Robert O'Dell Rice University N CoI: John Bally University of Colorado N CoI: John Stauffer Center for Astrophysics N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Abstract We will use STIS and NICMOS to obtain multi-wavelength images of a sample of circumstellar disks seen as silhouettes against the bright emission-line background of the Orion Nebula. These new data will greatly complement our pending Cycle 6 WFPC2 study, where the disks will be observed at 6565 Angstroms (H Alpha). In Cycle 7, we will make use of the newly available instruments to obtain images for all disks at 3727 Angstroms ([OII]) and 5007 Angstroms ([OIII]) using STIS, and at 1.876 microns (Pa Alpha) using NICMOS for two of the disks. The combined Cycle 6 and 7 data will provide unprecedented spatial resolution imaging of the disks (at [OII], ~20 AU, compared to disk sizes ~50-1000 AU diameter), across an extended wavelength range, allowing us expand our sensitivity to disk surface density by an order of magnitude. Therefore, we will be able to examine the radial structure of the disks in great detail, and over a wide spatial extent. Results from our Cycle 4 WFPC2 imaging program indicate that the disks are truncated at their outer edges: the new data will allow us to examine this truncation and the inner disk radial profile in much greater detail, and therefore provide strong observational constraints on the putative truncation mechanism. We will also obtain deep near-IR continuum images of the edge-on disk Orion 114-426 in order to detect the central star directly, or at least place a much stronger lower limit on the line-of-sight extinction towards it, and thus also on the total disk mass. Finally, long-slit spectroscopy of the reflection nebula in the edge-on disk Orion 114-426 will be obtained in order to indirectly spectrally type the hidden central star. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7367( 10) - 01/14/99 11:50 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Begin revision 16.07.97: The integration time for the STIS ACQ images of 117- 421 have been changed from 60 seconds to 5 seconds, so as not to saturate on the star. For the STIS ACQ, we use the star 117-421/JW366/PC006 which is an M4.5-M5 dwarf, with magnitudes of V=19, I=15. Since this intrinsic (V-I) colour for such a star is about 3m, an excess E(V-I) of 1m is implied, in turn implying a reddening of Av=2 or so and E(B-V) of 0.7. Putting the appropriate parameters into the STIS ETC (i.e. Kurucz M4V template, E(B-V)=0.7 galactic reddening, gain = 4e-/ADU, CR-SPLIT=1, STIS CCD + 28X50LP) and normalising using V=19, I get an S/N of 50 in 2.7 seconds, and a peak flux of 1000e-. However, using a normalisation of I=15 (which should be equivalent, taking into account the spectral type and reddening), an S/N of 50 is achieved in only 0.44 seconds, i.e. 4 times quicker. I don't understand this difference, although closer study of the ETC seems to indicate that it uses badly wrong (V-I) colours for M dwarfs. Nevertheless, it is clear that we can use an integration of 5 seconds and be ok in either case. The V=19 normalisation gives an S/N of 70 and a peak pixel of 1950e- in 5 seconds, while the I=15 normalisation gives an S/N of 178 and a peak pixel of 11900e-. Both give more than enough S/N for a good ACQ, and neither come close to saturating the CCD (saturation at 120, 000e - at gain=4). More extensive testing of the likely parameter space in the ETC confirms that we should have enough integration time and yet not saturate under all conditions. End revision 16.07.97: Begin revision 11.07.97: Coordinates for the 121-1925 and 218-354/210-349 fields have been changed to allow primary/parallel imaging of the two sources in the STIS and PC fields simultaneously. Previous coordinates for 121-1925 were wrong, and the 218- 354/210-349 coordinates were not designed for parallel imaging of 121-1925. Also the ORIENT of the 218-354/210-349 visit has been changed to 103.45D to permit the parallel imaging. End revision 11.07.97: The proposal consists of several different types of observation: i. STIS CCD direct imaging of all the silhouette disks in the [OIII] and [OII] emission line filters to trace the disk structure accurately at the highest possible spatial resolution. Eight orbits are used to cover eight silhouette disks and other nearby sources (with careful placement of the the field centres). Orion 114-426 is the key source in our sample and is also located in a fainter region of nebulosity: two orbits are