Abstract The z>4.5 quasars are our only large sample of objects at these high redshifts. Ground-based and WFPC2 studies have shown that they mark rich regions in which neighboring galaxies, gas and dust can be detected around the quasars, together with more separated galaxies. The latter objects appear to be very primitive and may represent early stages in the galaxy formation process. Fainter companions and surrounding galaxies may be found with combined deep IR and optical imaging from HST. Here we propose deep imaging observations with NICMOS of four z >~ 4.5 quasar fields. These have been the subject of an intensive program of ground-based LyAlpha, O II, and multi-color imaging and spectroscopic investigations. The observations are designed to produce a homogeneous data base around the highest redshift quasars which will be usable for a wide variety of studies. Because of this we will make the data available for archival research after only a 3-month proprietary period. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7266( 25) - 12/20/99 17:23 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The primary observations will be obtained with NIC1 at F110 and with NIC2 for F160 in the multiaccum mode with evenly spaced linear samples, which will allow full cosmic ray rejection and read noise reduction. However, if on-chip amplifier glow is a significant problem, we will move to long exposure accum mode observations, though this may reduce the utitilty of the observations for quasar host studies. Each exposure will be optimized to maximally fit within an orbit. We assume a 2200 s exposure in the first orbit and 2380 s exposures in subsequent orbits after overheads for the purposes of calculating the number of orbits. The goal is to obtain a 5Sigma sensitivity for compact sources of H=25 (0.1 MuJy) in the F160W filter and J=26 (0.08 MuJy) in the F110W band. This requires a 7500 s total exposure time for F160W (or essentially three orbits) and a 6000 s total exposure (essentially three orbits) for F110W. Thus, each target will require 6 orbits to obtain the broad-band high resolution data. The parallel observations of the surrounding field with the remaining cameras will be carried out with the same filters as the primary camera, and should reach 5Sigma sensitivities of J=26.4 and H=25.4 for compact sources (NIC3) if they are to be usable. We have assumed that this will not be the case, and we will obtain separate F160W NIC3 exposures to provide wide-field coverage. We estimate that a 1000 s exposure will reach a sensitivity of H=24 (5Sigma). One such exposure will be taken on each of the BR2237-06 LA1 and LA2 high-z galaxies. In addition centered F160W NIC3 exposures amounting to 2 orbits on each quasar will be taken. Finally, the WFPC2 observations require 4200 s to reach a 5Sigma source limit of I=26.5 and 4900 s to reach a 5Sigma B of 27.5, for a total of 4 orbits per object with allowance for overheads and CR splitting. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None. Extensive multi-color (optical through IR) and narrow-band optical (Ly- alpha) and IR (O II) imaging is being carried out on Mauna Kea (UH 2.2m, CFHT, Keck) and at ESO. Deep Ly- alpha exposures from the 2.2m are already available for 3 of the fields. BR1033--0327 is the subject of an ESO key observing program. Spectroscopic follow-ups will use LRIS on Keck. Accessible scheduling dates (late November 1998) push against cryogen lifetime limit for NICMOS. Please get back in touch with the P.I. if it is feasible to improve chances of scheduling by respecifying primary observation with NIC3, perhaps requiring slightly offset target position. Possible factors include: improved guide star accessibility for earlier acquisition (flexibility in positioning target in wider field detector), S/N on faint galaxies and exposure depth more resistant to SAA problem due to larger detector pixel size, shorter exposure times on individual multiaccum sequences (would be 3 to fill an orbit vs. current 2) may be more easily scheduled. These would trade off against lower resolution of NIC3 and lower image quality dependent on current focus. [Such a decision would need iteration with P.I., since it requires information not available through rps2]. However, my estimate gives this an ORIENT 149, and a range (ORIENT 141D to 157D) which is incompatible with the LOW SKY scheduling. LOW SKY on the primary target field is more important, but it is worth checking to see whether this could be done. Dither pattern moves target center towards WF3. This is a repeat for failed visit 4.
