Abstract We propose that the chances of measuring D/H reliably are greatly enhanced by targeting selected damped Ly-alpha systems of low metallicity; this strategy circumvents many of the uncertainties which affect previous attempts at measuring D/H. In particular, with our method it will be possible to detect D absorption in many Lyman series lines and the chance of contamination by interloper H clouds is reduced by a factor of > 150. A 21-hour exposure with STIS---requiring a 31 orbit allocation---will allow us the measure D/H to better than 30 percent. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7334( 5) - 03/21/00 20:13 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We intend to observe ONE object, the QSO 2206-199, in the near UV with STIS and the G230M grating for the purpose of detecting Deuterium absorption lines from a Damped Lyman alpha system at z(abs) = 2.0762. The most important absorption lines are in the wavelenth region 2800 - 2860 A. We estimate the flux of Q2206- 199 at 2850 Angstrom to be F_lambda = 1 x 10^-15 ergs/cm2/s/A, based on the observed V=17.3 and the measured spectral index alpha = -0.8. Using the STIS calculator we expect to obtain a signal-to-noise ratio of 9 per pixel with a total integration time of 21 hours. All Lyman lines from Ly7 (at 2850 A) through to the Lyman limit (at 2806 A) are covered in one tilt of the G230M grating (2774-2862 A). Simulations of the predicted absorption lines for two different values of D/H are given in Figure 2 of the phase I proposal. The lines shown in the figure are those which will not be blended with Lyman lines or metal lines from other redshifts systems (and therefore the mo st suitable ones for measuring D/H). The QSO is visible for 53 minutes per orbit. WAVE exposures are required to ensure the maximum accuracy in the redshift measurements of the Lyman lines for comparison with available optical data. We assume that the 4 minute period needed for a WAVE exposure is spread over 3-4 orbits, when the WAVE is also used as a SPYBAL. Subtracting this amount, plus the 6 minutes GS reacquisition, leaves 46 minutes per orbit on source. We therefore require 28 orbits for a total exposure time of 21 hours. A further three orbits are necessary to cover four sets of GS ACQs, target ACQs and target Peak-Ups (due to the SAA), thus bringing the total time requested to 31 orbits. We will obtain parallel WFPC2 observations of blank fields through the F300W filter.
