DUPREE SMITHSONIAN ASTROPHYSICAL OBS CoI: Ronald L. Gilliland Space Telescope Science Institute Y CoI: Han Uitenbroek Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Abstract We propose continuation of spatially resolved observations of Alpha Orionis ( Betelgeuse; M2 Iab) during Cycles 7 and 8 for which we were originally approved in Cycle 6 (GO 6529). Cycle 6 observations of Betelgeuse with the FOC are scheduled for October 1996 and March 1997. Our UV images of Alpha Orionis ( Betelgeuse; M2 Iab) obtained with the FOC in 1995 (Cycle 5) are the first direct images of the surface of a star other than the Sun. The continuum images reveal a greatly extended atmosphere in the ultraviolet, with diameter of approximately 125 milliarcsec, about twice that in the visible. In addition, a bright unresolved spot is present in the south-western quadrant of the stellar disk. Spectra of the Mg, ii h&k lines obtained during Cycle 5 with the GHRS show enhanced emission in the spot, spatial extent beyond the continuum image to a diameter of at least 220 mas, and a general outflow in the chromosphere. The distribution of photospheric line shifts across the stellar disk reveals the rotation of the star, and suggests the UV spot is located at one of Betelgeuse's poles. We propose here to monitor Betelgeuse twice per year during Cycles 7 and 8 obtaining FOC images, and to use STIS to acquire spectra with higher spatial resolution and larger spectral range then previously available to map motions through the atmosphere, to document its variability, and to confirm our interpretation of the spot as a propagating atmospheric shock. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7347( 6) - 06/11/98 10:15 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Twice in each cycle (7 and 8) use the FOC to obtain F253M images. This will require interactive target acquisition. Therefore we need 2 orbits for each FOC visit allowing a total integration time of about 2000 s split into four dithered exposures with F253M+F220W+F4ND. We expect the signal-to-noise ratio to be approximately 100. Twice in each cycle obtain short slit echelle spectra of Betelgeuse with the medium resolution E230M grating in the wavelength range of 2303 to 3111 Angstrom. Use a small (0.1 * 0.025) slit for maximum spatial resolution. Only with use of this ``available'' slit can we take full advantage of STIS/HST spatial resolution. We include two (non-proprietary) orbits for calibration of this mode. (The supported 0.2x0.063 slit would not provide adequate, real spatial resolution of the inner disk, and would result in uncomfortably high count rates with E230M.) These spectra will require guide star acquisition, target acquisition, a low resolution photometric observation with first order grating G230LB (wavelength range 1685 to 3065 Angstrom, resolution R~700, estimated exposure time 10 s for S/N 100) and CCD detector, and a peak up in a small slit in the first orbit. In the second orbit perform a raster scan with the small slit. For the centered exposure we will obtain S/N ~ 14 in 240s for the continuum at 2.0, 10^-12 cgs. The resolution with E230M is 10 km/s (two pixel) and 800 A are covered in one exposure. The peak per pixel count rate if a Mg II line peaks at 5.0, 10^-11 cgs is 5.0 cts/s. The global count rate would be 3.6x10^4 cts/s (factors of about 10 and 4 below respective limits). With the 0.1 * 0.025 slit we would obtain spectra at +/- 0.075", +/- 0.050", 0.025"" and centered. In one orbit we could devote ~500 seconds to the outer settings, 450, 360s to the intermediate and 240s to the centered case, resulting in spectra in each case with S/N >= 10 in the continuum over 2600- 3000A. This would allow real spatial resolution over the stellar disk (100 mas) at about the 3x3 level and would allow very secure determinations of what the GHRS spectra strongly hint at. However this 0.1*0.025 series of 7 offset spectra would just cover the central disk, and we have evidence from the GHRS spectra that the chromosphere extends to at least twice the size indicated by the continuum disk. Thus, once per cycle, we propose using the 0.2 * 0.063 slit for several rasters over the star, and in particular to the full extent of of the chromosphere using the E230H echelle grating. From these spectra, the circumstellar features and their velocities can be measured as well as line profiles to ascertain atmospheric dynamics. At the higher throughput of this slit we could obtain useful spectra just off the disk edge. With the 0.2* 0.063 slit in place with E230H the expected global rate is 10, 000 cts/s and the peak at 2.3 cts/px (at 5.0, 10^-11 peak flux in the Mg II h&k lines). The 0.2x0.063 slit is also only ``available'' for E230H; we are prepared to do the necessary extra work to develop adequate calibration from related calibration files. The supported 0.1 * 0.09 slit provides neither adequate extent in the spatial direction, nor the desired spatial restriction in the dispersion direction; 0.2 * 0.063 is well matched to our needs. One time only (at the first STIS visit), we want to observe a true point source using exactly the same approach as for Alpha Orionis to calibrate the HST/STIS spatial response function with the 0.1 * 0.025 slit. These calibration data will be made publically available immediately upon acquisition. The HST standard, BD+75d325 at V = 9.25, B-V = - 0.35 seems ideal for this. Cycle 7. STIS: 2 visits of 2 and 3 orbits on A Ori (disk and chromo) 1 visit of 2 orbits on BD+75D325 (for calibration) FOC: 2 visits of 2 orbits each for imaging Cycle 8. STIS: 2 visits of 2 orbits on Alpha Orionis FOC: 2 visits of 2 orbits each for imaging Total: 11 (Cycle 7), 8 (Cycle 8). NOTE: We have (9 May 97) submitted a change request to move one each of the Cycle 8 visits forward to Cycle 7 -- the proposal is submitted with this in place. NOTE: We have (11 June 98) modified the Cycle 7 version to bring forward the last remaining Cycle 8 visits. For reference, our Cycle 6 observations will acquire FOC images and low resolution FOC/objective prism spectra to measure the Mg II and continuum flux to establish the activity level of the star. We have computed expected count rates for the bright star alpha Ori using observed spectra. The rates in comments of the RPS2 file are from use of an FOC prism spectrum of Oct 96. (Probably best for global, the low resolution will underestimate peak at Mg II by a factor of two.) The phase I numbers were based upon a combination of IUE and GHRS spectra. We are comfortably below any applicable rate limtis for alpha Ori. The calibration target, BD75D325 gets closer to the global limit, but its flux is obviously very well known. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Observations should be ~6 months apart during ground-based observing window (September through March). Our first image of Betelgeuse generated a great deal of interest, not only among stellar astronomers, but among those developing interferometers and advancing speckle imaging techniques. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory's IOTA interferometer is planning contemporaneous observations; the ISI infrared array of Townes' group at UC Berkeley, will return to Betelgeuse in the fall of 1996. The SAO radial velocity program (R. Stefanik and D. Latham) has added Betelgeuse to its list for monitoring from mid-August to mid-April; optical observers (K. Krisciunas at Hawaii) recovered Betelgeuse from behind the Sun on August 15, and found that it was comparable in brightness to its value in April 1996. An email distribution list alerting everyone to Betelgeuse observations has been started and it incorporates British and German imaging groups as well as those in the US.
