Abstract By measuring the structural properties of high redshift cluster elliptical galaxies, we aim to resolve the controversy regarding the age and formation history of bright cluster ellipticals. We propose to use NICMOS SNAPshot observations in combination with our ground-based survey for high-z (z > 0.4) clusters to obtain data for 60 brightest cluster ellipticals and about 600 cluster ellipticals that is directly comparable, in both resolution and rest-frame wavelength, to that available data for their local counterparts. HST resolution will enable us to determine if these galaxies are evolving solely in luminosity or whether they are evolving in scale and/or surface brightness, and whether they exhibit signatures of interactions. Only with HST can we separate the effects of mass evolution and luminosity evolution. Our ground -based redshifts and optical colors will complete the picture. Snapshot observations are ideally suited to obtaining both sufficient detail on the brightest galaxies and sample a large number of clusters. This sample, for which we do not claim proprietary data-rights, will be an immediate resource for the community. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7327( 4) - 05/23/97 16:10 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We are proposing for a SNAPshot survey of bright cluster ellipticals at redshifts from z=0.4 to beyond z=1, using the NICMOS Camera 2 with the F160W filter (corresponding roughly to the H band). The choice of Camera 2 gives us sufficient resolution for morphological typing (~700 pc per resolution element at z=1) without greatly compromising our desire for sampling a significant fraction of the cluster. At z=1, the 19.5" field of view encompasses the 0.1 Mpc core of the cluster. We chose the F160W, which corresponds roughly to between rest-frame R and I at z=0.5 and R at z=1.0, rather than the F110W filter, which corresponds to between B and R for the same redshift range, because the R through I observations are simpler to interpret. At the two extremes of our redshift distribution, brightest cluster ellipticals (BCGs) have been observed to have have K=15.5-18 (Aragon- Salamanca et al 1992). Stanford et al (1995) find H-K=0.6 for clusters at z=0.4, and we expect this to increase to H-K=0.8 for clusters at z=1, based on spectral synthesis. This suggests H = 16.1-18.8 for the BCGs, or F_nu(BCG)=4e-4 - 3e-5 Jy over our range of interest. The mean surface brightness within an effective radius for these galaxies is mu_eff =17-18.5 K-mag/sqr-arcsec, or F_nu(BCG)=1e-4 - 2e-5 Jy/sqr- arcsec over an area of ~530 pixels (based on Pahre et al 1996, assuming r_eff=10 kpc). In a 20 minute snapshot window, we expect 660s of observation time (leaving 9 minutes for guide star acquisition), which would give a typical SNR of >200 for BCGs at z=0.4 and a SNR of > 40 for BCGs at z=1, for the F160W filter using Camera 2. Thus, high-redshift BCGs will be easily detected, even in short exposures. For these galaxies we will be able to measure structural parameters. We expect at least 600 cluster galaxies for the complete program. With a 660s integration time, we should be able to detect a point source with H=22, assuming a SNR of 10. Thus, we should be able to not only detect the BCG, but smaller ellipticals down to H=22 as well. For these galaxies, we will not be able to measure robust structural parameters, but we will be able to derive a morphological classification. Using the H-K colors above, and extrapolating from the results of Aragon-Salamanca et al (1992) for the K band, we expect 0.02-0.04 galaxies per square arcsecond down to H=22 in the cluster core at z=1. Thus, there should be roughly 7- 15 cluster galaxies detected per NICMOS FOV, even at z=1. We are able to provide a target list sorted by redshift, such that the more distant clusters could be preferentially observed during longer snapshot windows, if such scheduling flexibility were possible. Field contamination is a much smaller problem for infrared images of high redshift clusters than for optical images, due to the extremely red colors of high- redshift ellipticals. Based on the Gardner et al (1993) K-band field counts, we expect only 2 field galaxies in each NICMOS image, assuming H_lim=22. The parallel images from Cameras 1 & 3 are sufficiently far from the cluster center that they can be used to derive a correction for the small contamination by field galaxies. Our scientific goals depend upon observing a large number of clusters. To truly constrain the mean behavior of cluster ellipticals, we need to widely sample the cluster population in any redshift interval and obtain a total sample size comparable to local samples. However, the feasibility of our program does not depend upon a high completion rate for this program. We expect 25% of the clusters to be at z>0.75, and 10% at z>1. Thus, 80% completion of our program will still be sufficient to give us 20 clusters with z>0.75, and 8 clusters at z>1. To date there is only 1 cluster with comparable data at z>1 (Dickinson 1995).
