Abstract We propose to utilize the unique capabilities of HST/NICMOS to carry out a study of the near-infrared properties for several proto-planetary and young planetary nebulae. Objects of this class display a number of enigmatic features that have prevented a full understanding of post-asymptotic giant branch stellar evolution. Because of their unique status and important location on the HR diagram, it is critical that the properties of proto-planetary and young planetary nebulae be understood. Because molecular hydrogen emission can probe both shocks (and therefore winds and jets) and the photodissociation region through ultraviolet-pumped near- infrared emission, several objects will be carefully imaged in molecular hydrogen. We will also image an object in carbon monoxide emission. Near-infrared carbon monoxide emission likely arises from a warm circumstellar disk (as in young stellar objects), but the presence of such a disk needs to be confirmed. Several deep broadband images will be acquired to examine clumping and departures from perfect symmetry. We intend to place our understanding of these objects into the bigger picture of post-asymptotic giant branch evolution through complementary HST/NICMOS observations of several related objects. These data will be tied into ongoing ground -based near- and mid-infrared observational efforts. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7365( 11) - 01/19/98 10:39 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Each object on our list (a total of 8) has somewhat different observational requirements. The images will go deep enough to find detailed structure at all flux levels. Except in specific cases, we have assumed that the bulk of the faint emission is diffuse, and not in unresolved clumps (as is indicated by ground-based images). For continuum dominated line observations, care is taken that the continuum data is sensitive enough so as to not degrade the line data during subtraction. The loss of S/N caused by subtraction has been included in our time estimates. The continuum shape will be modeled either with ground- based spectra or NICMOS narrowband measurements at several wavelengths. All flux estimates are based on ground observations. For Phases 1 and 2, we have been conservative in our sensitivity requirements to make sure the science goals will be met. Background observations are assumed to be required for all data taken at Lambda > 1.7 microns. We will primarily use Camera 2. Camera 1 is used mostly for 1.1 micron data and at 1.6 micron for compact objects. Camera 3 is used for known extended emission (in combination with Cameras 1 and 2 in the core regions). Some mosaic images are required. The time to reach a reasonable S/N in the faintest flux of interest (typically 2 to 5) has been computed using the NICMOS Exposure Time Calculator using MULTIACCUM and one read. Total times (less overhead) are based on equal time measuring the background and continuum. Since we are most interested in low flux levels in objects that often have bright peaks, some parts of the data will have very high S/N. Calibration of these regions will be limited by the absolute calibration errors of the telescope system, which is sufficient. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Our team of co-Is for this program have amassed considerable experience in the study of post-AGB stellar evolution. We have been carrying out considerable ground-based optical, near-IR, and millimeter-wave observations of these types of objects, in part as preparation for this and following NICMOS proposals. The observations proposed here will be supplemented with ground-based deep near- infrared images (University of Hawaii 2.2 meter telescope and the ``QUIRC'' 1024 by 1024 near-infrared camera), sensitive near-infrared spectra (university of Hawaii 2.2 meter telescope and the KSPEC spectrometer), high spectral resolution IRTF/CSHELL data, and mid-infrared data (MIRAC2). These data are either already acquired, or are part of ongoing observational efforts. Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- Our performance estimates and mapping strategy are based on current knowledge. How we do the mapping is related to the level of expected residual images after saturating pixels. We have taken a conservative approach in general. However, it will be important to revisit the observing strategy for individual objects based on what is determined during on-orbit tests of sensitivity, residual images, and other factors relating to instrument performance. Note: Scheduling for Visit 1 and Visit 7 are limited because of a required orient. If this is a serious problem, then we can attempt to reduce the constraint. This will cause a sacrifice in data quality for some observations. Second note: The exposure level special requirement POS TARG is often used to start the object in a position at the start of an exposure so that subsequent dithers will map the object correctly. Final note: This version replaces that submitted 14 May 1997. That version attempted to correct for an apparent RPS2 bug by putting POS-TARG in the PATTERN-ORIENT frame.