allocated to it. Four dithered 120s images are taken in [OIII] and five dithered 900s images in [OII]. The dithering is intended to allow us to retrieve the full spatial resolution. Orion 121-1925 is in a very faint part of the nebula, too faint to permit useful [OII] imaging. Five dithered 460s [OIII] images are taken. For each of the remaining fields, four dithered 60s [OIII] images are taken and five dithered 360s [OII] images. Additional WFPC2/PC [OIII] images of 218-354 are obtained in parallel to the primary STIS observations of 121-1925, thus acting as a safety observation. Since the STIS [OIII] filter has a red leak, the bright central star of 218-354 may degrade the STIS [OIII] images, and thus PC [OIII] images are also taken (this filter is known not to leak, as is also true for the STIS [OII] filter. Finally, reversing the previous situation, images of 121-1925 in Halpha are obtained using the PC in parallel to the primary imaging of 218-354 with STIS. Since 121 -1925 lies in a faint part of the nebula, these additional Halpha data can be combined with similar data to be obtained under the Cycle 6 program of Bally et al. (6603) to give improved signal-to-noise. ii. STIS CCD long-slit low- resolution spectroscopy of the reflection nebula in Orion 114-426 in order to spectral type the central star. A nearby offset star (7 arcsec away) is used for an ONBOARD-ACQ, which centres the star in the STIS 52X0.2 slit. A POS TARG is then used to offset this slit centre on top of the reflection nebula in Orion 114-426. The slit is placed parallel to the disk plane, thus intercepting most of the light from the nebula. An orientation perpendicular to the disk would have some advantages, but is not schedulable. After the acquire and offset is done, the remainder of the first orbit is used to obtain two 980s exposures with the G750L grating. At the beginning of the second orbit, the nebula is moved slightly along the slit, and three 870s exposures are taken again with G750L. iii. NICMOS emission-line imaging of two silhouette disks (114-426 and 218-345) in Paschen Alpha, 1.87um, and continuum (F100M, F165M, and F222M) imaging of 114-426 to trace the structure of the disks at longer wavelengths and thus closer in to the central star, to image the reflection nebula at long wavelengths, and to probe as deeply as possible for the central star. iv. Parallel WFPC2 direct imaging (when possible) in emission-line and continuum filters, in order to continue the large-scale mapping of the Orion Nebula. Where possible, images in F502N, F656N, F658N, and F547M are taken, with integration times on the order of 2x500s, 2x200s, 2x200s, and 2x60s (two images of each taken for cosmic ray rejection). We have specified the HST ORIENT for each of our eleven visits, in general to meet the WFPC2 parallel requirements, but also in some cases in order to align the primary STIS or NICMOS FOV to observe several sources at once, avoid certain bright stars, or set the slit along the correct orientation. Fortunately, for eight of the eleven visits (Visits 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11), the constraints and requirements are such that a single ORIENT of 60D can be used, implying that these visits could be scheduled in a single block. This ORIENT gives a large (9 week) window for observations in January-March 1998. The remaining three visits have ORIENTs of 73D, 283.45D, and 20D. The 73D ORIENT visit (Visit 8) has a schedulable window of 8 weeks in January-March 1998, while the 283.45D ORIENT visit (Visit 2) has a total of 6 weeks (in three blocks) in September-November 1997. The final ORIENT of 20D (Visit 5) results in a narrow schedulable window of just 11 days in January 1998: this ORIENT is required to ensure that the bright OB stars of the Trapezium remain outside the STIS CCD FOV. Real Time Justification ----------------------- No real-time observations required. Calibration Justification ------------------------- No additional calibration observations required. Additional Comments ------------------- Astrometry: All fixed target positions were determined from a mixture of ground - and space-based optical and infrared imaging, all in the common FK5 reference frame. The HST positioning is done in the GSC v1.1 frame of reference, and it is known that there are small offsets between the GSC and FK5 frames. The offset between the reference frames could be on the order of a few arcsec. For most of the STIS CCD imaging, this would not be a major problem. For the STIS CCD