Abstract We propose a Snapshot Infrared Imaging Survey (IRIS) of the centers of the nearest active galaxies at a resolution of ~20 pc. Observing in the near-IR minimizes the dust obscuration and maximizes sensitivity to the old stellar population which dominates the mass. Imaging with the NICMOS-1 camera is the best way to determine reliably the frequency in Seyfert 1's and 2's of: nuclear gas disks and rings, bipolar outflows, jets, collisions and mergers, bars and other asymmetries, and nuclear starbursts. We will analyze these high resolution nuclear images jointly with our extensive visible/IR/radio ground-based observations of the same objects. We will also compare these IRIS Snapshots with NICMOS images of a control sample of the nearby normal galactic nuclei which is carefully matched in redshift, morphological type, total magnitude, isophotal diameter and inclination. This will identify which peculiar nuclear structures are associated with nonstellar activity, which are associated with starbursts, and which are found equally often in all galaxies. We will determine if the Sy 1 and Sy 2 galaxies are similar in all orientation-independent morphological characteristics, as predicted by Unified Schemes. Potential targets are the 106 nearest (z < 0.019) active galaxies which are not being imaged in other NICMOS programs. Excellent SNRs in the inner regions of the galaxies will be obtained in 400 -- 500 second exposures with F160W. We will release the images within 90 days of receiving them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7328( 10) - 06/03/97 14:13 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ section*I. Target Selection and its Relation to Other HST Research Potential targets are all 106 Seyfert galaxies with redshifts less than 0.019 from the Veron, Veron-Cety Catalog of Active Galaxies (1993), excluding those galaxies which are in the GTOs' planned NICMOS programs. In Phase II we will make a careful search to eliminate all possible duplications with any other observer. section*Exposure Times and Imaging Modes Our experience with Snapshots of galactic nuclei has shown that the longest available integration time is usually the best, because: a) each observation requires a substantial overhead time which is independent of the integration time; b) there is hardly any possibility of saturating the central portions of any non-Seyfert galaxies; and c) some of the more interesting morphological details are faint or low- contrast, and are more visible after longer integration times. Therefore, we propose to obtain 400---500 second observations (depending on the length of the schedule gap to be filled by the Snapshot) for each of these galaxies with the highest- resolution mode, NICMOS-1 in F160W. There is little danger of reaching saturation in Camera 1 except for the brighter Seyfert 1 nuclei. In fact saturating their central pixels would not compromise our science goals. We did this routinely for the Seyfert 1's observed in our WFPC2 snapshots. We were nonetheless able to detect faint off-nuclear structures (see Fig. 2 for example). And we were able to recover real photometry of the central point source by fitting its unsaturated wings. This same procedure should allow us to measure the H magnitudes of the bright Seyfert 1 nuclei, while at the same time having the sensitivity to detect low- contrast features such as dust filaments. If enough time is allocated, we will try to break up our exposures on the brightest Seyfert 1 nuclei into two or three consecutive pieces to minimize the risk of nuclear saturation. Since these are the NEAREST active galaxies, simultaneous ``coordinated parallel" observations with the NICMOS-2 camera of the outer parts of the same galaxy will often be possible. section*Data Analysis We will use the galaxy images to search for nuclear peculiarities. In collaboration with L. Hunt (Arcetri), we have gathered large-format near-IR images of 90 of the brightest Sefyert galaxies. When one of these is imaged by the IRIS, we will combine the data, for IRAF ellipse-fitting over the widest possible range of surface brightnesses. The output of Ellipse will be checked for signs of triaxiality (variations in ellipticity or position angle of isophotes as a function of radius) and other deviations from azimuthal symmetry, such as dust lanes which penetrate the nucleus. Obtaining better, more robust and practical ways of measuring nuclear peculiarities is in fact one of the subsidiary goals of this archival investigation. We will obtain any available archival HST images of each galaxy which will be imaged in our Snapshot IRIS. The ratio of these short -wavelength pictures to our near-IR image will provide color measurements over a wide wavelength baseline. These color images will be searched for low-optical-depth dust lanes, and color gradients. Waiving the Full Proprietary Period. Given the volume of data and the fact that the observations will not be complete until near the end of the cycle 7, the full proprietary period might be warranted. However, our experience with analyzing the data from our previous snapshots, and our awareness of the general interest in this data, prompts us to waive half of the standard one year time span for proprietary rights. We will release the Snapshots within 90 days of the observations. Conclusion. The highest resolution investigation of the centers of a large number of the nearest active galaxies, is one of the scientifically broadest surveys NICMOS can undertake in Snapshot mode. Future researchers will undoubtedly use this unusually general- purpose database to address new issues which have not yet been anticipated. We believe that our SNAPSHOT survey will generate an unusually high proportion of broadly applicable, scientifically invaluable data, for a relatively small investment of HST resources. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None. Many of our proposed targets have published and unpublished ground based images available with 1.0 - 1.5 arcsecond seeing. These may allow us to trace some faint features (such as tidal tails, faint wisps or spiral arms and dust lanes) out to larger radii. These will also be useful in determining global parameters for each galaxy, such as the optical/infrared colors, the inclination of the disk and/or flattening of the spheroid, and bulge/disk ratio. We will also obtain follow-up deep multicolor ground-based images (at Lick Observatory) and VLA radio maps, using the A-array which has high resolution comparable to the WFPC2, of ALL galaxies visible from the Northern hemisphere which are eventually observed in the Snapshot Survey. We will propose for multicolor CCD imaging of the remaining unobserved Southern galaxies from CTIO.
