Abstract We propose to obtain two-band WFPC-2 images of a unique sample of 12 faint blue compact galaxies at redshifts up to z ~ 0.7, that are excellent new candidates for being spheroidal galaxies (such as NGC 205), caught in the act of undergoing a major star forming event. For all but one of these galaxies, emission-line velocity widths from using the Keck echelle spectrograph yield narrow values less than 50 kms. The new HST data will provide the critical measurements of size to derive the expected small masses. Their very blue colors, small sizes, high luminosities, strong emission lines, and low velocity widths all suggest these objects most resemble the local population of extreme star-forming HII galaxies. Without additional star formation, they will fade by several magnitudes after a few Gyrs to reach the low luminosities and surface brightnesses characteristic of spheroidal galaxies. Thus we may be witnessing, in-situ, the last major episode of star formation in today's dwarf, low surface brightness spheroidals. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7339( 3) - 08/24/99 07:22 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We propose to image in the PC a sample of 12 very faint, compact, very blue galaxies for which Keck echelle data have yielded narrow emission-line velocity profiles. Each galaxy will be centered in PC1 and exposed for ~700s (NO CR- SPLIT) in F450W, and ~900s (NO CR-SPLIT) in the F814W filters. Rather than using CR-SPLIT, two dithered images in each band will be taken using POS TAR. The bluer filter will provide rest-frame U to B for most of our sample; F814W will provide rest-frame V on average and allow a common filter for photometry. The longer exposure in F814W is to account for the extreme blueness of the galaxies. These exposures are based on our experience with the previous HST data. The 12 galaxies are slightly extended and the exposures are chosen to ensure our ability to extract light profiles and to detect low surface brightness extended structures. Each target will be allocated one orbit, for a total of 12 orbits for the entire sample. In principle, there are no strict roll constraints since there will be only one primary target per pointing. The primary targets are rare and thus separated enough that a single pointing will not be able to image more than one; moreover, given the compactness of our targets, the PC is chosen to retain the highest spatial resolution with good sampling. In addition to the primary targets, we have tried to include as many other objects of interest as possible, and thus most of the pointings are listed with a preferred orientation.
