Abstract We propose to use six orbits to obtain WFPC2 images through several filters at two roll orientations for each of the three bright RS CVn stars (V<5.8) that are the candidates for use as the guide star of the NASA/Stanford Gravity Probe-B (GP-B) mission. GP-B is designed primarily to measure the "frame-dragging" effect predicted by general relativity, in this case the slow eastward rotation of locally inertial frames with respect to the "fixed stars" due to the diurnal rotation of the earth's mass. The uncertainty of the proper motion of the guide star in an extragalactic frame places one limit on the accuracy of the measurement of frame dragging. The standard error of the rate of motion during the mission should be less than 0.3 milliarcseconds per year. This level can be achieved for our RS CVn radio binaries by means of astrometric VLBI observations spanning about a decade. However, the presence of any third component orbiting the selected guide star with a period in the range of about 100 days to 100 years could cause the mean transverse motion of the image seen by GP-B to differ significantly from that measured by VLBI. Our proposed WFPC2 images will allow a search for plausible main-sequence companions not detectable by other means. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7209( 11) - 04/17/97 09:19 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ For each star, we request exposures at two roll orientations (ideally 20 degrees to 30 degrees apart) to allow us to detect stars at any position angle with respect to our targets and to use image-differencing to remove the PSF of the targets. For each pair of images with exposure times chosen to allow one of our bright targets to reach saturation, the 3 sigma detection level is Delta m ~ 9 mag, and for each pair with 1000-fold saturation, this level would be Delta m ~ 16.5 mag. However, in addition to the detection limits imposed by the SNR of our images, PSF subtraction artifacts due to focus variations will limit our 3 sigma detection level to Delta m <= 7.4 mag at 0.3" separation from each target, Delta m <= 10.2 mag at 1", and Delta m <= 12.0 mag at 3" (Table 7.2 of the WFPC2 handbook). Our observations will detect all companions whose light would significantly affect the GP-B star tracker at separations >~ 1", and a decreasing percentage of those companions at smaller separations. To obtain the maximum detection capability for barely resolved, main-sequence M stars (arguably the most likely spectral class for an undiscovered companion, and for which the magnitude difference from our targets would be at least 7), we propose first to use the F1042M filter. Since for each of our stars an F1042M exposure saturates in only ~1 s, in one full orbit there would be time for many additional exposures with either this and other filters. Use of the F953N filter can yield similar exposures in an adjacent band, and use of the F850LP and F814W filters can provide highly saturated images (up to 1000-fold) in less than 40 s, and hence allow detection of fainter companions at separations >~ 3", outside of the columns and regions affected by saturation or by significantly variable levels of diffracted or scattered light. In addition, use of the F336W, F255W. and F300W filters would provide better detection of white dwarfs, another class of plausible to-date-undetectable companions of our targets. In each full (say, 55 min) orbit there would also be time for saturated exposures with the F336W and F450 filters. Additional spectral information about any detected companions could be obtained using the F502N and F555W filters for a similar set of images in intermediate colors. For the last exposure of each visit, we can use the POS TARG option to shift the image 5.5 PC1 pixels in each coordinate to obtain some of the advantages of dither with a minimum added cost in overhead time.
