Abstract We propose to obtain WFPC2 images of the globular cluster system of M87 in F555W and F814W at various galactocentric radii. We intend to observe the globular clusters in 5 fields that are 2.5,7.5,10 and 15 arcmins south of the galaxy, roughly along a N-S line and another field 1.7' N of the galaxy. Sub-arcsecond dithering will be employed to reduce the effect of undersampling of the psf. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ The WFPC2 with filters F555W (V) and F814W (I) will be used to obtain the images. All observations will be .25 arcsec dithered using POS TARG. A pair of 400 sec exposures and a pair of 500 sec exposures will be obtained with the first filter at each position. This set of exposures optimally uses one orbit. For the second set of exposures with the second filter at the same position, two pairs of 500 sec dithered observations can be made in 1 orbit due to the smaller overhead time needed to re-acquire guide stars. We will observe the clusters in both colors at 5 different fields south of the galaxy. Another set of observations in both filters will be made north of the galaxy.
