Abstract The damped LyAlpha absorption line systems (DLAs), occasionally found in quasar spectra, provide one of only a few practical methods of detecting and studying significant numbers of galaxies at high redshifts. DLAs provide a completely different identification technique which is not biased in the same ways as other searches for emission-line or ``UV-dropout" objects. The NICMOS coronograph is by far the best instrument available to detect the young or primeval galaxies which produce DLAs, because they are faint, red, and usually within 1 or 2 arcseconds of a relatively bright quasar. The NICMOS team has a GTO program to use the coronograph for detailed studies (2 orbits) of one DLA in Cycle 7 and two DLAs in Cycle 8. We propose a complementary Snapshot Survey which, although it might miss a few DLA galaxies if they are more than a magnitude fainter than L_*, will cover more than an order-of-magnitude more targets. These individual 500-second Snapshots will have the sensitivity to detect unambiguously dozens of galaxies at z >= 2, which are required to answer inherently statistical questions about DLAs, including: a) What is their luminosity function? b) What are their sizes and morphologies? Are they related in appearance to present-day galaxies? c) Do they have any properties which correlate with the redness of the background quasar (which may be due to dust absorption)? and d) How does their H I column density vary with impact parameter? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7329( 10) - 09/16/98 10:04 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ section*Target Selection Our target candidates include all confirmed DLAs -- with N(H I) > 2 X 10^20 cm^-2 -- not being imaged in other HST programs. These will be taken from the surveys by Wolfe et al. (1986), Lanzetta et al. (1991), Lu and Wolfe (1994), Lanzetta, Wolfe & Turnshek (1995), Wolfe et al. (1995), Storrie-Lombardi et al. (1996), and Storrie- Lombardi, Irwin, and McMahon (1996). The number of confirmed DLAs is nearly 100 and growing. Their numbers, and random distribution on the sky, are well-suited to the Snapshot mode of operation. If half or even a third of these potential targets are scheduled for Snapshots, we will increase the total number of identified DLA galaxies by nearly an order of magnitude . section*Exposure Times and Operating Modes Most Snapshot scheduling opportunities are 20 to 25 minutes long. After the guide star acquisition, we will be left with about 12 minutes on the field. The coronograph adds 98 seconds of overhead for reading out a sub-image, and moving the brightest point in the field (the center of the quasar) underneath the center of the occulting spot. Since the quasar is bright, 20 second centering exposures will be ample. Therefore we will have about 500 seconds remaining for integration. The scattered quasar light, falling outside the 0.6 arcsecond- diameter occulting disk of the coronograph, will have a very low surface brightness. Typical quasars at z = 2.5 with visual magnitudes of 18.5, with a blue to UV slope of -0.6 (Malkan 1988, Francis et al. 1993), will have H = 16.5. If approximately 5 r = 0.3 to 0.7 arcseconds, its average surface brightness in this annulus is only 0.01 mJy per square arcsecond. Evolutionary models, consistent with the limited existing data, predict a typical L_* galaxy at z = 2.5 will have an H magnitude of 20.0 +/- 0.5. When such galaxies have actually been found, they are always very compact, almost point-like. We will consider a rather pessimistic case of a galaxy one magnitude fainter than L_* whose light is spread uniformly throughout a 0.4 arcsecond disk, which would have a predicted H surface brightness of 0.02 to 0.05 mJy per square arcsecond. This exceeds the expected scattered light, and will have a completely different spatial distribution: a compact source superposed on a relatively smooth ring of background light with a known radial profile. Thus it should not be difficult to separate a faint galaxy from the scattered quasar light, even if the centering is imperfect. Using the NICMOS Time Estimator over the Web, we find that in 500 seconds of integration, Camera 2 will measure the surface brightness of our faint galaxy alone with a SNR of 5 to 10 in each of the 22 pixels we estimated it will cover. Even dwarfish galaxies, with luminosities only a tenth of L_* should be detectable if: a) the scattered light profile of the coronograph can be accurately characterized so that most of it can be subtracted off; or b) the galaxy has an impact parameter of 0.7 arcseconds or more; or c) the galaxy is smaller than a 0.4 arcsecond disk. A galaxy within a magnitude of L_* should be detectable even if its center lies within the occulting disk, since we still can detect the piece of it which extends out beyond a radius of 0.4 arcseconds from the quasar. section*Planned Data Analysis This survey is principally aimed at detection. We require a reliable way to determine the level at which DLA galaxies are distinguishable from the background scattered light. Therefore, we will develop robust thresholds for detection by characterizing the PSF and scattering profiles at 1.6Mum of the coronograph. We will analyze available F160W coronograph images of stars to determine how accurately the scattered light can be subtracted, and the limits on the brightness of the faintest residual sources that can be reliably detected. Once the DLAs are detected, we will measure their H-magnitudes, sizes, and shapes. The magnitudes, sizes, and shapes will be correlated with other known characteristics, such as redshift and H I column density at a given impact parameter. The DLAs will be analyzed in aggregate for their population characteristics (e.g., the luminosity function). section*``Coordinated Parallel" Observations Will be Unusually Valuable Many of the parallel observations obtained by extragalactic programs, other than clusters or the nearest galaxies, will be of blank fields. The form and amount of clustering of DLAs with other galaxies is not known. If Snapshot scheduling permits, we will simultaneously utilize NIC-1, (NIC-3 if available), WFPC2, and STIS to image fields within 1 to 5 arcminutes of the DLA being imaged by NIC-2 and the coronograph. We will select the longest exposure times allowed by the schedule. These would have the potential of detecting the brighter distant galaxies which might be clustered around either the DLA galaxy, or perhaps the background quasar. These parallel observations, especially in conjunction with the ground- based data we will obtain, will be useful in identifying promising high- redshift candidates for future observations. section*Waiving the Full Proprietary Period Given the volume of data and the fact that the observations of the full statistical sample will not be complete until near the end of the Cycle 7, the full proprietary period might be warranted. However, our experience with analyzing the data from a previous Snapshot survey prompts us to waive half of the standard one-year time span for proprietary rights. We propose to release each image 180 days after it is obtained, and will publish a catalog with preliminary statistical analyses after the first half of the cycle's observations are in hand. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None. Imaging and spectroscopic follow-up observations will be made at Keck of the DLA and DLA-adjacent fields imaged by WFPC2 and STIS, to search for distant galaxies near the same redshift as the DLA galaxy. This will provide an unusual opportunity to look for large-scale clustering structures of 0.5 to 2.5 Megaparsecs size in the early Universe. If some are detected, they will provide a comparison with high- redshift galaxies in the same environment, selected by different search techniques. We will also obtain accurate spectrophotometry of each quasar imaged, for an accurate measure of its colors, to check for a possible correlation with the DLA galaxy properties.
