Abstract The JVAS/CLASS radio survey has been the most successful to date at finding arcsecond-scale gravitational lenses, almost doubling the known number (11 lenses found of which 10 are new discoveries). The most surprising result of the survey, which contradicts much accepted theory, has been that a significant number of lenses appear to be disk rather than elliptical systems. NICMOS observations of the JVAS/CLASS lenses will (i) give clear indications of the nature of the lensing galaxy where this is ambiguous, (ii) give much better constraints on the stellar light distribution in the reddened galaxies, and (iii) in one case, provide the only likely chance of detecting the lensed images of the background quasar. All but one of the lenses in this proposal have been discovered, and the redshifts and radio maps obtained, by the JVAS/CLASS collaboration based at Jodrell Bank which includes the authors. We propose to make a systematic NICMOS survey of these objects. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7255( 2) - 03/20/97 10:40 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The observations are aimed at detecting and imaging relatively faint (V$\\sim$23) galaxies in the presence of point sources (V$\\sim$ 16 to 22). We require high dynamic range, resolution of about 0.2 arcsec and a wavelength far enough into the infrared to significantly reduce the dust extinction compared to what we observe at 814nm in our previous WFPC2 observations. Tradeoffs between these considerations dictate a wavelength of about 1.6$\\mu$m; shorter wavelengths improve resolution but worsen the dust constraint, and longer wavelengths impose unacceptable penalties in thermal background and resolution. We therefore propose to use the F160W filter with camera 1 in order to fully sample the PSF. Our measurements with the WFPC2 on the lens galaxy of 1933+503 reveal a flux of 7.5$\\times10^{-16}$erg\\,cm$^{-2}$\\,s$^{-1}$\\AA$^{- 1}$\\,sq.arcsec$^{-1}$. This is equivalent to 13\\,mJy per square arcsec. In order to reach this sensitivity we would only require a few hundred seconds for detection; however we are interested in detections of point lensed images considerably fainter than this. Our limit in the WFPC2 exposure for the point sources is about 0.1\\,mJy. We wish to go at least a factor of 20 deeper than this, i.e. deeper than 0.005\\,mJy, and therefore require an integration time of about two hours. This requires four orbits. Similar arguments to those used for 1933+503 above apply to 0218+357 except in this case we are trying to detect faint structure in the lensing galaxy itself such as evidence for spiral arms. Thus we also request 4 $ For the remaining systems the lens magnitudes are $V \\sim22- 23$. We are trying to detect features within the individual lensing galaxies and thus estimate that we require a S:N of 50. The surface brightnesses are typically 0.5mJy/sq.arcsec and thus an integration time of 2000-2500 sec is necessary. We request two orbits for each of these targets, giving a total of 18 orbits for the full proposal.
