Abstract ROSAT has recently observed equatorial x-ray emissions that imply a SIII longitude/solar local time dependent energetic ion precipitation from the inner radiation belts, which should produce observable enhancements to the H2 dayglow emission at low-latitudes. Therefore, the objective of this proposal is to search for signatures of the H2 dayglow enhancement and temperature variations in the equatorial region possibly due to heavy particle precipitation. This objective requires the STIS spectral imaging facility at low and medium spectral resolution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7309( 20) - 12/16/98 17:21 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ DESCRIPTION OF THE ORBITAL SCHEDULING For an H2 airglow of about 3 kR (peaking at about 100 R/A), the exposure times are calculated to give a S/N ratio= 10 with proper rebin. The STIS slit will located at low latitudes in the morning quadrant for orbit 3 and in the afternoon quadrant for orbit 4. 1. Orbit 1: the CML is about 40 deg (SIII); the STIS slit center is in the morning quadrant of Jupiter. 1.1 A 40 min exposure with the G140M element is taken, with the 52x2 arcsec slit and will be rebinned over 50 pixels (spectral resolution= 4A) and spatial resolution=1.2 arcsec). 1.2. A 1 min exposure with the G140L element is taken, with the 52x2. arcsec slit and will be rebinned over 50 pixels to give a spectral resolution of 48 A (20 pixels) and a spatial resolution about 1.25 arcsec. 1.3 A 2 min STIV/NUV image will be obtained to localize the limb. 2. Orbit 2: same set of exposures as orbit 1 with the slit located near the equator in the afternoon quadrant of Jupiter. Orbit 2 is consecutive to orbit 1. 3. Orbit 3: the CML is about 350 deg (SIII); the STIS slit center is in the morning quadrant of Jupiter. 3.1 A 50 min exposure with the G140L element is taken, with the 52x0.2 arcsec slit and will be rebinned over 20 pixels (spectral resolution= 4.8A) and spatial resolution=1.25 arcsec). 4. Orbit 4: consecutive to orbit 3 4.1 A 40M-ly-alpha image is taken using a Buffer-Time of about 120s on the morning side of Jupiter 4.2 A 25MAMA-Clear image of 300s is taken to localize the limb Real Time Justification ----------------------- Special scheduling requirement ******************************** The planet must be near opposition Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Data Distribution Paper Products: Media: DAT Blocking Factor: 10 Ship To: PI_Address Ship Via: Email: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7309( 20) -
