Abstract We propose to use the STIS+E140M grating to complete our study of the local Ly-alpha forest at high spectral resolution to better understand the origin and physical conditions of these clouds and their relationship (if any) to galaxies. Our targets are 14 very bright AGN at cz~20, 000kms. Our Ly-alpha cloud program differs in 3 important respects from the Absorption-Line Key Project and subsequent FOS projects: (1) It probes the very low column-density regime of Ly-alpha clouds, which may represent the low-z analogs of the low- metallicity Ly-alpha clouds at high-z; (2) It is restricted to cz<20, 000kms, allowing detailed ground-based studies of nearby galaxies with spectroscopy, H Alpha imaging, and 21-cm maps to very low luminosities; (3) It yields line profiles (Doppler widths, ionH1 columns, components) at a resolution of ~25kms (~6 times the FOS resolution) for cloud model discrimination. Our previous GHRS/G160M work showed that, unlike the high-N_H clouds, the low-N_H Ly-alpha clouds cluster only weakly with galaxies. However, there is no convincing case, among 24 GHRS clouds at cz<20, 000kms examined thus far, for an individual cloud/galaxy association. We detect 3--4 clouds in voids but our current statistics suggest that Ly-alpha clouds ``avoid the voids''. Our proposed observations totalling 250, 000kms of coverage will more than double the number (~60) of low column density Ly-alpha lines, double the number of nearby galaxy halos probed at D<=250 kpc for weak Ly-alpha lines, and double the pathlength through voids. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7345( 10) - 06/05/00 16:29 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ For each target we will obtain spectra at two settings: 1194--1249 Angstrom and 1245--1299 Angstrom in order to obtain cz=19, 000kms of pathlength coverage per target for Ly-alpha absorption lines. These targets have been selected from the Colorado IUEAGN database of SWP spectra (Penton, Shull & Edelson 1994; see also the FUSE Homepage) -- they are among the brightest AGN in the sky, and the brightest not yet observed with HST at cz_em~20, 000kms. While there are quite a few AGN bright enough at 1200Angstrom to obtain high SNR data with STIS, most are at too low redshift to be useful for this project and have been eliminated. If we observed any of our targets with the E140M echelle grating, the time requirement to the same minimum equivalent width limit would be increased substantially (factor of 2), while the pathlength increase would occur only at cz>~20, 000 kms, which is scientifically less rewarding for the studies we have proposed. Our proposed targets are the only AGN not yet observed by us that require <5 orbits to observe with STIS at S/N >~20. The 14 targets we have selected will yield an additional 250, 000 kms of pathlength, which will detect ~60 Ly-alpha forest lines at the observed line density. Approximately 40\ pathlength is through voids, greatly increasing our chances of detecting and characterizing the "void absorbers" relative to the "supercluster absorbers". In addition, these observations will probe the halos of 28 known galaxies at impact parameters b<500 h^-1_75 kpc and 7 galaxies at b<250 h^-1_75 kpc, which will significantly enhance the data in-hand for bright galaxy halos (Bowen, Blades & Pettini 1996; Lanzetta et al. 1993). We we also conduct a ionN5 absorption study along numerous sightlines through our own galaxy's halo afforded by these bright AGN. <=avevmode \epsfxsize 460pt epsfboxsept5.pg1.eps <=avevmode \epsfxsize 460pt epsfboxsept5.pg2.eps Figure 3: Palomar Sky Survey image of an ionH1 rich dwarf discovered near a local Ly-alpha cloud. While the pie diagram in Figure 1 shows no bright galaxies close (< 670 h^-1_75 kpc) to the lowest redshift Ly-alpha cloud found in the GHRS spectrum of MARK335 (above and Figure 2), our VLA HI emission maps of this region discovered a low mass (4.5 times 10^7 h^-2_75 Msun of ionH1), faint (M_R~ -16) dwarf (van Gorkom et al. 1996). This dwarf galaxy is sim 100 h^-1_75 kpc from the Ly-alpha cloud at almost the same velocity (Delta v = 15 +/- 10 kms). <=avevmode \epsfxsize 480pt epsfboxsept12.pg3.eps Real Time Justification ----------------------- We will conduct a 1degrees-radius pencil-beam survey of galaxy redshifts around each sightline, at Las Campanas for southern targets and at either CFHT or the WIYN telescope in the north. Each telescope has efficient multi-object spectroscopy capability to allow prompt sensitive surveys. We will also conduct sensitive 21-cm searches using the VLA for ionH1 potentially associated with the Ly-alpha clouds. Although we are aware that the 21-cm transition cannot detect the low column densities detected by our Ly-alpha survey, it is possible to detect higher column density material associated with tidal tails, low surface brightness galaxies, or intergalactic ionH1 clouds (as we have already done in some cases; van Gorkom et al. 1996). These nearby systems are the only ones for which 21-cm emission mapping is feasible for detecting normal or dwarf galaxies (e.g., in van Gorkom et al. 1996 we successfully investigated two systems in the PKS 2155-304 sightline at cz~5, 100 and 17, 000 kms); the FOS detected Ly-alpha lines are just too distant as will be most of the STIS+E140M detections. Using Fabry-Perot or narrow- band filters, we can also search for H Alpha emission associated with incipient star formation in related low- surface brightness objects.
