Abstract We propose to investigate the outer rotation curves of eight spiral galaxies at very large galactocentric radii by using the kinematical information from Ly-alpha absorption lines in the spectra of background quasars. This will enable us to measure the disk rotation up to ~ 7 times greater radius than what is possible in HI at 21cm. By constraining the rotation at these large radii one may hope to observe the expected turn down from flat rotation, determining for the first time the size of the dark matter halo and hence measure the total mass and mass-to-light ratio of disk galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7295( 6) - 09/20/99 13:25 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We want to target 8 QSOs with STIS with the G140M grating to detect an absorption feature in a range from about 1218 A to 1239 A, with a velocity precision of about 1/3 of the resolution (around 10 km/s). The small aperture width of 0.1" will be preferred to limit the Geocoronal Lyalpha pollution and preserve maximum spectral resolution. Our QSOs have all been observed with $IUE$, and their measured fluxes at 1220 A range from F_{1220} = 5 x 10^{-15} to 4 x 10^{-14} ergs/s/cm2/A. This gives peak local count rates of 1.8 x 10^{- 3} to 6.4 x 10^{-3} counts/s/pixel. These are all several orders of magnitude away from the MAMA Bright Objects limits. We only need a S/N of about 3, with the G140M. The requested exposure times are therefore between 3 minutes and up to 23 minutes. In addition we plan short G140L observations for the 4 QSOs at higher redshifts: in these cases it is possible that an absorption feature detected at 1218 A (up to 1239 A) is in fact a Lybeta line associated with a Lyalpha line at higher redshift. The G140L will therefore provide us with a spectrum over a larger wavelength range. The target acquisitions will require about 8 minutes, however we need acquisition peakups with the narrow slit, for which we need another 5 minutes (using the normal F28X50LP filter). Counting with the all the overheads, we need a single orbit per target, even for the faint ones for which we also need a G140L spectrum.
