spectra that are available for nearly all the sample. We generally prefer the latter. We aim for S/N=18, 19, and 20 per diode resolution element in the continuum region near all strong emission lines for G130H, G190H, and G270 and G400H gratings respectively. Not that we have filled orbits using additional G400H, G570H or G780H exposures. This makes great scientific sense because it ensures greater simultaneity of as much of the spectrum as possible, compared with our planned ground-based extensions of the UV spectra to longer wavelengths. We have given preference, where possible, to regions that are difficult to observe from the ground because of strong atmospheric absorption features. We have used the sensitivity Tables in the 1995 FOS Handbook, corrected to the 1"\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ aperture. We use the blue digicon rather than the red for G190H if an important emission line falls between about 1650 and 1700 A. We have considered using GHRS below about 1500 Angstrom, where the sensitivity is greater than the FOS detectors, but in general it is more efficient to stay set up with the FOS, as this is needed for wavelength coverage at the longer wavelengths. The longest exposure object has been omitted to reduce the total orbit request. Need for HST, rather than IUE: This project can be done only with our QSO sample. The resolution and sensitivity of the FOS high resolution gratings are needed for emission line profiles and narrow absorption. The sensitivity, wavelength resolution and calibration accuracy of IUE are too low for the measurements we are proposing. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None of the supporting observations described below will impose constraints on HST scheduling. beginitemize item Ground-based spectrophotometry. Some ASCA observations are being proposed by collaborators, including observations of the `warm absorber' PG 1114+445. item ISO Observations The far-infrared continuum of 18 of the quasars in our sample will be observed by the photometer on ISO (8 points 5--200Mu) as part of a NASA Key Project (PI. Wilkes). Of the remining 5, 4 will be observed in a similar manner as part of the European Core Program. PG1352+183 is the only object in the sample not included in the ISO Guaranteed Time observations. Note though that the sky visibility of ISO depends on its launch date (currently scheduled for early November 1995) and a few of the sample may not be observed due to their inaccessible sky position. Knowledge of the far-IR continuum will allow us to place limits on the importance of IR-heating in generating the low-ionization emission lines. item Time Variability. A spectrophotometric line variability program is being carried out by Netzer and collaborators using Wise and Steward Observatories.
