Abstract We propose to obtain deep diffraction-limited images of two highly collimated protostellar jets in the v=1-0 S(1) line of molecular hydrogen at 2.122 micron using NICMOS. HH111 is a well-known jet visible at optical wavelengths, and the new NICMOS data will be analyzed in conjunction with existing WFPC2 imaging. HH212 is a newly discovered jet, obscured by its parent molecular cloud core and only detectable at near-IR wavelengths. The high degree of symmetry seen in both jets makes them crucial template objects for studying the earliest phases of jet formation, since the underlying ``patterns'' have not been erased by strong environmental effects. The new images will however enable us to study the interaction of the jets with their surroundings, where the H2 line traces shocks at the interface between the jet and the ambient gas. In particular, we will examine the hypothesis that molecular outflows are created by the entrainment of gas into the wings of jet bow-shocks. The Cycle 7 data will be used as the first epoch in proper motion study: by measuring transverse velocities as small as 40km/s over the NICMOS mission lifetime, we will study the dynamical evolution of the jets in comparison with theoretical models. Finally, we will use deep continuum images to determine the structure of faint reflection nebulae seen around the jet driving sources, in order to determine whether these are cavities excavated by the molecular outflows, or the upper surface of a large-scale disk around the source. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7368( 17) - 01/28/98 10:01 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Begin revision 27.01.98: After receiving data from Visits 6 and 7 of this proposal, it became clear that there is a slight problem with NIC2: column 128 seems not calibrate sometimes, leaving it dead. Since HH212 is nominally aligned along the centre of the NIC2 y-axis, this could create a significant problem. Thus, the starting positions for all five targets in Visit 1 have been shifted by 18 pixels (1.36 arcsec at 0.0757 arcsec/pixel) to the west of nominal. This moves the jet centreline off the detector centreline, and also moves the jet centreline to the opposite side of the NIC2 detector to the coronagraphic hole. In principle the position offsets should be in RA and dec, since the jet has a non-zero position angle, but in practice a 0.1s shift in RA only achieves the goal with only negligible impact on the positioning along the jet axis. However, since the jet is up to 30 arcsec wide in the large bowshocks, we have to be careful not to move too far off the centreline. Note also however that the slight "warping" of the inner jet with respect to the outer, and the requirement to use a 2.2 degree offset ORIENT for guidestar reasons, will also ensure that the main straight and narrow inner section of the jet is not aligned accurately with the y-axis of the NIC2 array. End revision 27.01.98: Begin revision 05.12.97: In order to take advantage of the reduced impact of NIC buffer dumps, the individual integration times for the HH212 images were made longer, from 192 sec to 256 sec. To fit into a single orbit, we also reduced the number of skies per orbit from 4 to 3, spacing them out along the mosaic strip appropriately. End revision 05.12.97: Begin revision 18.11.97: Two major changes have been made to the proposal shortly prior to execution: i. The separate visits used for imaging the jets in H2 have been concatenated into single visits of five and six orbits each for HH212 and HH111 respectively. The previous strategy of separate visits, each one orbit long, tied together with a SCHEDULE WITHIN 0H requirement, simply would not schedule. Making these into one long visit, with a new target at the beginning of each orbit, does work, and represents no change at all in the resulting data. ii. All POS TARG exposure level special requirements have been changed simply reversing the signs, e.g. the previous standard POS TARG move between sequential positions of +0.3445,+8.9934 arcsec has now become -0.3445,-8.9934 arcsec. This change was implemented after it was very belatedly realised (after another proposal we are involved in partially failed) that the sense of a POS TARG move is to move a point on the sky relative to the fixed detector, rather than our previous assumption that a POS TARG moved the detector relative to a fixed point on the sky. This was very poorly documented in the NICMOS handbook, and if this had gone unnoticed, our jet maps would have been relatively useless (particularly so in the case of HH111). End revision 18.11.97: Begin revision 11.07.97: The default ORIENT of 69.2D for HH212 does not result in available guide stars for all visits/orbits: visit 3 is without a guide star at that ORIENT. Although this visit could be done at a different ORIENT than the other five, it would make accurate full-resolution mosaicing difficult, since rotation terms would need to be included. We need to find the nearest ORIENT that results in guide star availability for all