Abstract We will use NICMOS to obtain deep IR photometry of the most metal-rich and most metal-poor globular clusters near the Galactic Center. We will use these data to determine accurate ages for our target clusters to test two ideas. First, are the clusters in the central regions the oldest clusters because star formation began there first due to the higher densities? Second, is there a significant age difference between the most metal-poor and most metal-rich clusters? We will observe NGC 6287, the most metal-poor globular cluster within 1 kpc of the Galactic Center (Fe/H=-2.0) and Liller 1 and Pal 6, among the most metal-rich (if not the most metal -rich) globulars in the Galaxy (Fe/H=+0.2 and -0.1, respectively). All three clusters lie within ~1 kpc of the Galactic Center. If abundance increased monotonically with time and mixing was rapid, these clusters will span the entire age range of globular clusters at the Galactic Center, giving us the largest lever arm on any age differences we find. Failure to detect an age difference will imply that star formation and chemical enrichment occurred rapidly in the inner halo if the clusters shared a common origin. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7318( 7) - 12/02/97 16:51 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We intend to use two age diagnostics for these clusters, the magnitude difference between the HB and MSTO (often referred to as the DeltaV method; Iben & Faulkner 1968, ApJ, 153, 101) and the color difference between the MSTO and the locus of stars at the base of the red giant branch (RGB; often referred to as the VBS method, VandenBerg et al. 1992). The excellent deep globular cluster IR photometry of Davidge et al. (e.g. Davidge & Simons 1994, ApJ, 435, 207 and 1994, ApJ, 423, 640) has demonstrated that IR photometry is just as powerful at providing globular cluster ages to within +/-~1--2 Gyr. Our bandpasses of choice will be J (F110W) and H (F160W). To develop a chronology for the inner clusters compared to the clusters farther out in the Galaxy, we intend to observe two ``calibration'' clusters, one metal-rich and one metal- poor. These clusters should be clusters with good ground- based optical and (if possible) IR photometry. This will allow us to place the relative ages of our target clusters on an age scale that is consistent with other clusters whose ages have ages obtained from optical photometry. Two excellent calibration clusters exist, 47 Tuc (NGC 104) and M92 (NGC 6341). In addition to their use as age calibrators, observations of these clusters will allow us to compare NICMOS and ground-based JH photometric transformations to ensure that our magnitudes and colors are well-calibrated. We need to achieve a signal-to-noise ratio of 100 approximately one magnitude below the MSTO of each cluster to derive relative ages between the target and comparison clusters to within +/-1 Gyr. We intend to take a series of exposures with sub-arcsecond dithering to help with undersampling, similar to what many observers have done with WFPC2. Although the NIC2 Camera is a factor of 2--3 more poorly sampled than WFC, the very small field of view of NIC2 (20*20) means we would need many mosaics to obtain a significant number of stars on the often sparse sub-giant branch. The loss of confocality of the Cameras means that we cannot observe will all three Cameras simultaneously, therefore we have elected to choose NIC2 and attempt to reconstruct the images somewhat with dithering. If we take 3 exposures each with S/N ~ 60, we should achieve the desired faint limit. Since we need to observe the entire dynamic range from the RGB tip to below the MSTO, we will use the MULTIACCUM readout mode.
