Abstract The ``Red Rectangle'' is one of the nearest and best known of the proto-planetary nebulae. The central star (HD 44179) has recently left the AGB (within the past several hundred years) by ejecting a dense, dusty disk and surrounding optical and molecular envelope, and is now passing through spectral type A on its rapid evolution to higher temperatures. Moreover, the central star is a spectroscopic binary with a period of 319 days. We propose to exploit the high spatial resolution and coronographic capabilities of the WFPC2 and STIS instruments to investigate the molecule and dust formation processes in the Red Rectangle nebula and the influence of the changing nebular conditions on these processes from the inner dust disk to the outer regions. Our objective is to limit the potential identifications of the carriers of the many unique, and still unidentified, emission features in the optical spectrum of the nebula, through detailed morphological and spectroscopic studies of their spatial and spectral characteristics. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7297( 4) - 01/11/99 11:54 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ With the PC a series of short and longer images of the Red Rectangle with the filters F662W, F502N, F588N and F631N. Very deep images with the WFC with filters F588N and F621N. For the STIS observations we will use the G750M grating centered at 5734 A. Again two series of spectra: one exposed for the central star, and one for the faint surrounding nebula. For the latter series, the bright central region will be placed behind a coronographic bar. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Specific spacecraft roll angles are required to place the STIS slit in the desired position. For the definition of the roll angle we used earlier WFPC2 snapshot observations taken by one of the CoI's (H. E. Bond). For the WFPC2 images, the roll angle is defined so as to avoid CCD blooming in the nebula directions. Also it won't let us divide it into two 600-sec exposures; it insists on breaking it into 500+700 sec. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10 HD44179 WFPC2 IMAGE WF3-FIX F631N ATD-GAIN=7 1 1000 S POS TARG 30., 0. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7297( 4) - 01/11/99 11:54 - [ 5] Visit: 02 Visit Priority: Visit Requirements: ORIENT 87D TO 87D SCHED 40% On Hold Comments: Additional Comments: Exposures ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Exposure| Target |Instr | Oper. | Aper |Spectral|Central| Optional |Num| Time | Special Number | Name |Config| Mode |or FOV |Element |Waveln.| Parameters |Exp| | Requirements ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 HD44179 STIS/C ACQ F28X50L MIRROR ACQTYPE=POINT 1 0.1 S ONBOARD ACQ FOR 3, 4, 5 CD P ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3 HD44179 STIS/C ACCUM 52X0.2 G750M 5734 CR-SPLIT=2,GAIN=1 1 80 S CD ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4 HD44179 STIS/C ACQ/PEA 52X0.2F MIRROR 1 0.1 S ONBOARD ACQ FOR 5 CD K 1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5 HD44179 STIS/C ACCUM 52X0.2F G750M 5734 CR-SPLIT=2,GAIN=1 1 20 M CD 1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7297( 4) - 01/11/99 11:54 - [ 6] Summary Form for Proposal 7297 Item Used in this proposal ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Apertures PC1 WF3-FIX F28X50LP 52X0.2 52X0.2F1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Configurations WFPC2 STIS/CCD ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Opmodes IMAGE ACQ ACCUM ACQ/PEAK ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Optional Parameters CR-SPLIT=NO ATD-GAIN=15 ATD-GAIN=7 ACQTYPE=POINT GAIN=1 CR-SPLIT=2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Proposal Category GO ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Special Requirements ORIENT 40D TO 75D POS TARG 0., 0.