visits, and then alter the POS- TARG steps accordingly to step along the jet crab-wise, remaining on the jet axis at all times. The nearest ORIENT which results in guide star availability for all visits is at roughly 58D, i.e. 11D off the nominal jet axis. With NIC2 always centred on the jet axis using the crab-wise POS-TARGing technique, the parallel cameras NIC1 and NIC3 are always off-axis. The NIC3 centre lies roughly 80 arcsec from the NIC2 centre: with an offset angle of 11D, this results in NIC3 lying 15 arcsec of the jet centre-line. Compared to the 51 arcsec FOV of NIC3, this is not a major problem. However, the NIC1 centre is 33 arcsec from the NIC2 centre, and the 11D offset results in NIC1 being 6 arcsec off the jet axis. Since the NIC1 FOV is only 11 arcsec, this means the jet axis will not be in the NIC1 FOV. A compromise solution has been implemented. At an ORIENT of 71.4D (i.e. 2.2D off the default jet axis), the only visit without a guide star is the sixth visit, the NIC3 continuum imaging of the reflection lobes. All five NIC2 H2 imaging visits have guide stars at that ORIENT (albeit only single guide stars). Since the NIC3 continuum visit effectively stands alone, this compromise ORIENT of 71.4D for visits 1-5 is good. At 2.2D off the default and with NIC2 centred on the jet axis, NIC3 will lie only 3 arcsec off the centre-line, and NIC1 only 1.3 arcsec off. Thus, we have implemented the offset ORIENT of 71.2D for visits 1-5, and left visit 6 at the default ORIENT of 69.2D. In order to keep on the jet axis centre-line, the POS-TARG steps used to step along the jet have been slightly altered. All previous POS-TARGs were +0.0,+9.0 arcsec in the NICMOS +x,+y coordinate frame. Now we make small crab- wise corrective steps in +x to remain on the centre-line: the inter-image step is now +0.3445,+8.9934 arcsec. The POS-TARGs to sky positions have been kept as before, since these small corrections are irrelevant for them. End revision 11.07.97: The following observing description reflects the change made from our original Phase II proposal, in which we used NIC3 and extensive micro- scanning to obtain both high sensitivity and diffraction-limited imaging. With NIC3 presently out of action, this proposal has been reworked to use NIC2 instead. The original NIC3 description is appended below, for completeness. With NIC3 out of action, we must use NIC2 instead. This has several pros and cons: Pro: We no longer have to micro-scan on sub-pixel positions in order to acheive the desired diffraction-limited resolution, greatly simplifying our proposal. The on-orbit thermal background of NICMOS is a factor of ten lower than predicted pre-launch, thus improving our signal-to- noise (in principle). Con: The smaller field-of-view of NIC2 means that we will have to have a greater number of steps along the jet, and thus end up with a reduced integration time for each point along the jet. Also, the large pixels of NIC3 were used to obtain the best signal-to-noise on low surface brightness emission. Combined with the shorter integration times at any point, our sensitivity is reduced by roughly a factor of 3.8. In our original NIC3-based plan, both HH212 and HH111 were imaged along their complete lengths in H2, with one additional orbit being used for each object to image the reflection nebulae at the base of the jets. In our revised plan, different strategies are taken for the two jets. For HH212, we again have elected to image the entire jet as before, albeit at lower sensitivity. There are several reasons for this. First, since these data are supposed to be the first set in a proper motion study, we should cover as much of the jet as possible in the first epoch. Second, a decision to (say) image only half of the jet at double the integration time, would only make sense if it was the fainter, outer part of the jet. It is the inner knots and bow shocks that are in fact the most interesting, and they are relatively quite a bit brighter. Thus, as detailed below, we again use 5 orbits to image the whole length of HH212 in H2, and the final orbit to image the base reflection nebulae in continuum. For HH111, we have elected to image half of the jet with double the integration time in H2, and (presently) with no continuum imaging of the reflection nebulae. HH111 is substantially fainter in H2 than HH212, and thus requires the additional time to deliver reasonable results. New NIC2-based strategy for HH212: HH212 is 250 arcsec long, and we assume the NIC2 FOV to be 18x18 arcsec (in fact, it is 19.2x19.2 arcsec, but we have trimmed for safety, and to account for the minor vignetting of NIC2). We step along the whole jet in half-array (9 arcsec) steps, thus giving us complete overlap for uniform S/N, good registration, and bad pixel registration. This then gives 28 positions to cover the jet: we assume 30 again for safety, and to ensure that the jet is fully covered by the full S/N part of the scan. Thus, to cover 30 positions in 5 orbits requires 6 positions per orbit. Since the NIC2 FOV is no wider than the jet, we