spectroscopy, an ONBOARD-ACQ is used to centre a reference star in the slit, and then a well-determined relative offset is used to move to the source. For the NICMOS imaging however, the NIC1 FOV is small enough that a misplacement by a few arcsec could be a problem. The offset between the FK5 frame and the local GSC v1.1 frame cannot be determined from the available DSS/GSC plate material, since it is saturated in the Orion Nebula. (As a minor consequence, no DSS/GSC plate number ID is given for the targets, since coordinates could not be determined that way.) Therefore, we have taken another approach as follows. We searched for all known GSC stars within a 60 arcmin radius of the centre of the Orion Nebula. We also searched for all known PPM and HIPPARCOS/TYCHO catalogue stars within the same region, the latter two catalogues being known to be in the FK5 system. We then searched for common stars between all of the catalogues, and calculated the mean offsets in RA and dec between the samples, removing obvious outliers. The mean offsets between the TYCHO and PPM catalogues were +0.07+/-0.17 arcsec in RA, +0.14+/-0.18 arcsec in declination (60 stars in common). This demonstrates that both are very close to the common frame, i.e. the FK5 frame. The mean offsets between the TYCHO and GSC v1.1 catalogues were +1.37+/-0.15 arcsec in RA, and -0.38+/- 0.15 arcsec in dec (50 stars in common). The TYCHO positions lie east and south of the GSC v1.1 positions, e.g. a position of 05 35 17.000 -05 23 00.00 in the GSC v1.1 frame becomes 05 35 17.091 -05 23 00.38 in the TYCHO frame. There were no clear trends in these offsets with RA and dec or distance from the centre of the nebula, and so we take them to be a good representation of the reference frame offsets for our targets. Thus, all positions for our target sources have been transformed from the original FK5 frame into the GSC v1.1 frame by subtracting 0.091 seconds of time in RA, and adding 0.38 arcsec in declination. Open issues: There are several open issues and general concerns which we list here for completeness. Certain problems must be dealt with before the observations can be made, and these require information either from auxilliary material (e.g. astrometric solutions) or from the SMOV activities (e.g. the offset between the STIS and WFPC2 apertures). However, none of these issues should prevent the observations being entered into the long-range plan, since all imply relatively small corrections at most. Open issues: i. STIS CCD to PC aperture offset In general, the positions of our parallel WFPC2 observations are not crucial, since they are just being used to enlarge the existing wide field mosaic of the region. However, in one orbit, we require precise positioning of the STIS CCD FOV (both in x, y and ORIENT) in order to ensure that a specific source is simultaneously imaged on the PC. We have used the pre -launch estimates of the positional and angular offsets in order to position the sources accurately, but this will require updating once the offsets are known more accurately from the SMOV acivities. ii. STIS spectral flats Although RPS2 has automatically inserted wavecals during the STIS spectroscopy, there are no spectral flat-fields included. These will presumably be needed due to the fringing problem at long wavelengths in STIS spectroscopy, since the Orion Nebula is full of bright emission lines in this window. iii. ORIENT-related constraints As discussed above, eight of our eleven visits are fixed at an ORIENT of 60D which gives a good 9 week window of schedulability, and two of the other ORIENTs also give 6-8 week windows. We have one ORIENT that results in just an 11 day window in January 1998, and thus if that makes the scheduling too difficult, we will have to reassess our source-related constraints. iv. Concatenated visits Taking a conservative approach, we have scheduled most observations of different sources as separate visits, each incurring a full guide star acquisition at the beginning of an orbit. Several of the fields are less than 2 arcmin apart however, and it should be possible to concatenate their visits amd save time by just doing reacquires. This might slightly increase the available integration time for some sources. v. NICMOS coronagraph We originally intended to image the 218-354 silhouette using the NIC2 coronagraph in order to block out the bright central star. However, given the problems with the coronagraphic spot moving around inside NICMOS, we have presently shelved those