Abstract It is proposed to carry out high-resolution UV spectroscopic observations of interstellar lines in the spectra of OB stars in the Carina Nebula, which will provide unique data on the ISM associated with star cluster formation. Data obtained in the visible at CTIO, and in the UV taken with IUE, demonstrate a rich spectrum of IS lines over a surprisingly wide range of velocities from -350 to +200 km/sec. These velocities are more typical of SNR gas, but in Carina it is possible they are sustained by stellar winds. The data obtained will be used to determine the physical conditions of the gas, establishing values for abundances, gas pressure, temperature, velocity, and depletion. Beyond the study of this remarkable region, the characterization of the ISM in these conditions will be useful in interpreting the spectra of starburst galaxies, galactic halos, and the spectra of distant quasars. The UV spectra obtained with IUE contain a large number of ionized species, but are not at sufficient resolution or S/N to unravel velocity splitting or line blends with stellar components for detailed abundance and depletion studies. This proposal takes advantage of STIS's capabilities to obtain high spectral resolution in the UV, and to include all the atomic species of interest in relatively few exposures. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7301( 3) - 01/14/99 11:28 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The four target stars have been selected as showing the most extreme interstellar-line profiles in the prior ground-based and IUE studies. We will obtain FUV MAMA observations using the grating E140H at its three prime settings 1234, 1416, and 1598 Angstroms. Setting 1234 covers N V, S II, Si II, Si II*, O I, O I*, O I**, C I. Setting 1416 covers C I, C II, C II*, Si IV, Ni II. Setting 1598 covers Si II, C IV, C I, C I*, Fe II, Al II. For the longer wavelengths we propose to use the NUV MAMA with the E230H grating at the three prime settings of 1763, 2513, and 2762 Angstroms. Setting 1763 covers C I, Al II, Ni II, Si II, Al III, Mg II. Setting 2513 will cover Mn II and Fe II. Setting 2762 covers Mg II and Mg I. Note that we have omitted the region from approximately 1900 to 2300 Angstroms, which is depressed by the interstellar 2200 Angstrom feature. We shall use the 0.2X0.09 slit with E140H and the 0.1X0.09 with E230H. The exposure times have been calculated using the STIS ETC, entering the magnitudes and reddening, and requiring a S/N of 50. At 1400 Angstroms, for example, the brightest star requires 839 sec (14 min) and the faintest star 3331 sec (55.5 min). Similarly at 2800 Angstroms for a S/N of 50 the exposure times are 663 sec (11 min) and 2150 sec (36 min), respectively. These numbers have been used to calculate the number of CVZ orbits assuming: FUV MAMA 9 min guide star acquire, 10 min target acquire, 20 min echelle peak- up, 1st science exposure (14 min or 55.5 min), 8 min instrument overhead, 2nd science exposure, 8 min overhead, 3rd science exposure, 8 min overhead. It has then been assumed we would move to the new instrument setting on the same star and continue: NUV MAMA 20 min echelle peak-up, 1st science exposure (11 min or 36 min), 8 min instrument overhead, 2nd science exposure, 8 min overhead, 3rd science exposure, 8 min overhead. These numbers have been summed and divided by 96 min to arrive at an estimate for the number of CVZ orbits. In cases where we have partial orbits we have rounded the orbit time up, giving the most conservative estimate. For example: HD93205/FUV 105 min/NUV 77 min/Total 182 min or 2 orbits. CPD-59D2603/FUV 230 min/NUV 152 min/Total 382 min or 4 orbits. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- The Carina Nebula is optimally located for CVZ scheduling, and we request such for substantial efficiency gains. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Data Distribution Paper Products: Media: 8MM Blocking Factor: 10 Ship To: PI_Address Ship Via: Email: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7301( 3) - 01/14/99 11:28 - [ 3] TARGET LIST a) Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 HD93205 STAR, Main Sequence O, RA=10H 44M 33.82S +/- 0.04S, J2000 TYPE=O3V ISM, HII Region, DEC=-59D 44' 15.28" +/- 0.3", V = 7.75 Absorption Line System PLATE-ID=06A6 B-V = 0.05 - Galactic E(B-V) = 0.37 F(1300)=4.7e-11 F(2800)=1.1e-11 2 HD93222 STAR, Giant O, ISM, HII RA=10H 44M 36.33S +/- 0.04S, J2000 TYPE=O7III Region, Absorption Line DEC=-60D 05' 28.8" +/- 0.3", V = 8.11 System - Galactic PLATE-ID=06A6 B-V = 0.05 E(B-V) = 0.37 F(1300)=3.4e-11 F(2800)=8.6e-12 3 CPD-59D2603 STAR, Main Sequence O, RA=10H 44M 47.42S +/- 0.04S, J2000 TYPE=O7V ISM, HII Region, DEC=-59D 43' 53.6" +/- 0.3", V = 8.77 Absorption Line System PLATE-ID=06A6 B-V = 0.14 - Galactic E(B-V) = 0.46 F(1300)=1.15e-11 F(2800)=3.0e-12 4 HDE303308 STAR, Main Sequence O, RA=10H 45M 05.96S +/- 0.04S, J2000 TYPE=O3V ISM, HII Region, DEC=-59D 40' 06.4" +/- 0.3", V = 8.17 Absorption Line System PLATE-ID=06A6 B-V = 0.13 - Galactic E(B-V) = 0.45 F(1300)=2.0e-11 F(2800)=6.5e-12 7301( 3) - 01/14/99 11:28 - [ 4] Visit: 01 Visit Priority: Visit Requirements: CVZ On Hold Comments: Additional Comments: Exposures ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Exposure| Target |Instr | Oper. | Aper |Spectral|Central| Optional |Num| Time | Special Number | Name |Config| Mode |or FOV |Element |Waveln.| Parameters |Exp| | Requirements ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 HD93205 STIS/C ACQ F28X50O MIRROR 1 1 S ONBOARD ACQ FOR 2-9 CD II Comments: Brightest pix 21, 000 e;