will need separate skies: they cannot be created from the on-source data itself as we had planned for NIC3. Our limited experience with NICMOS ERO data is that sky levels can change from from orbit-to-orbit, particularly if there is an SAA event between. Thus, we feel that enough skies should be taken in each orbit to make a clean sky for that orbit's on-source data. If the combination of skies over orbits works, we would gain some additional S/N. Thus we have planned for 4 skies per orbit, making then a total of 10 positions to be imaged per orbit. We will use the MULTIACCUM mode with sequence SPARS64 and NSAMP=5, i.e. giving an integration time per position of 192 seconds. The use of the MULTIACCUM technique and the fact that we have a factor of two overlap between positions means we will be able to reject CRs easily. In each orbit we can fit 6 on-source images, stepped by 9 arcsec, and 4 skies, i.e. a total of 10 positions per orbit. We could get away with just 3 skies, making a total of 9 positions per orbit, but with an integration time of 192 seconds per position, we would end up with a lot of wasted time at the end of each orbit. Increasing NSAMP to 6 would increase the integration time to 256 seconds, but then the 9 positions would not fit into one orbit. We could also use a different MULTIACCUM sequence to get an intermediate time, such as STEP32, NSAMP=14 (223 seconds) which would allow us to fit all 9 positions in a single orbit, but then we would be generating a total of 378 images per orbit (including parallel observations with NIC1 and NIC3: see below), and thus would be incurring 4 NICMOS buffer dumps per orbit, costing almost ten minutes, and thus again spilling over into the following orbit. Note: we had planned to approach this problem in a different manner, by using straight ACCUM mode, taking pairs of images at each position for CR rejection, and using the NREAD=9 option for read-noise reduction. However, the maximum integration time that would work was 100.0 sec per image, i.e. 105.518 sec after adding the NREAD=9 overhead. A pair of images thus give 200.0 sec effective integration time per position, marginally more than the 192 sec we will now use. The use of ACCUM mode also results in fewer images and no buffer dumps. However, the deciding factor was advice from Chris Skinner of the STScI that ACCUM mode in NICMOS appears not to be functioning properly, and results in uncalibratable detector patterns being imprinted on the data. Thus, we appear to have no option but to use MULTIACCUM mode. Therefore, we have gone with the MULTIACCUM, SPARS64, NSAMP=5, 192 sec option and have filled the orbit properly by taking a fourth sky. In any case, this will improve the sky S/N and the rejection of sources in the sky images somewhat. These sky images are taken some 40 arcsec off the jet to get well away from it, and we interlace the skies with the on-jet images for best tracking of the background level. I.e. we start with the first sky, then take two on-jet images, then the second sky, then two more on-jet images, then the third sky, the final two on-jet images, and then the final sky. All skies for Orbits 2, 3, 4, and 5 are taken on the east side of HH212 to avoid brighter stars and reflection nebulosity in the west side. The skies for Orbit 1 are taken on the west side, again to avoid stars: the positions for the skies are additionally slightly tweaked for the same reason. Note: with 4 skies now being used, we could split them, two on each side of the jet. This would help with rejection of sources in the large NIC3 field, some of which will remain on the jet in some cases, even having moved 40 arcsec away. To be decided. Parallel imaging in NIC1 and NIC3 are used to obtain images in the [FeII] 1.64um line and deeper H2 2.12um images of diffuse nebulosity respectively. We use exactly the same MULTIACCUM, SPARS64, NSAMP=5, 192 sec sequence for the parallels as for the primaries. Since the step size for the prime NIC2 imaging is 9 arcsec, the NIC1 (11 arcsec FOV) parallel images form a continuous mosaic along the jet, covering all but the SW bow shock. The parallel NIC3 images similarly cover the entire jet apart from the SW bow. Thus, in total at each position, we obtain 5 NIC2, 5 NIC1, and 5 NIC3 images, i.e. 15 images per position. With 10 positions per orbit, we then get 135 images per orbit, which requires one NICMOS buffer dump halfway through the orbit. Nevertheless, our standard sequence of 10 positions still fits within a single orbit. This single orbit block is simply repeated 5 times to cover the whole length of HH212. Finally, our deep continuum imaging of the centre of HH212 has been kept as NIC3 rather than switching to NIC2: despite the lower spatial resolution of NIC3, the field -of-view and sensitivity to diffuse low-surface brightness structures is more important. We have however reduced the number of positions imaged to just three, since dithering cannot be used to recover the diffraction limit at 1.6 microns. Again, however, a MULTIACCUM sequence is used to help