Abstract We propose to continue our systematic investigation of comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp). Our project began in Cycle 5 and is currently still executing in Cycle 6. In Cycle 7 the comet will be observed post-perihelion at heliocentric distances that are similar to what we have already covered pre- perihelion. We are monitoring emissions from OH, CS, and the CO Cameron system, which allows us to compare the heliocentric variation in the production rates of \water, \cstwo, and \cotwo\ (or possibly CO, if electron impact on CO dominates the excitation of the Cameron bands), respectively. Thus, our program provides valuable and unique (since IUE is no longer operational) information on the sublimation behavior of the comet. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7313( 4) - 12/22/97 17:28 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ This program is divided into 4 visits with 2 orbits for each visit for a total of 8 orbits. All observations are done using STIS. The visits are defined by their observing windows: visit 1: 25-AUG-97 to 09-SEP-97 visit 2: 10-NOV-97 to 23-NOV-97 visit 3: 09-FEB-98 to 22-FEB-98 visit 4: 22-JUN-98 to 03-JUL-98 These windows were carefully chosen to give the desired sampling of Hale-Bopp's sublimation behavior with heliocentric distance, so please consult with the PI before deviating from this plan. The first two visits are CCD-only observations with the following orbit activities: orbit 1: GS ACQ ONBOARD ACQ using STIS/CCD STIS/CCD ACCUM using G230MB with CR-SPLIT=4 and 52X2 aperture orbit 2: GS REACQ STIS/CCD ACCUM using G230LB with CR-SPLIT=4 and 52X0.5 aperture STIS/CCD ACCUM with MIRROR (verification image) STIS/CCD ACCUM with MIRROR (verification image) G230MB is used to measure the OH(0,0) band at an effective resolution of 6 A, and the G230LB is used to measure the CS and CO Cameron band emissions at an effective resolution of 13 A for a source that fills the aperture. The last two visits use the STIS/CCD for target acquisition and pointing verification and use the STIS/MAMA for the spectroscopic observations. The orbit activities for each of this visits are: orbit 1: GS ACQ ONBOARD ACQ using STIS/CCD STIS/NUV-MAMA ACCUM using G230L with 2 exps and 52X0.2 aperture orbit 2: GS REACQ STIS/NUV-MAMA ACCUM using G230L with 2 exps and 52X0.2 aperture STIS/CCD ACCUM with MIRROR (verification image) STIS/CCD ACCUM with MIRROR (verification image) G230L covers all wavelengths of interest in our program at a resolution of 13 A for a source that fills the aperture.
