Abstract Using STIS, in 50CCD mode, we will obtain images of 48 damped LyAlpha galaxies. The low read-out noise, small pixel size, large well depth, and high throughput of this configuration allows us to detect any galaxy brighter than m_V=28 to within ~0.5"\ of the quasar. At present there is only one damped system successfully imaged with HST. The targets of our proposed DLA--survey cover a large range of redshift and column density, and the result will be an enormous increase in our understanding of the nature of the damped LyAlpha galaxies and their role in galaxy formation. We will measure impact parameters for all the detected galaxies, and light profiles of the detected continuum emission. These data will enable us to answer two crucial questions that are currently unanswered: beginenumerate em What are the sizes of the damped LyAlpha systems? em What is the connection between the damped LyAlpha systems and the Lyman--break galaxies? endenumerate Taken together this information will provide the whole of the galaxy luminosity function at high redshift, and may be compared against the increasingly sophisticated simulations of galaxy formation, and so test theories of hierarchical galaxy formation. This study will unify absorption- line studies, and faint galaxy imaging studies, thereby allowing a detailed treatment of the history of star formation, gas consumption, chemical enrichment, and assembly in the population of galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7333( 7) - 12/11/98 15:53 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will observe 41 quasars with damped LyAlpha absorption lines in their spectra. Each quasar will be observed for two orbits, with each orbit split into three exposures. As explained in the scientific justification we expect the continuum emission to be extremely compact, so the depth reached will be similar to the depth for a point source. With 4000 sec the detection limit at S/N=5 will be very nearly m_V=29. This reduces close in to the quasar, but the plots of encircled energy in the STIS manual (Fig 14.61) indicate that more than 99.5\ estimate the amount of light from a average quasar in our sample, m_V=18.1, at a radius of 0.5" , we suppose 0.5\ is uniformly distributed between r=0.4"\ and r=0.6" . Our target radius is r=0.5"\ so these assumptions are conservative. We obtain a surface brightness m_V=23.3 mag/arcsec^2 at r=0.5" , which is equal to the sky background. This indicates that to within 0.5"\ of the quasar our detection limit at S/N=5 should be equal to m_V=28.5 for an average quasar, and hence as deep as m_V=28 for nearly all the sample. Real Time Justification ----------------------- No special requirements. As the HST observations become available, we aim to obtain ground based spectra of identified DLA galaxies using slit positions aligned with the quasar/galaxy position angle. For those objects where we fail to identify the DLA galaxy by HST imaging (statistically we expect a very small fraction to be too close to the quasar line of sight) we shall obtain a deep spectrum centered on the quasar in search for possible LyAlpha emission. Five of the 48 systems have redshifts too low for follow--up ground based spectroscopy. Since Visit 03 had the latest plan window of Visits 01-06 as of 08 October, 1997, it was decided by the LRPG and specifically Bill Workman that having Visit 03 come after 01-02 and 04-06 and having Visits 07-10 come after Visit 03 would enforce the links in such a way as to get around the awkwardness of having no syntax of the type AFTER 1-6 BY 60D available. This works fine in the sense that Visits 03-06 all have absolute ORIENTs specified, but Visits 01 and 02 have no such restriction, so they should be monitored to ensure that they do not slip to other plan windows further into the future, or else they may delay the scheduling of Visit 03 and consequently the scheduling of the follow-up Visits 07-10. It is possible, however, that they may be effectively restricted in a way similar to an absolute ORIENT by something such as guide star availability, but on the basis of ORIENT requirements alone, they are not restricted to go at the earliest opportunity although it is desirable for them to do so for the reasons given above.
