Abstract In the current AGN paradigm, distributions of ionized gas in so-called `ionization cones' are believed to be produced by shadowing of the central source of ionizing radiation by a molecular torus. If this is indeed the case, there should be an excellent correspondence between the locations of the inner edge of the torus and the edge of the inner apex of the cone. HST now offers the capability to test this prediction directly in the nearest Seyfert galaxy with both a large angular size `ionization cone' and a circumnuclear molecular disk. We propose to image the Circinus galaxy (a Seyfert 2 galaxy at 4 Mpc distance) in [OIII] 5007 and HAlpha+[NII] 6548, 6583 on the PC (to map out the ionized gas) and in a molecular hydrogen line at 2.12 Mum (to map out the warm H_2). We expect to resolve both the apex of the cone and the `hole' in the middle of the torus, thus allowing a test of the above scenario. Other benefits include maps of the excitation of the ionized gas (which allows a check on the shadowing scenario) and of the green -- red -- near infrared continuum colors at unprecedented (sub-pc or ~ pc) spatial resolution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7273( 18) - 01/22/99 13:29 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to observe the Circinus galaxy with WFPC2 in filters containing the [OIII] 5007 and HAlpha lines, and with NICMOS Camera 2 in the H_2 2.12 Mum line, as well as in nearby continuum filters. We emphasize that the very low recession velocity (439 km s^-1 - Freeman et al. 1977) of Circinus allows us to use the WFPC2 zero redshift emission line filters (F502N and F656N) and therefore image on the PC, unlike higher redshift objects, which require the Linear Ramp Filters and WF chips, with consequent loss of spatial resolution. As with our previous observations of extended line emission in Seyfert galaxies (e.g. GO--5411), we estimate signal-to-noise ratios and exposure times by assuming that the line emission has a uniform surface brightness. Although there is a tendency for the line emission to peak towards the nucleus, making the off-nuclear emission fainter than the mean, the line emission actually exists in clumps and knots, improving the signal-to-noise ratio. Our extensive experience with these observations has shown that high quality images are readily obtained by using this method. We estimate surface brightnesses for [OIII] and HAlpha (plus the part of the NII lines within the filter) using the spectra of Oliva et al. (1994), obtained through a 1arcs5 * 4arcs5 slit. The H_2 surface brightness was derived from our own long slit data (Fig. 3 and Storchi-Bergmann et al. 1996). We wish to obtain 5- 10sigma pixel^-1 (on average) detections in the continuum-subtracted ionO3 and HAlpha images, and 4 - 5sigma pixel^-1 (on average) for the H_2 image. The S/N per PSF for the H_2 image will be 2 to 3 times higher than this value. The following table shows the predicted count rates in our narrow-band images, both from the line only, and from the total ``background'', i.e. sky, telescope, dark current, and galaxy continuum, all of which are sources of noise and will be subtracted from the final image. In all cases, the galaxy continuum dominates the overall background rate. Line Instrument Line s.b. For our continuum images, we need to obtain the same signal-to-noise ratio as we achieved in the continuum in the line-plus-continuum images. Since we can use wider filters for the continuum images, the exposure times needed are much shorter. The exposure times needed are trivially small (a few seconds) for the F547M and F814W images ([OIII] and HAlpha continuum), so we choose to spend ~50 s per image, which will take us to surface brightness limits suitable for making a red - green color map. For the NICMOS F204M image (H_2 continuum), we formally require 67 s, a very small part of the total exposure, and shall increase this to about DEF. Orbit Request - Optical Observations For our WFPC2 narrow-band images, we shall CR-SPLIT the observations to allow removal of cosmic rays. The overhead is thus: Initial guide star acquisition -- 9 mins; 2 CR-SPLIT -- 2 * 5 mins; 2 NO CR-SPLIT 2 * 3 mins. Together with the 34 and 35 mins exposure times (line images) plus the 2 * 50 s exposure times (continuum images), we have a grand total of 96 mins i.e. 1 CVZ orbit. Note that due to the extent and one- sidedness of the line emission, we will point not at the galaxy nucleus but close to the centre of the ionized gas distribution. Orbit Request - Infrared Observations Because of the change of instruments, we need 9 mins for initial acquisition of guide stars (nothing for later contiguous orbits). NICMOS overheads are: setup at beginning of the first orbit -- 12 secs; 1 filter change -- 12 secs; 2 MULTIACCUMS -- 24 secs (which allows cosmic ray removal). The total overhead plus integration time on the galaxy itself (see below for background measurements) is thus 190 mins, i.e. 2 CVZ orbits. Our F212N image is in the wavelength region where subtraction of the thermal background from the telescope is important. We have spoken at length with the NICMOS instrument scientists to determine the most efficient way of achieving this, and there are various possible strategies depending on the stability of the background. We give two possibilies here, but emphasise that the best technique will have to be determined after in-orbit performance of NICMOS is known. If the background is stable, background images will be constructed as part of the calibration process. We can use these in our reduction, and hence will require no additional time. If the background does not have much temperature structure, we can use an image in a nearby filter (F215N) to track the variations in the background. We will alternate between observations in the F212N and F215N filters, integrating for the same time in the two filters. The telescope backgrounds in the two filters will be the same to within a multiplicative factor which will be determined in the SMOV phase. We can then scale the F215N image by the ratio of the thermal background count rates in the two filters and subtract the F215N image from the F212N image. This leaves in the F212N image the H_2 emission and a small, but known fraction (determined by the factor applied and the spectral shape of Circinus between these two filters, both of which are known) of the galaxy continuum. The galaxy continuum can then be subtracted in the normal way using our F204M continuum image. In this scenario, we will need an additional 2 orbits to obtain the F215N image and perform the filter changes thus giving a total of 4 orbits for the infrared observations. Adding the optical and infrared orbital requirements, we request a grand total of 5 CVZ orbits. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Circinus is in the `heart' of the CVZ. During the period when Cycle 7 observations will be performed, there are about 200 orbits of CVZ opportunities at the position of Circinus. We therefore request CVZ time to dramatically increase the efficiency of our observations. We are obtaining a ROSAT HRI image of Circinus (scheduled for September 13 1996) which will probe hot gas in both the cone and galaxy disk. The resolution of the HRI (5" ~ 100 pc) is sufficient to easily resolve substructure in the ionization cone, the total length of which is 20 " and will allow us to look for correspondences between X-ray emission and the filamentary emission-line structures. This would be expected if, as appears likely, there is an outflowing wind in Circinus which sweeps up the interstellar medium; soft X-rays are produced by thermal emission from the shocked gas (e.g. Suchkov et al. 1994). We also have a series of CTIO 4m long- slit near-infrared spectra with arc second resolution, which show H_2 emission in the v=1--0 S(1) line along the full length of the 15" slit. The H_2 emitting gas appears to be rotating in the plane of the galaxy disk (Storchi-Bergmann et al. 1996). In addition, if we are awarded HST time, we shall apply for observing time with the ATCA to obtain radio maps with arcsecond resolution (the best resolution of published radio maps is 11"; Elmouttie et al. 1995). These will allow us to look for regions of radio jet--ISM interaction.
