Abstract We propose to carry out a NICMOS snapshot survey in F160W for a sample of 134 nearby, normal, non-barred, non edge-on, Sa and Sb spiral galaxies. The survey is a follow up of a cycle 6 WFPC2 snapshot survey and aims at investigating the core properties of spiral galaxies, their correlations with global galactic properties, and the color distribution of central point sources and multiple nuclei. The available F606W images have revealed the widespread presence of dust down to the smallest scales accessible with HST and a wide variety of nuclear morphologies, including spiral structure often reaching distances of 10 pc or less from the center. Near-IR data at HST resolution are essential for correcting for the effect of dust and will enable us to derive robust nuclear properties for the sample. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7331( 4) - 06/19/97 10:29 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The observing strategy will depend on whether NICMOS internal parallel observations will be possible in cycle 7. If they are, the core of the galaxy will be placed in Camera 1 to exploit the best pixel size. Camera 2 and Camera 3 will be used to obtain data on the globular cluster population and structure at larger radii. If NICMOS internal parallel observations will not be possible, the galaxy core will be placed in Camera 2, since this is the best compromise between a reasonably well sampled PSF at 1.6 Mu and a significant field of view. The positions of all galaxies were measured to better than 1 arcsec on the same plates used to derive GSC positions and have been now refined by remeasuring on the WFPC2 images. Centering even on Camera 1 should therefore be straightforward. The exposure time in the F160W filter will be 300 seconds. Such an exposure time matches well the WFPC2 F606W images for old stellar population (with V-H color of about 3.1). The typical central brightness of spiral bulges is Mu_V ~eq 16.5 that translates into Mu_H ~eq 13.4, i.e., ~ 4.5 * 10^-3 Jansky/arcsec^2. With 300 seconds one should reach a signal to noise of about 100 in the central pixels without saturating (saturation is reached in 3000 seconds). The F606W exposures also allow 5 sigma detection of globular clusters down to V=25.3, assuming the same color this becomes H=22.2, i.e., a flux of 1.35 * 10^-6 Jansky, yielding a S/N=5 in a 300 seconds exposure. The operating mode will be MULTIACCUM to allow for a simple correction for CR events. The guiding mode will be fine lock since gyros operations do not guarantee accurate pointing. We plan to require a proprietary period of 6 months for these data.
