Abstract Eta Carinae is uniquely significant for several astrophysical topics. The FOS and GHRS have produced excellent spectroscopic results on this object, solving some questions while opening some new ones. However, for instrumental reasons their spectral coverage of Eta Car has been inadequate. The STIS can eliminate this deficiency while also providing other advantages over the previous instruments. With the STIS we can estimate the different circumstellar extinctions of the central star and of ejecta within 0.3", while also obtaining diagnostic information from emission line profiles, line ratios, and continuum fluxes -- tasks that weren't feasible for this object with the FOS and HRS. These data will for the first time allow realistic modeling of the non-spherical wind and of densities and temperatures in the strange slow-moving equatorial condensations. Peculiar fluorescent excitation processes, which have produced some mysteries in the ejecta of Eta Car, can also be studied. Moreover, the same data will give improved information about the large-scale bipolar ejection nebula. The questions and characteristics of Eta Car need and deserve wide spectral coverage, good spectral resolution, and high spatial resolution all together; very few other astronomical objects rival it in this respect. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7302( 21) - 12/04/97 17:58 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Essentially, we propose to use the `M' gratings of the STIS CCD detector to cover the wavelength range 1700--10900 Angstrom, with Eta Car and adjoining gas as simultaneous targets. One suitable slit orientation is shown in figs.\\ 1 & 2; any orientation in a 30degrees or 40degrees range includes adequate portions of the diffuse-but-spotty ``BCD'' ejecta. The 0.1" slit width is good for our purposes; as fig.\\ 2 indicates, we can get excellent spatial information along the slit. (Our existing HRS data already give a preview of what the one- dimensional spatial distribution looks like in two narrow UV wavelength intervals, see ref.\\ 6.) Wide wavelength coverage is essential for the very special case of Eta Car, because the emission lines needed as diagnostics are very numerous and are spread across the whole wavelength range in the spectra of both A and BCD (see fig.\\ 3, and ref.\\ 8). In addition to the first-order- grating observations with a long slit, we also propose to make one NUV- MAMA/E230M echelle observation of a location in BCD (not on the star A). The bright emission lines in BCD are very narrow 6, so the echelle is needed to spectrally resolve some blends. Covering 2400--3100 Angstrom, we can easily get a spectral range 8 times wider than we obtained with the HRS. Of course the echelle data will refer to a small spatial region and cannot substitute for slit coverage of the same wavelength range. vspace2mm Acquisitions and related overhead time: After initial acquisition we do a peakup with the 0.1" slit, preferring wavelengths where the star A is much brighter than the blobs BCD. As advised in the instrument handbook, another peakup should be done several orbits later to compensate for drift. Thus the time required for acquisitions is --- Initial guide star acq., 9 minutes; initial onboard target acq., 8 minutes; two peakups, 2 * 5 minutes = 10 minutes; guide star re-acquisitions for orbits 2 --6, 5 * 6 minutes = 30 minutes. These items add up to 57 minutes. Overhead times associated with first-order-grating observations: To cover 1700- -10900 Angstrom we need 31 tilt settings of gratings G230MB, G430M, and G750M. According to the instrument handbook, 5 minutes must be allowed for each grating change or tilt change. ``Split'' exposures may be needed for each wavelength interval, but on the other hand we can reduce readout times if necessary by reading out only half of the CCD. (This may be necessary also in order to avoid a data backlog, with so many short exposures.) Let us allow 6 minutes overhead time for each grating tilt: 5 minutes for each tilt change plus 1 minute readout etc. Extra exposures for HAlpha and HBeta (see below) don't contribute enough to worry about at this point. A 5-minute extra allowance is required for the first STIS exposure. Thus the overhead time for the ``science exposures'' is (as well as can be estimated now) 5 + (31 * 6) = 191 minutes. Alas, this is unavoidably the most expensive item in the program. Exposure times for slit observations: An example from our calculations is given later. Basic needs are --- \\ Grating G230MB: 10 tilts, exposure times between 3 and 7 minutes totaling 45 minutes. \\ Grating G430M: 10 tilts, exposure times between 0.5 and 2 minutes totalling only 9 minutes. \\ Grating G750M: eleven grating tilts, each with an exposure time of a