Abstract Saturn's medium-sized icy satellites display a diverse range of surface alteration caused by one or more external processes. We will investigate the role of magnetospheric charged particle interactions with the surfaces of these satellites by searching for spectral signatures of ion- irradiated ice. To do this, we will complete the investigation begun in cycle 6 by obtaining the first high S/N, ultraviolet wavelength spectra of Enceladus and Tethys to wavelengths as short as 1800 Angstrom . We will search in particular for the strong Hartley band of ozone at 2600 Angstrom ; O_3 is formed by the impact of O^+ ions in ice. We have recently used this band to identify ozone on Ganymede, which resides in a plasma environment similar to that of Saturn's satellites. A spectrum of Rhea's trailing hemisphere also shows evidence of possible O_3 absorption. Enceladus and Tethys are key to this effort because they exhibit significantly higher UV albedos than Rhea, Dione, or Iapetus. Enceladus, in particular, shows evidence of recent resurfacing, and is, therefore, an important end-member for our study. Enceladus and Tethys reside in a portion of Saturn's magnetosphere where the ion density is high, but the average energy per impacting ion is low, providing a crucial test of these parameters in the formation of chemical contaminants in the surface ice. Other possible absorbers include H_2O_2, HO_2, SO_2, and simple hydrocarbons which show distinct UV structure. No other telescope or instrument is capable of these measurements. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7316( 62) - 11/13/00 17:00 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We are proposing to obtain the first ultraviolet spectra of Saturn's mid-sized icy satellites Enceladus and Tethys. The HST is the only instrument capable of such measurements. The IUE did measure several of the Saturn satellites, but never produced an albedo spectrum for any. The existing ratio spectra of trailing/leading hemispheres have low S/N (~1-3) and extend only to 260 nm. STIS is well able to produce high S/N spectra for these objects as demonstrated in Table 2 below. We will observe the leading and trailing hemispheres of Enceladus and Tethys with each of the four visits requiring 2 orbits. The result will be a moderate to high S/N spectrum of each satellite hemisphere from ~ 180 - 570 nm. The lower limit will be defined by an expected drop in reflectivity of \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\HOH\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ ice and the rapidly decreasing solar flux. Scattered visible light will be significantly reduced in the STIS NUV MAMA due to the Cs_2Te photocathode, a significant advantage over the FOS. During the first orbit we will acquire the target into the 52 x 0.2 arcsec aperture including a peakup in order to minimize scattered light from Saturn and the rings. The maximum angular diameters of Enceladus and Tethys are 0.08 and 0.17 arcsec, respectively, so there will be minimal loss of flux outside the narrow slit. In the remaining time during the first orbit we will obtain an approximately 5 minute exposure in the CCD with the G430L grating. The S/N will be >50 per resolution element over the entire wavelength interval, 310-570 nm, covered by this grating. It is very important to obtain high S/N because of the very complex solar spectrum that must be removed to create an albedo spectrum. In the second orbit after reacquisition of guide stars, we will expose the NUV MAMA for approximately 30 minutes (in two 15 minute exposures). Predicted S/N at 200nm is listed below. At wavelengths of 260nm and longer the expected S/N is 50 or greater for both Enceladus and Tethys. At shorter wavelengths we will increase S/N by binning data points to lower resolution. The width of expected spectral features in the satellites is tens of nanometers FWHM, significantly greater than the resolution of 0.16 nm, so rebinning to improve S/N will not impair detection of broad features. It is worth noting that even though a portion of the G430L grating can be done from ground-based telescopes, it is essential to obtain high quality spectra in the interval from 310-400 nm, which is extremely difficult to do from the ground, in order to allow overlap with longer wavelength data sets in the visible. On Ganymede, the \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\oz\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ absorption feature appears to extend beyond the end of the STIS/NUV G230L range. It is critical to obtain a spectral range broad enough that a local continuum can be determined. We require observations of both leading and trailing hemispheres of Enceladus and Tethys. Both satellites show evidence of hemispheric heterogeneity at visible wavelengths. In the jovian satellite system this has been associated with hemispheric UV spectral differences, though a causal connection has not been established. Unrelated sources of visible albedo differences such as meteorite bombardment can be constrained by obtaining spectra of both hemispheres. In addition, broad, weak features are most easily identified in ratios of spectra of leading and trailing hemispheres because the ``continuum'' is difficult to define. Our program requires a total of eight orbits to obtain this data. Mimas also falls into the category of UV bright objects, but with a V magnitude of 12.9 is faint enough that we will bypass it in this cycle. The UV albedo of Enceladus has not been measured and we assume a value of f=1. Visible- wavelength albedos were taken from Roush et al. (1995). In calculating S/N at 200nm and 350nm we increased the effective magnitude of Tethys by 10^-2.5 f. Calculations were done with the STIS exposure time calculator.