observations. Additionally, there is some concern that unless sources can be precisely and repeatably positioned behind the spot, it will be very hard to obtain matching measurements of a PSF star also hidden behind the spot. Thus, we have replaced the coronagraphic observations with plain MULTIACCUM imaging, which we will use to accurately measure the profiles of the source (star + disk) and PSF reference (star). However, it may be that the coronagraphic performance will be better than presently predicted, thus allowing us to use it and suppress the bright central star: we should reassess this approach after the SMOV results are analysed. vi. NICMOS coronagraph again The mosaic scheme presently used to image 114-426 and 218-354 on each quadrant of NIC2 may have to be slightly altered once the position of the coronagraphic spot has settled. vii. Additional parallels We have included all desired WFPC2 parallels to the STIS and NICMOS primary observations, but have not included NICMOS parallels to the STIS primaries or vice versa. Since the Orion Nebula is full of interesting sources, we intend to add those additional parallels if possible and if agreed to by the STScI. Given the location and ORIENTs of the primary observations, these additional parallels are unlikely to overlap with other programmes. The NICMOS parallels to the STIS primaries will be roughly 7 arcmin southwest of the centre of the nebula, while STIS parallels to NICMOS primaries will be to the east and southeast of M43. Minor problems and concerns: i. NICMOS buffer dumps NICMOS buffer dumps seem to occur at unpredictable times during times of target visibility: it seems as though the buffers could have been completely cleared during the previous occultation period, but this seems not to be happening properly. ii. WFPC2 parallel diagnostics Parallel WFPC2 observations create occasional diagnostics from RPS2 along the lines of: "Parallel exposures extend the time required for this coordinated parallel set by 71 secs". These appear not to create any problems for the observations, and have been ignored. Other notes: i. Use of STIS subarrays All STIS CCD imaging in filters 28X50OII and 28X50OIII is done in subarray mode, reading out 1064x600 pixels (cf. 1064x1044 pixels for the full array). This subarray covers the full 50 arcsec along the x axis, and 30 arcsec along the y axis, i.e. slightly wider than than the 28 arcsec coverage in that dimension. This reduced sub-array readout enables us to fit a total of 12 images in one orbit without time-wasting buffer dumps. One concern we have here is whether or not we will be able to properly calibrate the CCD data without all the overscan rows and columns that would be taken in full-field mode. ii. Cosmic ray rejection We have not used the CRSPLIT option for cosmic ray rejection in either the STIS or WFPC2 imaging. In some cases, we have explicitly requested two equal length observations at one position, which achieves the same result. However, in general for the STIS primary observations, we have assumed that we will be able to remove cosmic rays from the several (four or five) images taken on each field, where each image is slightly dithered from the previous. Since this is for recovery of the full resolution, these dithers include a non-integer part, thus perhaps making the cosmic ray rejection a little harder. In principle, we could CRSPLIT the STIS images, but at the cost of additional read-noise, which does play an important part in our overall signal-to-noise budget. Also, taking two images instead of one would entail wasting time with buffer dumps as discussed above. iii. STIS [OIII] filter leak The STIS 28X50OIII filter has been found to suffer from a red leak around 1 micron. Unfortunately, this creates a significant problem for our [OIII] imaging of the silhouette disks. The central stars are young, low- mass, and hidden by dust, thus are very faint at optical wavelengths. In the WFPC2 survey images of the silhouette disks, the central stars are barely detected. However, these same stars are quite bright in the near-infrared, where the STIS [OIII] filter leaks, and therefore the stars will appear in the centre of the disks and make it considerably harder to measure the disk alone. A rough quantification of the problem (using the known 1 micron magnitudes of the stars and the now known properties of the [OIII] filter leak and CCD response) indicates that the central stars will produce roughly 2-20 times (depending on the combination of central star flux and