Abstract We propose to directly test the AGN supermassive black hole paradigm by analyzing the stellar dynamics to determine the masses of the supermassive black holes that are suspected to reside in four nearby radio-quiet AGNs, namely M81, NGC 3998, NGC 4151, and NGC 4278. The motivation for measuring the stellar dynamics in these AGNs with STIS is compelling. In addition to the fact that all contain compact nuclear radio sources, these four radio-quiet AGNs show the best evidence for large central mass concentrations among the eight nearby for large central mass concentrations among the eight nearby radio-quiet AGNs for which we have recently measured the stellar dynamics from the ground in sub-arcsecond seeing. For the purpose of measuring stellar dynamics in galaxies, STIS has two advantages that were not available with FOS (a long- slit capability and a high throughput at the Ca II absorption lines near 8600 Angstrom), and thus STIS significantly increases the efficiency of such observations. Determining the central engine masses in these AGNs will increase (by nearly a factor of two) the number of AGNs whose nuclear gravitational potentials have been mapped (with sufficient spatial resolution). Obtaining a large sample of central engine mass determinations is a crucial first step toward understanding the physics of AGN central engines, including the puzzling difference between radio-loud and radio-quiet AGNs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7350( 55) - 11/18/98 11:51 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ STIS is much more efficient at measuring stellar dynamics in galaxies than FOS since it is much more efficient at target acquisition, has a long-slit capability (FOS required multiple HST pointings to measure a kinematic axis), and has high throughput at the Ca II absorption lines. The 52'' * 0sec point2 slit will be placed along the axis of maximum rotation amplitude, whose position angles, PA (stars), are given in Table 1. This slit width is sufficiently narrow to resolve the kinematic features expected yet large enough to yield reasonable integration times. For NGC 4151, the nucleus will be centered behind the 0sec point4 occulting bar (52 * 0.2F1) to block the strong (mostly nonstellar) light from the nucleus. Target acquisition will be accomplished in two stages, including on-board target acquisitions followed by on-board target acquisition peak-ups (centering the target in the 52 * 0.2 slit to ~ 0sec point05). These galaxies have bright point sources at their nuclei, providing for easier target acquisition using short exposure acquisition images. These images of NGC 4151 will also have scientific value, since we will use them to model the distribution of stellar light, once the images are corrected for emission from the ionization cones (Evans et al. 1993), if needed. Archival WFPC and WFPC2 images have limited use for analyzing the star light since the AGN in this galaxy is very bright and the CCDs in WFPC/WFPC2 have very low dynamic range compared with the STIS CCD. The G750M grating tilt will be set so that the wavelength coverage is 8275 Angstrom \ - 8847 Angstrom. The slit width of 0sec point2 provides a wavelength resolution of 2.2 Angstrom \ = 78 km s^-1. The count rate for the diffuse stellar light is given by C_s = I_Lambda^s S_Lambda^d, where I_Lambda^s is the intensity of the stellar light and S_Lambda^d is the diffuse source sensitivity at 8600 Angstrom. S_Lambda^d is equal to the point source sensitivity S_Lambda^p = 7.6 * 10^14 counts s^-1 pix^-1 per incident unit of intensity (given in the STIS handbook) times the pixel size (0sec point05) times the slit width of 0sec point2. The count rate in the nonstellar continuum also needs to be determined since it is a source of noise. It is given by C_ns = F_lambda^ns S_Lambda^p T_Lambda Epsilon_f, where F_lambda^ns is the nonstellar flux, T_Lambda = 0.75 is the slit transmission, and Epsilon_f = 0.22 is the encircled energy of the LSF. Using the occulting bar for the NGC 4151 observations means that C_ns will be much lower since the bar blocks 98\ nucleus. For all of our proposed observations, read noise and sky noise are insignificant. Thus, an absorption line would have S/N = C_s t/((C_s + C_ns + d)t)^0.5, where d is the dark current of 0.007 counts s^-1 pix^-1. Our scientific goals require S/N = 30 AA^-1. For 0.56 Angstrom/pixel, this corresponds to S/N ~ 22 pix^-1. Since NGC 4278 has lower surface brightness, we will bin along the slit by 2 pixels = 0sec point1. Table 2 (page 9) lists the results of these exposure time calculations with estimates for total visibility time required for these observations in units of time and HST orbits. The fluxes and intensities at 8600 Angstrom \ have been calculated from those at V given in Table 1. The stellar populations have (V-I) ~ 1.4. Ho et al. (1996) found that the UV nonstellar emission in M81 has a spectral index Alpha = 2.0 +/- 0.3 (F_Nu \propto nu^-Alpha). We use this spectral index to extrapolate V_AGN to 8600 Angstrom \ for all three LINERs (i.e., M81, NGC 3998, and NGC 4278). For NGC 4151, we adopt Alpha = 0.5. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Observing M81 in the CVZ requires only 8 orbits, instead of 15 orbits if the CVZ is not used. We note that M81 will lie in the CVZ four times for a total of 75 orbits with a maximum number of orbits per CVZ opportunity of 30. Our request easily fits within these parameters. NGC 3998 lies at the very edge of the CVZ, and would be very difficult (or perhaps impossible) to schedule within it. We request one orbit to obtain spectra of a velocity template star. Since the slit width is 0sec point2 and the PSF has FWHM 0sec point1, the template star and galaxy will illuminate the slit differently. This must be calibrated in order to avoid systematic errors. We will obtain template star spectra with the star placed at slightly different positions along the slit width. Combining this library of template spectra, using the galaxy light profile as a guide, will provide a corrected template spectrum. During phase II we will choose a star in the CVZ that allows for these observations to fit within one orbit. The STIS IDT has noticed that CCD fringing appears in the flatfields for Lambda > 7000 Angstrom. However, using STIS preflight data, the STIS working group at NOAO (including Green and Bower) have been able to successfully remove this instrumental effect from test data to better than 1\ fringing is not sensitive to any small shifts in the grating position between science and calibration exposures.
