Abstract HST has provided striking images of circumstellar disks towards young stars, seen silhouetted in absorption against bright nebular backgrounds. The advent of the near -infrared NICMOS camera on HST brings subarcsecond imaging to even younger sources, protostars. The NIR resolution of 0.2'' compares favorably with the expected ~ 1'' disks of nearby protostars. Too heavily extincted for visible wavelength imaging (A_V >= 30), accreting protostars are nonetheless often bright NIR targets. The small scale structure of their reflection nebulae provides a venue for scattering/absorption studies of the collapsing protostellar envelope and protostellar disk. The NICMOS images, combined with Monte Carlo scattering models will test theories of cloud collapse, constrain protostellar wind models, and delineate the early formation of protostellar disks. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7325( 3) - 03/31/97 16:46 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Ground-based NIR images show a peaked source (2"PSF) surrounded by conical reflection nebulosity. The emission peak is scattered light, not direct stellar photons. At HST's resolution the central 2" should (hopefully) show significant structure and might not look centrally peaked. There may be a dust lane seen in absorption against the reflection nebulosity. There is also the possibility of a bright central source, so that a high dynamic range will be required to see the surrounding nebulosity. The images will be compared with Monte Carlo scattering models. The focus is determining the geometry of the disk, wind, and infall envelope. The best way to do this is through high spatial resolution multi-band imaging. Since there is not sufficient time to do 3-band imaging for all the sources, the goal is to obtain high-spatial resolution images in one band (F160W) for all sources in order to constrain the source geometry. Additional filters, (as time allows), provide information on the density distribution. This experiment wants better spatial resolution (0.3") than is available from ground-based images (0.5"). This experiment assumes HST can provide a PSF from the calibration database that is accurate to 10--20percent. Knowledge of the spatial resolution will be used in the modeling, where the models will be convolved with the PSF for comparison with the HST images. In 9 allocated orbits there are 8 sources observed using NICMOS camera 2 in normal imaging mode. 1st priority. Good F160W images of all 8 targets. Implementation; SNR=100 time estimates and dithered at 2 positions. 2nd priority. Good 3 band images of TMC1A(Target3) using 2 orbits. Implementation; SNR=100 on F160W, F187W, and F205W. All bands dithered. F187W and F205W chopped. 3rd priority. Good F205 images on targets if time allows (7 targets). 4th priority. Suite of additional filters on 2 brightest targets as time allows. If these exposure times assuming SNR=100 times will actually achieve less than SNR=50 then the exposure times in this program will need to be revised. RPS2 runs with a feasibility error, that occurs because the background chopping is accomplished through a POS TARG command.
