Abstract We propose to study how accretion disks interact with stars in young binary systems by measuring the rates that mass accumulates onto each component of the pair. The amount that photospheric absorption lines decrease in depth relative to lines of similar stars that lack accretion signatures defines how much excess continuum is present in the spectra, and this excess continuum is proportional to the mass accretion rate onto the star. Our proposed observations will also yield the spectral types, reddening, and luminosity of each star, so it will be possible to estimate the mass and age of each component by comparing the location of the stars in an HR- diagram with pre-main-sequence evolutionary tracks. The presence of high velocity O I Lambda6300 emission will enable us to test whether close young binaries drive single collimated jets, or if jets emerge from each component of the system. Our sample consists of 17 out of the known 18 subarcsecond binaries in theTAUrus dark cloud (projected separations between 10 AU and 140 AU) that possess accretion disks. The close separation range, which can only be observed with HST, is critical to our understanding of star formation because within this range protostellar disks are expected to change from being mostly circumstellar to being mostly circumbinary. The proposed observations will allow us to develop the first clear picture of how low mass binary stars and their surrounding accretion disks form and evolve. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7310( 35) - 12/28/00 09:49 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We have carefully designed our program to realize the maximum possible scientific impact with the minimum number of orbits. The most efficient use of telescope time is to observe more than one object at a time, and ideally, we would like to align the slit along each pair. The position angle of the slit is fixed for each visit, but we have identified 7 position angles that will allow us to observe both the primary and secondary in each pair. Figure 1 shows the position of the secondary with respect to the primary (open circle) for each pair taken from speckle observations, and indicates the slit positions for each visit. We were forced to eliminate only one subarcsecond cTTS binary (TTau) owing to an awkward position angle that would have required a separate visit, and its early-K spectral type that would have required additional templates to be observed. The wTTs used as photospheric templates must not have excessive rotational line broadening (< 30 kms), and must cover the range of spectral types expected in the pairs. Since the cTTS secondaries are fainter than the primaries they are probably cooler (K7 and later), and we have chosen our wTTs templates accordingly. As for our target objects, the most efficient way to observe wTTS is to measure two stars for each integration by observing binary pairs (note that these pairs need not have subarcsecond separations). We have chosen LkHAlpha 332/g2 (K7), LKCA7 (M0), 040047+2603W (M2), 040142+2150 (M3), and LkHAlpha 331 (M5.5) as templates. Each of these is a binary, so there are a total of 10 templates. Spectral types of the wTTs companions are unknown, but should also be later than those of their respective primaries. Our program demands high (30-50 km/s) resolution spectroscopy so we can resolve individual absorption lines and separate high velocity jet forbidden line emission from the corresponding low velocity component. For this reason we choose Lambda_c = 6252, a region of the spectrum that has strong individual TiO lines around 6150Angstrom\ and also covers O I Lambda6300. Low resolution spectroscopy is needed to measure spectral types, reddening, and will allow us to doublecheck for accretion using the equivalent width of HAlpha (which should be substantial in accreting systems) and verify that the companion is indeed a young star by looking for strong absorption in Li I Lambda6707. We do not know the V- magnitudes of the primary and secondary a-priori, but we can estimate these from the combined V-magnitude and DeltaK measured via speckle, provided we assume that DeltaV = DeltaK. This procedure may overestimate the brightness of the secondaries somewhat because secondaries will on average be redder than primaries, but the estimates should be accurate to within about a magnitude, which is comparable to the uncertainty caused by variability. The distribution of magnitudes for all the objects in our target list appears in Figure 2. High S/N spectra are essential when measuring optical excesses. At 50 kms resolution a typical photospheric absorption line drops to 70\ the difference between zero and 10\ we need to distinguish between an absorption line that reaches to 70\ A one-sigma detection of such a line requires S/N ~ 30. Fortunately, many lines are available in a single spectrum, but our experience with ground-based data has shown that the best results are obtained when S/N 30, and preferably ~ 50. For comparable S/N spectra, estimates of optical excess emission are always more accurate when measured with higher resolution spectra^21. The STIS exposure time calculator (also Figs 13.3 and 13.8 in the STIS manual) indicates that an exposure of 10 minutes with G750M gives a S/N of 40 at 6500 Angstrom\ for an M0 star with V=16. Likewise, a 5 minute exposure with G750L should give a S/N of 70. Most of the time required by this project is taken up in overhead. For each pair we need 9 min for GS acq, 8 min peakup, 2*5 min for grating changes, and 2 min CR-split = 29 min total. Hence, each pair requires 29 min overhead + 15 min integration = 44 min. An additional 5 minutes overhead are needed for the first exposure of each visit. The most efficient use of telescope time is to observe each object for one orbit, as this means that only 9 minutes are used for GS acq, as opposed to 9 (GS acq) + 6 (GS reacq) minutes if the integration is split across orbits. For these reasons we request one orbit per object, or 22 orbits in all.