local nebula background) more photoelectrons per second than the nebular background which creates the silhouette. Spread over a few pixels, the typical stellar "surface brightness" will then be roughly equal to or brighter than that of the background nebula. In principle, it should be possible to use WFPC2 for the [OIII] imaging instead, and in fact, we have been able have scheduled WFPC2 [OIII] imaging of 218-354 in parallel with the primary STIS imaging of 121-1925 (Visit 2). However, in general there are two caveats. The throughput of the WFPC2 + [OIII] filter is roughly 2-3 times lower than that of the STIS + [OIII] filter equivalent, and therefore it would take longer to go as faint. The [OIII] nebula background is relatively bright, and the required exposure times for STIS + [OIII] are short, roughly 5 minutes. This would require roughly 20 minutes per field with WFPC2 + [OIII]. The second problem is that we do require STIS for the [OII] imaging, since the nebula is much fainter in [OII], and the additional STIS throughput is invaluable. The problem would arise if STIS was used for the [OII] imaging and WFPC2 for the [OIII], since an additional guide star acquisition (8 minutes) would be required to switch from one instrument to the other. Thus, to obtain the [OII] imaging with STIS and the [OIII] imaging with WFPC2, additional observing time would be required. At present, the STIS + [OIII] imaging is contained within the same orbit as the STIS + [OII], but if the former were to be done with WFPC2 + [OIII], roughly 4 additional orbits (2 fields of 20 minutes per orbit) would be required. The PC is required for the highest possible spatial resolution and its 37x37 arcsec field of view is roughly equivalent in area to that of the STIS 28x50 arcsec imaging field, thus no particular savings could be realised by getting multiple sources in one field: they are rather too far separated. However, since several of the fields are less than 2 arcmin apart, SAMs could be used instead of full guide star acquisitions to save save some time when switching fields. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7367( 10) - 01/14/99 11:50 - [ 3] Data Distribution Paper Products: Media: DAT Blocking Factor: 10 Ship To: PI_Address Ship Via: Email: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7367( 10) - 01/14/99 11:50 - [ 4] TARGET LIST a) Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 NGC1976-DARK ISM, HII REGION, RA = 5H 35M 11.259S +/- 0.1", J2000.0 SURF(V) = 15.0+/-2.0 -STIS-FIELD- PROTOPLANETARY DISK, DEC = -5D 24' 25.92" +/- 0.1" SURF-LINE(5007)=6+/-2e-12 ONE STAR FORMING REGION, STELLAR CLUSTER, OB Comments: STIS CCD 28X50 target position for Orion 114-426, centred on the dark disk. The ORIENT is chosen such that when the primary target is in the STIS aperture (7.5 arcsec off-centre along the XPOS (long) axis of the imaging section, 218-354 is in the PC1 aperture of WFPC2 (also 7.5 arcsec off-centre). This allows parallel WFPC2 imaging of the latter while STIS is imaging the former. The parallel imaging of 218-354 is done in the [OIII] filter as a safety observation, since the prime STIS [OIII] observations of 218-354 will suffer from the red leak in the STIS [OIII] filter, letting the very bright central star through. When the PC -> STIS CCD offset is known accurately after SMOV calibration, slight changes to the ORIENT and target position might be needed. This ORIENT gives 3 windows of 7, 21, and 13 days in Sep, Oct, Nov 97, i.e. a total of 6 weeks. ORIENT set by desire to image 121-1925 in the PC1 FOV in parallel. This in turn places the two primary sources roughly along the diagonal between the long (XPOS) and short (YPOS) axes of the STIS 28X50 FOV. The required ORIENT for the parallel 121-1925 imaging is 103.45D, which gives a series of windows in March-May 1998 totalling six weeks. Other possible ORIENTs include those which align the two sources along the STIS long axis (68D [58- 78D, 60% SCHED gives 2.5 month window, Jan-Mar 98] and 248D [238-258D, 60% SCHED gives 2 x 1 month split over Aug-Oct 97]) and an ORIENT of 60D which gives a 9 week visibility window in Jan-Mar 98, and good position for WFPC2 parallels to west of inner section. There is no ORIENT constraint due to the source itself, and the specified value of 60D gives a good position for WFPC2 parallels to the north, between M42 and M43, adding more signal-to-noise to the data obtained in this faint region in Visit 9. The ORIENT results in visibility window of 9 weeks in Jan-Mar 98.