few seconds; total is only about 1 minute. Two additional very-short exposures are necessary to assuredly get the cores of the HAlpha and HBeta lines without CCD saturation. Altogether, the total exposure time for these observations is about 55 minutes. Echelle observation: NUV- MAMA grating E230M, central wavelength 2707 Angstrom. (This covers important sets of lines near 2507 and 2845 Angstrom that we observed with GHRS, plus many others.) Grating change, echelle peakup for 0.2X0.2 slit, and a small position offset should take about 15 minutes. A 15-minute exposure time gives satisfying numbers of counts in the moderate and bright lines, so altogether the echelle observation takes about 30 minutes. vspace2mm In summary, the time required is approximately 57 + 191 + 55 + 30 = 333 minutes. At the declination of Eta Car, 6 orbits would provide about 336 minutes of useful time (56 minutes per orbit), so our program is well matched to that number of orbits. Could we use fewer orbits? For an object with as many questions and applications as Eta Car, of course one can get worthwhile results with any number of orbits from 1 to 10 or more; but in asking for 6 we have made an honest, informed, experienced, and realistic effort to assess the point of diminishing scientific returns. Surely Eta Car deserves full wavelength coverage if any object does. Three or four of the grating tilts have lower priorities (relatively few emission lines), but deleting them would save only a fraction of an orbit. What if the STIS operation turns out to be more efficient than specified in the instrument handbook? (For example, grating tilts may be done quicker than allowed at present.) In that case, we shall use the extra time to get some observations at a slightly offset slit location. This would give additional spatial information within the ``ABCD'' region shown in fig.\\ 2. For red wavelengths they can also have longer exposure times than the main observations, thus providing better data in the larger-scale ejecta (fig.\\ 1). Fractional-arcsec offsets are reasonably fast with STIS. We omit wavelengths below 1700 Angstrom in this project, for three reasons: (1) Scattering by dust in the ABCD region blurs the situation in the far UV. (2) Necessary exposure times are much longer for those wavelengths, without commensurate payoff in useful information. (3) This object is so bright that we are not yet confident that it is safe to observe with the MAMA detectors (except with the echelle). A sample count-rate calculation: Consider the continuum level near HAlpha. Based on a reasonable extrapolation of our FOS results combined with other arguments, the stellar continuum flux (object A only) is F_lambda(6600rmAngstrom) ~ 3 * 10^-12 erg cm^-2 s^-1 AA^-1, and the STIS sensitivity with grating G750M is Sens/_Lambda^P ~ 1.2 * 10^15 cts pix_lambda^-1 per erg cm^-2 AA^-1. Summing the counts over 2 * 2 = 4 pixels, the product T_A Epsilon_f used on p.\\ 67 of the 6/96 STIS handbook is roughly 0.4 with a 0.1"--wide slit, and N_Lambdapix = 2 pixels. Thus the count rate in a 4--pixel sample is roughly (3 * 10^-12) * (1.2 * 10^15) * (0.4) * (2) ~ 3000 counts/s \\ in the continuum, , so a 5--second exposure would be more than adequate. Similar calculations show that rates with gratings G430M and G230MB are smaller by factors of the order of 10 and 200 respectively, and that the same exposure times are suitable for the ejecta BCD. Another calculation shows that the HAlpha line ``fills the well'' in its peak pixel after about 0.7 s, requiring a separate exposure of say 0.2 s for the core of this brightest line. Real Time Justification ----------------------- The STIS slit will have to be within a certain range of orientations, P.A.\\ ~ 125deg--155degrees or 305deg-- 335degrees. Eta Carinae is a possible CVZ object, but we frankly find it difficult to assess the pros and cons of this. For visit 2, The Event is expected to last only a few weeks, centered approx. 1998 Jan 1. REMARK ADDED OCTOBER 1997: Early 1998 is expected to be a critical time for Eta Carinae. A major spectroscopic event is predicted for 1998.0 and its aftermath -- a few months long -- provides an unusual opportunity to test certain binary-orbit-velocity predictions as well as other questions. (We did not fully recognize the importance of this time period when we submitted the original STIS proposal in 1996.) This is a special, emergency attempt to observe Eta Carinae during its brief Spectroscopic Event near the beginning of 1998. The observations are, essentially, a subset of those planned in Cycle 7 project GO 7302. However, the slit orientation is near PA = roughly 45 degrees in the present case, requiring separate target positions for the star and for the Weigelt CD ejecta about 0.2" NW of the star.
