Abstract Many active galactic nuclei channel energetic particles into jets that feed powerful extended lobes of radio emission; others remain quite compact. Both classes of active galaxies are suspected to be powered gravitationally by the accretion of surrounding material onto a massive black hole. Convincing evidence of this has been found with HST for the prototype of the jet-producing galaxies, M87, in the form of a bright nuclear gaseous disk in rapid Keplerian rotation, whose motion indicates a central mass ~ 2x10^9 Msun. Using WFPC2, we have found similar arcsec-scale gaseous disks in 12 compact AGN without jets. We now propose to use STIS+G750M to make long- slit spectral observations of the emission line gas in these bright Liners with powerful compact flat-spectrum radio sources. We will take advantage of the spatial resolution to isolate and examine the broad HAlpha components, already known to exist. We will model the velocity distributions to see if rotation is basically Keplerian, to see if there are departures from simple rotation, and to determine or set limits on the masses of black holes and distributed mass. Finally, we will study the emission-line regions of these galaxies in combination with high resolution radio images made with the VLBA, to learn about the evolution and interaction of the hot gas and the relativistic plasma, and to try to determine why these AGN seem unable to produce jets. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7354( 7) - 12/11/98 15:59 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ The 12 targets will be observed for one orbit each with STIS using the G750M grating. The slit will be placed along the major axis of the gaseous disk (within 15 degrees) and stepped to several parallel positions. The offsets, slit width (0.1 or 0.2 arcsec), binning, and integration times will be selected for each disk using the WFPC2 emission line images that I obtained in cycle 5, with the goal of good coverage of the disk and optimum signal to noise at the chosen positions. Guide star acquisiton, target acquisition, peakup, and the first visit overhead and readout of a CR- split image will take about 27 minutes, leaving 25 to 30 minutes for integration, less 1 minute per subsequent CR- split readout and 1 minute if the slit is switched. As an indication of how well each disk can be observed in the requested single orbit, I have used the WFPC2 images to estimate the signal to noise of the NII6584 line in an 0.1 by 0.1 square arcsec area centered on the peak, using the entire available time of 25 to 30 minutes. I have used the WFPC2 filter curves with the known systemic velocities of the galaxies and typical NII6548 : HAlpha : NII6584 flux ratios to convert DN/sec in the continuum-subtracted line images to cgs fluxes for each of the three lines. I have similarly converted the subtracted-off continuum to cgs flux densities. I computed the signal to noise over the entire NII6584 line, including the total (line plus continuum) flux in the noise, but only the line flux in the signal. I assumed a linewidth of 1000 km/sec. (This assumption is not critical; it affects the contribution of the continuum, sky, and dark counts to the noise, but the line noise is constant and dominant, and the integrated line flux is constant.) Binning of 4 was assumed. The disks are a combination of diffuse and point- like emission. I have treated them as diffuse, neglecting the minor light loss from the point-like component, which occurrs where the signal to noise is greatest. The SNs thus determined for the NII6584 line are: 407 for NGC3998, 209 for NGC4594, 108 for NGC5077, 78 for NGC6500, 69 for NGC1497, 48 for NGC5635, 45 for NGC2911, 44 for NGC5675, 42 for NGC3894, 37 for IC989, 32 for NGC0984, and 32 for NGC5318. One observation per target is clearly over-kill for the goals of these observations, so several slices of each disk can be observed. The numbers understate the case, since the NII6584 line will be used along with the NII6548 line and the HAlpha line, with astrophysical constraints imposed, to determine velocities and dispersions. The SN will be less further out in the disk, but this can be compensated for by greater binning and smoothing and use of the 0.2 arcsec slit. Velocities gradients are expected to be smaller further out, so this lessening of resolution will not result in much loss of useful information. The disks are about 1 arsec in size, so each should be well covered by observations of several slices. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None. VLBA observations have been made by collaborator Dayton Jones (JPL). The radio images will show how the radio plasma affects or is affected by the gaseous disk.
