Abstract We propose to obtain infrared imaging polarimetry, broad and narrow band imaging of the nuclear regions of Centaurus A. This project complements and extends the studies we performed with HST in the optical bands and in the IR with ground based data. In optical images the dust lane dominates both the morphology and the polarization properties and it appears that the active nucleus is completely hidden from our view. The reduced extinction and efficiency of the dichroic polarization of the dust in the infrared allows us a much clearer view of the innermost regions of Cen A, with our ground based IR polarimetry showing the existence of a highly polarized nucleus. However, the nature of the nucleus remains unclear. The HST polarization observations will determine whether the IR polarization is associated with an extended scattering region, for which we would expect to see a resolved centro- symmetic polarization pattern or with a mis-directed BL Lac nucleus(jet?). We will also explore the geometry and structure of the emission line region, in particular its relationship with the jet. A search for synchrotron emission off-nucleus associated with the X-ray/radio jet will be performed. A secondary goal of the observations will be to provide significantly better data about the globular cluster population of NGC 5128. The proposed parallel WF/PC-2 observations will allow us to measure the sizes, colors, and shapes of ~ 400 globular clusters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7267( 14) - 11/07/97 14:08 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The observations required for this project are: imaging polarimetry, broad and narrow band images of the nuclear and of the jet region. Primary observations Imaging polarimetry will be obtained with the long wavelength palarimeter with the NICMOS camera 2. At this wavelength the relative contribution of the nuclear polarization with respect to the dichroic polarization is the highest . At a distance of 10 " from the nucleus, which corresponds to the field of view of CAM2, the surface brightness in the K band is ~ 10^-3 Jy arcsec^-2. The ground based polarization level measured in the K band is 5.6 a polarization determination accurate to within 1 Broad and narrow band images will be obtained with camera 3 in two locations: on the nucleus and along the X- ray/radio jet at a distance of 1' to include knot A and knot B. Meadows and Allen (1992) measured an equivalent width of the Br Gamma line in the nucleus of Cen A of ~ 6 Angstrom in a 1arcs4 * 2arcs0 aperture. Given a ratio PaAlpha/ Br Gamma ~ 12, we estimate an equivalent width for the PaAlpha of at least ~ 70 Angstrom. An exposure time of 1200 s will produce a SNR of 10 at ~ 10^-3 Jy arcsec^-2 in the narrow band filters. Given a filter width of ~ 190 Angstrom, we expect in the emission line image a SNR larger than 3 and up to 50 in the central regions. One orbit per location will enable us to study in detail the emission line morphology. In order to model accurately the dust extinction three broad band images are required. They will be obtained with camera 3 with the filters F110W, F160W and F220M which, with an exposure time of 800 seconds (one orbit per location), will produce a signal to noise ratio of 50 or greater over the whole field of view. An additional orbit is required for the background subtraction. Parallel WFPC2 observations The parallel observations will be centered in six different random fields for an exposure time ranging between 1 and 3 orbits. Given the measured number density of globular clusters we expect more than 400 sources in these images. The luminosity function of the globular clusters already found with WF/PC-I peaks at V = 20.7, with a dispersion of 1.4 mag. We thus expect 98 per cent of the globular clusters to be brighter than V = 23.5 (2Sigma below the brightness peak). An exposure time of 1300 s (half an orbit) in the F555W and F814W filters will provide a signal- to-noise ratio of ~ 8 at V = 23.5 , which is adequate to measure the globular cluster sizes, distinguish them from foreground stars, and enable accurate color-magnitude diagrams. Parallel STIS observations We propose to acquire parallel observations with the CCD STIS camera (using the long-pass filter) to determine the amplitude and characteristics of the surface brightness fluctuations (SBF) at different locations across the galaxy. Because of the high sensitivity and excellent spatial resolution of the instrument, it will be possible to identify and excise foreground stars, background galaxies and globular clusters down to very faint flux levels thus eliminating the most important source of contamination and uncertainty in the measurement of the SBF.
