Abstract Wolf Rayet (WR) stars are the last stable evolutionary phase of the most massive O stars. This short-lived phase, in which the products of CNO burning (WN type) or He burning (WC type) are seen as a result of the removal of H-rich outer layers by intense stellar wind, and strong internal mixing via convection and overshoot. The resulting strong, broad emission lines, combined with an optically thick inner wind, make it difficult to determine these stars' intrinsic characteristics, particularly luminosity, mass, and age. 72\ have revealed themselves via HST, to be close binary and/or cluster members. The newly imaged clusters allow us to accurately determine the distances, luminosities, and ages of the WR members. The very close binaries put strong constraints on binary formation and evolution scenarios. We propose to triple the size of our Cycle 6 SNAP Galactic WR sample (from 25 to 75), and image 30 WR stars in the SMC and the LMC (for the first time) to search for companions and clusters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7282( 22) - 08/24/98 11:44 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Increasing evidence points to WR stars often forming as members of compact clusters or groups. With a 72\\ clusters/groups in 1996 with HST, we propose to continue our search to determine if many, or most, WR stars have previously unknown companions and/or located in compact groups. To accomplish this, we propose to obtain broad-band observations in each of the U (F336W), B (F439W), and V(F555W) filters with the WFPC2 for most targets. Where necessary for very bright targets, we will use the narrow band filters, F375N, F437N, and F502N. Their wavelength ranges most closely match the central wavelengths of the wide band filters. The exposure times will be tailored via the WFPC2 Exposure Time Calculator to produce approximately 45, 000 counts for the WR star in the brightest pixel. Using an O5 model input spectrum, this is typically achieved in 5- 90 seconds with the Planetary Camera. This exposure time will enable us to achieve maximum depth possible without compromising either the angular resolution or the reliability of the photometry. We easily accomplish all three exposures plus overheads within the 20-30 minutes allowed per orbit for a snapshot sequence. From such exposures, we will be able to create a color-color and color-magnitude diagram. In the case of a cluster, these diagrams will allow us to determine accurate reddening values, thus giving intrinsic colors, distances, and luminosities. Once these have been determined, it is relatively straight forward to derive approximate masses of the most luminous (non-WR) stars, and cluster age. This provides the age of the WR star, too, as well as an estimate of its (initial) mass. Based on our 1996 WFPC2 SNAP data, in Fig labelthreebarrel we illustrate our resolution as a function of separation. Binary WRs, of roughly equal magnitude, separate cleanly into two stars at distances of less than .1''. Furthermore, the 9 magnitude HST dynamic range allows us to search for faint clusters and companions impossible to find from the ground. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None. None.
