Abstract The surfaces of Kuiper Belt Objects [KBO's] contain a record of formative and dynamical processes in the outer solar system. Although KBO's could be a homogenous population containing primitive materials, they may instead have a diversity of surfaces caused by collisional interactions and compositional gradients within the solar nebula. Near-infrared low-resolution spectra will provide excellent diagnostics of likely surface frosts and possible organic material and will be used to characterize the surfaces of five KBO's at different heliocentric distances. These observations will also test for light-curve effects caused by rotation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7239( 32) - 03/16/98 14:55 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will obtain low-resolution spectra of KBO's by utilizing the grism in Camera 3. Sufficient signal/noise will be obtained by binning 20 spectral pixels. We concentrate on G141 and observe in its associated camera filter, F150W in order to map the spatial distribution of sources. Each object will be observed at two roll angles, separated by 29 degrees, in order to deconvolve possible spectra contamination by other objects in the field located along the dispersion direction of the array. For 1996TL66, 1994TB, and Pholus, we split an orbit for each object, with the two halves having different roll angles. The total integration time for each of these objects is kept under 32 minutes in order to accommodate the overhead due to the 2 guide star acquisitions [12 min, 14 sec] and the 29 degree roll [8 min, 17 sec]. We devote 2 complete orbits to 1993SC, with a relative roll of 28 degrees between them. Real Time Justification ----------------------- The two half-orbits should take place within the time of an orbit. Since the targets move, we want to make sure that the same field appears at both roll angles, otherwise we may not be able to deconvolve overlapping spectra. Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- Observations of TL66 and Pholus are placed on HOLD since the grism observations require the best possible focus of NIC3. Observations of 1995QY9 are on HOLD pending the latest ephemeris update. Note that the original 7239 proposal was using filters. The IR fluxes of these objects are not well characterized from the ground. Based on a newly published Keck spectrum of 1993SC (Brown et al.
