Abstract Galactic bars are frequently invoked as a candidate for facilitating the transfer of mass from the interstellar medium of active galaxies to their central engines. However, recent ground-based studies of Seyferts indicate the incidence of bars in these active galaxies is no higher than that in normal spiral galaxies. Furthermore, numerical simulations indicate that gas inflow generated by a large-scale stellar bar does not extend down to the scales required to feed the central engine. However, these simulations also indicate that a series of nested gaseous bars may form in some cases, driving inflow of gas to the scales where the central blackhole dominates the potential. We propose to test this \lq\lq bars-within- bags\rq\rq \ model for fueling the nucleus with a NICMOS snapshot survey of a sample of Seyfert and normal galaxies. Ground-based near-infrared images already exist for these galaxies, but only the resolution of NICMOS can reach the size scales needed (10--50 pc) to test the model. We will combine the NICMOS images with existing data to: 1) search for small- scale stellar bars and the dust associated with gaseous bars, 2) search for differences between the active and normal galaxies that might explain the differences in observed activity, 3) search for nuclear tori expected in unified AGN models, and 4) compare the properties of small-scale bars, dust lanes and nuclear tori with the large-scale morphological features we see in our ground-based images. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7330( 6) - 06/02/98 16:25 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Our sample consists of the 91 Seyfert galaxies that meet the Revised Shapely- Ames magnitude requirement (B_ T < 13.4) and 91 normal galaxies selected from the RSA, matched to the Seyfert sample in blue magnitude, galaxy morphology, distance and inclination. Five of the Seyferts will be observed as part of NICMOS GTO programs and will not need to be reobserved for our program. Thus, our final sample contains 177 objects. NICMOS images will be taken with filter F160W using Camera 2 to obtain diffraction limited sampling. We have chosen F160W since it is the longest wavelength with a low background, providing us with high sensitivity in a band relatively unaffected by dust extinction. Most of the objects in our sample have recessional velocities in the range of 1000-- 5000 km/s, corresponding to a resolution (2 pixels) of 10--50 pc with NICMOS (H_ o = 75 km s^-1 Mpc^-1). Many of our galaxies have been imaged in the optical (i.e. F606W) as part of previous snapshot surveys (Malkan: \lq\lq Subarcsecond Structure in Nearby AGN\rq\rq \ , Illingworth: \lq\lq The Nuclei of Nearby S0 and Spiral Galaxies: A PC Snapshot Imaging Survey\rq\rq \ ). Thus, we will be able to produce color maps and search for dust structures on the tens-of-parsec scales. Given the drifts in pointing using only gyro pointing control, we will require a guide star for these observations. Thus, an acquisition overhead of ~ 5 minutes will be required. For a visibility of 17 minutes, we will have nearly 12 minutes of on-source integration. Our ground- based images indicate that the central regions of the normal spiral galaxies have surface brightnesses in the range 14--16 K mag/arcsec^2. Using the NICMOS exposure time calculator, we estimate a signal-to-noise of 15--40 per pixel for this magnitude range in a 11 minute exposure with Camera 2 and F160W. For the faintest objects, a signal-to-noise of 5 per pixel can be achieved in a 2 minute integration, so even short exposures should produce useful images. Furthermore, our ground-based images indicate that the nuclei of the Seyfert galaxies may be several magnitudes brighter than the normal galaxies. As saturation of the central pixels may occur in some of the Seyferts in long integrations, we will use MULTIACCUM mode to reconstruct these pixels when necessary. We waive nine months of our proprietary data rights period so that the scientific community can have quick access to the images. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None. Ground-based K-band images have been obtained and reduced for both the RSA Seyfert sample and the normal galaxy sample (Mulchaey, Regan & Kundu 1996). These images were taken with the Kitt Peak 2.1m, the Palomar 1.5 meter and the Las Campanas 2.5 meter. The typical on-source integration time for these observations was 30 minutes. We have also obtained optical broad-band (BVRI) images for all the sample galaxies. In addition, a subset of the RSA Seyfert sample is being observed with the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland (BIMA) millimeter array in ^ 12CO (1-0). With the recently expanded 9-element array, sub- arcsecond resolution is obtainable. The CO maps will allow gaseous bars on the 200-300 pc scale to be studied. Both Mulchaey and Regan are part of the BIMA key project team studying Seyferts.
