Abstract We propose multispectral WFPC2 and NICMOS imaging of Neptune to investigate the time dependent vertical structure and spatial distribution of its isolated cloud features and zonal bands, the form and stability of its mean circulation, the evolution of known features, and the possible development of major new features such as great dark spots or outbursts. We propose to image one rotation of Neptune using nine HST orbits, six for WFPC2 and three for NICMOS imaging to obtain contiguous longitudinal coverage sufficient for a thorough cloud census and approximate circulation measurements. A second sequence of four partial maps, covering a second Neptune rotation with combined WFPC2 and NICMOS imaging within each orbit, provides more accurate wind estimates for the persistent features and identifies evolving features. Filters are chosen to use Rayleigh scattering, methane bands, and the 2.1- micron hydrogen CIA band to sense different atmospheric levels needed to constrain vertical structure. IRTF measurements in strong methane and hydrogen bands during simultaneous HST imaging in August 1996 imply great utility for the much higher resolution NICMOS capabilities at these wavelengths. These observations will also extend the time base of HST Neptune imaging in 1991, 1994, 1995, and 1996, facilitating the study of longer term variations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7324( 25) - 05/08/98 16:40 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ WFPC2 FILTERS AND EXPOSURES. Six WFPC2 filters are used for mapping discrete atmospheric features. The F467M filter provides by far the best contrast for detecting dark features. The remaining filters all provide good views of bright discrete cloud features with varying amounts of Rayleigh scattering and methane absorption to provide height discrimination. F336W, which does not show discrete cloud features, is used to investigate high altitude zonal patterns which provide clues about stratospheric meridional motions. The WFPC2 images provide longitudinal coverage adequate for a thorough cloud census, except at 30N where a small dark spot was seen in 1996 F467M images, but where the tilt of Neptune's polar axis reduces longitudinal coverage that can be obtained from a single image. The first visit also provides enough overlapping coverage to make an approximate measure of cloud motions, which can be refined for longer lasting clouds by observations on a second rotation of Neptune covered by the next four visits. These visits also provide additional F467M observations that help to fill in gaps left from the first three visits. Because of overhead costs in operating both NICMOS and WFPC2 within the same visibility period, a reduced filter set must be employed for the last four visits.
