Abstract We propose to use the WFPC2 to make high-resolution observations of the surface and atmosphere of Mars just before (or during) the March 1997 opposition. These observations will employ PC exposures with full-aperture filters, the methane quad filter, and Linear Ramp Filters. This 9-filter sequence must be repeated 4 times in orbits that are scheduled at 6 hour intervals within single 24-hour period. This scheduling will insure that we sample sub-Earth longitudes separated by about 90 degrees, providing full-disk coverage with a minimum of foreshortening. One of the 4 orbits should be scheduled such that the longitude of the proposed Mars Pathfinder landing site (32.8 W - Ares Vallis) is located near the sub-Earth point on Mars. This pointing will allow us to support the Mars Pathfinder Mission by (1) providing additional information about the local climate and airborne dust abundance 4 months before the arrival of that spacecraft, and (2) providing regional context for the surface mineralogy sampled by Pathfinder instruments. In addition to those objectives, this program will provide spectrally-resolved global maps of airborne dust, ice, and ozone distributions, the surface ice distribution, and the surface iron mineralogy. This information will facilitate the development or more reliable models of the Martian atmospheric chemistry climate. It can also be combined with Mars Pathfinder and Mars Global Surveyor observations to yield additional information about the origin and evolution of the Martian surface. The scheduling of this GTO program has been coordinated with that of two Mars GO programs (P. James, P. and Smith) to insure the maximum science return. We had agreed on the following approach at the time that this program was submitted. This 4-orbit GTO program should be scheduled on or before the March 18, 1997 Mars opposition. P. James will schedule a 4-orbit opposition program just after Mars opposition, but at least 2 weeks after this GTO program. This scheduling will facilitate monitoring of changes in the Martian atmosphere and surface on a ~2-week time scale. Smith plans to schedule one orbit in conjunction with the present GTO program, and one orbit with James' GO program, using filters that complement those used by the other programs. For maximum return, Smith's observations should be scheduled one Mars rotation after this or James' program has observed the Pathfinder landing site. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ xxx Real Time Justification ----------------------- xxx Calibration Justification ------------------------- xxx Additional Comments ------------------- xxx ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Data Distribution Media: 8MM Blocking Factor: 10 Ship To: PI_Address Ship Via: UPS Email: , ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6852( 10) - 01/13/97 16:15 - [ 1] TARGET LIST b)Solar System Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TARGET NUMBER: 1 | TARGET NAME: MARS-ATM ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TARGET DESCRIPTION: PLANET MARS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TARGET POSITION LEVEL 1 | TARGET POSITION LEVEL 2 | STD=MARS | | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TARGET POSITION LEVEL 3 | WINDOWS | | WND1 = 25-FEB-97:00:00:00 TO 18-MAR- | 97:00:00:00 | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ DATA | COMMENTS | F(2250.0)=3.8491e-10 | OBSERVATIONS TAKEN AS CLOSE AS F(3360.0)=1.1394e-08 | POSSIBLE TO MARCH 15, 1997 F(4330.0)=2.4138e-09 | OPPOSITION.
