TERRILE JET PROPULSION LABORATORY N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Abstract High resolution imaging of Titan in the near infrared will be used to study features on the satellite's surface and to search for discrete cloud features in its atmosphere. The filters selected correspond to varying degrees of methane opacity, and therefore represent varying depths of penetration into the Titan atmosphere, with some reaching all the way to the surface. The primary objective is to measure the wavelength dependence of discrete surface features to investigate possible compositional heterogeneity of Titan's surface. A second objective is to search for low-level clouds and to measure their wind speed with respect to the surface. This will provide the first description of Titan's global atmospheric circulation. Pairs of observations, separated by one day, will be made at three equally spaced intervals during Titan's 16-day orbit around Saturn. A dither mode will be used to achieve "super resolution". ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7180( 8) - 08/20/98 14:52 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We want to obtain images of Titan at the highest resolution possible. For this reason we use camera 1 (except for the longest wavelengths where we reconfigure to camera 2) and a dither pattern that moves the image by (P + 0.5) pixels in each direction. With this oversampling technique we hope to improve the spatial resolution beyond the pixel resolution, especially for images at shorter wavelengths. We selected filters that probe Titan's atmosphere at various depths, with some penetrating all the way down to the surface. (a) At the short wavelength end of NICMOS we use camera 1 with three different narrow band filters: F097N in the center of a CH4 absorption band, F095N in a intermediate area, and F108N outside the CH4 absorption band. (b) Still using camera 1, we also take images with a medium band filter F165M in the slope of a deep absorption band of CH4. (c) After a change to camera 2, we take images of Titan through a window around 2.03 u (F204M) and in a very dark area of Titan's spectrum at the longest wavelength around 2.4u (F237M). This proposal consists of three pairs of visits obtained at three positions which, when combined, provide a full longitudinal coverage of Titan: (1) At a position between superior conjunction and eastern elongation. (2) At a position between eastern elongation and inferior conjunction. (3) At western elongation. For each of the positions (1) - (3) we record two identical sets of images, with the second set taken 1 day after the first is finished. Each of these three pairs will allow us to look for temporal changes due to cloud movements in Titan's atmosphere. At the time of opposition the spider diffraction spike from Saturn interferes with Titan when Titan is at western elongation. Therefore we require a roll for the western elongation of 23 - 25 degrees from nominal. ****** Additional orbit: We added an additional orbit to revisit the bright spot ****** at Eastern elongation and to obtain deeper exposures of this area of ****** Titan. These images will help to monitor long term variations near the ****** bright spot and will also be used to complement a small gap near the ****** bright spot. This time we use only camera 1 and filters F097N, F108N, ****** and F165M, where the latter two probe the surface. F097N will be used ****** to subtract the atmospheric contribution from images taken through F108N. Real Time Justification ----------------------- ****** TITAN-POS4 we want to observe when Titan is near opposition (October 23, ****** 1998). If there is a problem with scheduling, the window can be opened ****** up, but only at the cost of somewhat reduced contrast and having a ****** fraction of the disk not illuminated. This proposal involves two types of time constraints: (1) We want to observe Titan near opposition (October 10, 1997). (2) This proposal consists of 3 independent pairs of visits. The second visit of each pair has to be executed 24 hours after the first visit, i.e. 14, 15 or 16 orbits after the first orbit. This allows us to observe the time evolution in Titan's atmosphere over a reasonably long time scale at a still sufficiently large longitudinal overlap of the two images. Calibration Justification ------------------------- This program critically depends on the plate scales. The current version uses plate scales as measured in late May. If more updated values are available before the program goes into the final planning phase, we would like to update the DITH-SIZE values accordingly. We added darks to this proposal in order to ensure that darks are available for the filters used at the time of our observations. In camera 1 we position the target at coordinates (96, 96) where the gain is about a factor of 3 higher than at the center (128, 128) of the detector. At western elongation we require an off-nominal roll to move the spider diffraction spike from our object. Instead of a roll angle between 23 and 25 degrees a roll angle between -23 and -25 degrees can be used. Plate scales need to be adjusted if updated values are available before the program goes into the phase of detailed planning. Current values are based on measurements taken in May. One dither step has to move the object by more than the diameter of Titan. The following plate scales have been adopted (as of May 1997): Camera 1, x direction: 0.043328", P = 23; Camera 1, y direction: 0.043131", P = 23; The averaged plate scale for camera 1 is thus 0.0432295". In camera 1 we position the target at coordinates (96, 96) where the gain is about a factor of 3 higher than at the center (128, 128) of the detector. For the second four dither positions at each wavelength we use slightly different POS TARGS to move the whole dither pattern by (-3.6 pix, -7.3 pix).
