Abstract These STIS spectra will constrain the small-scale geometry and dynamics of high- velocity, circumnuclear gas in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068. STIS medium resolution gratings will be used to map emission-line profiles in clouds from two species sensitive to different excitation and dust optical depth. These maps will be combined with extensive ``datacubes" of optical line profiles that we have obtained from the ground with Fabry- Perot and integral field imaging spectrometers. We have used these datacubes to establish a first-order kinematic model. The model constrains the outflow velocity and geometric orientation of the filaments, allowing our proposed spectra to be sensitive to local conditions and dynamics. In particular, models of central-source and shock photoionization (the latter from bow- shock interactions between interstellar clouds and relativistic wind or jet plasma) predict significant differences in the relative fluxes and profiles of UV resonance and semi-forbidden lines. We will use the low- resolution STIS gratings to establish UV line fluxes to compare with the predictions of these diagnostic models. The results will provide important constraints on more distant quasars whose emission- line regions are too compact for HST and other high-resolution telescopes to resolve, and which therefore possess far fewer dynamical constraints from other wavebands. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7353( 11) - 09/05/00 09:33 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ STIS/CCD and MAMA exposures will be stepped around the galaxy nucleus in the NLR. The CCD spectra will map the spatio-kinematic variations of the H-beta and [O III] lines, and their ratios. All offsets are defined relative to the point- like nucleus (using F28X0LP to approximate the WFPC2 791W archive image), then a precise peakup is made through the 50x0.1 aperture. These very short exposures use the MIRROR. Offsets of a few arc-seconds are made to the gas filaments. Exposures are set to obtain at least S/N=12 in important diagnostic emission lines, mostly using the 52x0.2 slit. The first visit obtains three 1- orbit G140L exposures stepped across the NLR to provide deep UV line fluxes that are diagnostic of gas excitation mechanisms. UV coverage at these points is completed in visit 3 over 2 orbits using G230L. In the second visit, five deep 1-orbit G430M exposures will be stepped across the NLR at the same locations as visit 1 to link UV line fluxes to kinematical variations. The spectra are binned by 2 pixels in the dispersion direction because the lines are broad but faint away from compact features. The rest of visit 3 continues the visit 2 exposure sequence for two more locations with G430M. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- A duplication check turned up proposals GO 5763 and 6308, which use the FOC long-slit for SHORT (627 sec) exposures AT UNSPECIFIED PA's, centered at 3440 Ang. These use a narrower slit and shorter exposures (typically 1/10 ours), so are much less sensitive than our sum. Moreover, we are using M gratings at optical wavelengths. At the Phase I deadline there were GTO STIS exposures listed, but these no longer appear during a duplication check. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Data Distribution Paper Products: YES Media: DAT Blocking Factor: 10 Ship To: PI_Address Ship Via: Email: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7353( 11) - 09/05/00 09:33 - [ 3] TARGET LIST Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 NGC1068- GALAXY, SPIRAL, RA=02H 42M 40.71S +/- 0.03S, J2000 V=+1139 V = 14.4 OFFSET SEYFERT, NLR, JET DEC=-00D 0' 48.17" +/- 0.02", E(B-V) = 0.7+/-0.1 PLATE-ID=0085 F-LINE(5007)=9+/-1e-15 W-LINE(5007)=20 Coordinate Source: Comments: See ETC result No. 22902 to justify exposure S/N 2 NGC1068-SEQ1 GALAXY, SPIRAL, XI-OFF=0.4" +/- 0.01", ETA- J2000 V=+1139 V = 14.4 SEYFERT, NLR, JET OFF=0" +/- 0.01", FROM 1 E(B-V) = 0.7+/-0.1 F-LINE(5007)=9+/-1e-15 W-LINE(5007)=20 Coordinate Source: Comments: See ETC result No. 22927 to justify exposure S/N 3 NGC1068-SEQ2 GALAXY, SPIRAL, XI-OFF=0.2" +/- 0.01", ETA- J2000 V=+1139 V = 14.4 SEYFERT, NLR, JET OFF=0" +/- 0.01", FROM 1 E(B-V) = 0.7+/-0.1 F-LINE(5007)=9+/-1e-15 W-LINE(5007)=20 7353( 11) - 09/05/00 09:33 - [ 4] Visit: 01 Visit Priority: Visit Requirements: ORIENT 262D TO 264D On Hold Comments: Additional Comments: Exposures ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Exposure| Target |Instr | Oper. | Aper |Spectral|Central| Optional |Num| Time | Special Number | Name |Config| Mode |or FOV |Element |Waveln.| Parameters |Exp| | Requirements ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 NGC1068-OFF STIS/C ACQ F28X50O MIRROR ACQTYPE=POINT 1 6 S ONBOARD ACQ FOR 2 SET CD III ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2 NGC1068-OFF STIS/C ACQ/PEA 52X0.1 MIRROR 1 20 S ONBOARD ACQ FOR 3, 4 SET CD K Comments: Setup on continuum peak, which is 0."13 N of (obscured) nucleus ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3 NGC1068-SEQ STIS/F ACCUM 52X0.2 G140L 1425 1 31 M SAVE OFFSET NLR POS TARG 2 UV-MAM -0.2, 0.0 EXPAND A Comments: ETC result No. 15200 verifies that the MAMA exposures won't exceed count rate limits.
