Abstract The study of low luminosity radio galaxies (LLRG) has been recently stimulated by several new results. The discovery of extended accretion disks and supermassive black holes, all found to be associated with LLRG, might provide a direct approach to measure key parameters such as the accretion rate and the black hole mass in AGNs. All but one of the known optical jets are found in LLRG and this has certainly important bearings on the acceleration and energy transport processes in the radio sources. LLRG play a fundamental role also in the unification schemes of radio loud AGNs as they are identified as the parent population of BL Lac objects. We therefore propose to perform a snapshot survey of the B2 sample which consists of 103 LLRG. It provides an excellent representation of the radio source types encountered below and around the break in the radio luminosity function. This survey will produce a homogenoeus set of images of LLRG which is complementary to those previously obtained with HST for the high luminosity 3CR radio sources, thus allowing a straighfroward comparison. This program is aimed to answer the following key questions: How common are extended nuclear disks? What is their orientation and morphology? How common are optical jets? What is the relationship between properties of the nuclear regions and of the host galaxies of FR I, FR II and BL Lacs? Do the FR I host galaxies present morphological peculiarities, such as tidal distorsions or nuclear cusps? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7281( 4) - 02/27/97 08:39 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ There are 103 objects in the B2 sample. These sources will be imaged with the Planetary Camera of the WFPC2 in two filters (F555W and F702W) with an exposure time of 5 minutes. All the B2 radio sources have been identified optically with galaxies brighter than V = 16.5 mag. With an exposure time of 5 minutes with the F555W and F814W filters we will go to a level of ~ 21.5 mag/sq arcsec at two sigma per pixel, appropriate for accurate isophotal measurements. This surface brightness corresponds to a radius of ~ 8 " \\ for a galaxy of total magnitude V=15, the median of the sample, and ~ 4 " \\ for the faintest source, V = 16.5. These observations ensure a detailed modeling of the nuclear regions for all the sources in both bands. In particular isophote fitting will provide the standard photometric parameters, such as surface brightness profile and ellipticity, and permit a straightforward identification of morphological peculiarities such as jets and tidal disturbancies. The five sigma detection limit for point sources against the stellar background expected in the central regions (~ 18 mag/sq arcsec) is ~ 24.5 which is perfectly adequate to reveal the presence of weak nuclear point sources. Snapshot observations are optimally suited for this project since only 22 minutes are required for each target, including guide star acquisition and overheads. Two images are necessary in order to estimate the broad band energy distribution of the nuclear point sources, of optical jets candidate and for direct estimates of reddening produced by absorption features, such as nuclear dusty disks. The selected filters provide the necessary broad wavelength coverage assuring, at the same time, a very high efficiency. Thirteen B2 sources have been already observed with HST as part of the 3C snapshot survey with the F702W filter and observations in a second band are scheduled. The final number of requested targets is 89. Given the high spatial resolution necessary for this project Fine Lock Guiding is required. We waive the proprietary period for these data.