identify and eliminate CRs. One sky position is taken on either side of the on-source position: the second sky is allowed to DROP TO GYROs to avoid incurring a second GS ACQ in the orbit. Parallel images are obtained in NIC1 (F164N, [FeII]) and NIC2 (F187N, PaAlpha): while NIC1 does not actually sit on anything very interesting, NIC2 sits on the end of the first bright bow shock in the SW, allowing us to look for possible ionized gas at its tip. New NIC2-based strategy for HH111: As noted above, our strategy for HH111 is to image only roughly half of the jet, but with double the net integration time per point. We plan to image the optically visible section of the jet from knot S to the source, and then into the counter-jet as far as ZH. A final section of H2 imaging covers the bright bow shock V and knot T. We use all six orbits for the H2 imaging, and thus presently, no continuum imaging of the base reflection nebulae is planned. The position angle of HH111 introduces another complication, namely that only a very limited visibility window is available if we line up the three NICMOS arrays along the jet for parallel imaging. At the required ORIENT, the visibility is only 2 days, far too short for safety. To alleviate this problem, we have increased the SCHED parameter from the default 30% to 90%, which results in a much more reasonable 1 month window for HH111. However, the available orbit length decreases as SCHED increases, in this case by roughly 4 minutes. Thus, in principle, we could decrease the integration times by a small amount compared to those used for HH212, and then use the same basic orbit plan. Unfortunately, the next available MULTIACCUM integration times shorter than 192 sec are in STEP sequences which output many more images per sequence, and thus create data dump problems. The next shorter integration time which does not dump more data is 128 sec, i.e. a full 30% shorter than we use for HH212. We have solved this problem by only taking 5-source + 3-sky images per orbit. By decreasing the number of source and sky frames taken per orbit by one each, we can in fact increase the integration time to 256 sec, using the SPARS64, NSAMP=6 sequence. This 8-image pattern fits into the slightly shorter orbits well. Identical MULTIACCUM sequences are used for the parallel NIC1 and NIC3 observations as described below. As for HH212, we step along HH111 in half-field (9 arcsec) steps, starting at knot S. The first two and a half orbits step east along HH111, imaging a total of 13 positions, ending at knot ZH. Then we offset one quarter of a field (4.5 arcsec) back to the west, and for the next two and half orbits step back along the jet to the west 9 arcsec at a time, taking another 12 positions, ending near S again. Thus, for almost half the jet, we obtain more than double the integration time used for HH212. The sixth orbit is used to image the bright bow shock V and knot T, taking three images stepped by 9 arcsec in one direction, then reversing, offsetting 4.5 arcsec, then taking another two images again stepped by 9 arcsec. At the end of each 5 on-source positions, we move off 40 arcsec to the side of the jet and take the 3 skies spaced by 18 arcsec, i.e. a whole FOV, parallel to the jet. For Orbits 1, 2, 3, and 6, we step to the north of the jet axis to take the skies; for Orbits 4 and 5, we step to the south of the jet axis. These positions are chosen to avoid bright stars. The overheads imposed by SAMs from the source to the sky and back are long enough that we would spill over the orbit if we interlaced the skies and on-jet images. Thus to save time, we do all the skies at the end of each orbit. As for HH212, we take parallel data with NIC1 and NIC3 ([FeII] and deeper H2) while mapping the jet in H2 with NIC2. The NIC1 [FeII] data covers all of the optically visible jet, although does not quite extend to cover the source of the jet. Original NIC3-based strategy: We will make mosaics along each jet using NIC3 and the F212N H2 filter, with scanning patterns designed to recover the full diffraction-limited resolution at 2.122 microns. Coordinated parallel observations in NIC2 (F187N, Paschen Alpha) and NIC1 (F164N, [FeII]) along the jet are also included by using fixed ORIENTs which line up all three cameras along the jet axis. We have implemented a complex scan pattern that achieves several goals as described below. We must use POS TARGs to implement this algorithm since no predefined NICMOS dither PATTERN achieves our goals. We have however checked that no additional overheads are incurred by using POS TARGs rather than a PATTERN. (a) We take a series of 9 NIC3 images scanning 3 arcsec in +x at a time transverse to the jet. This results in a central strip 27 arcsec in width ( = 51.2 arcsec [NIC3 FOV] - 24 arcsec [8 x 3 arcsec]). This is wider than the maximum jet width, and thus ensures the jet is detected in every image, maximising on- source signal-to-noise. However, since more than half the width of the FOV is blank in any given image, we can also median stack the 9 images to create a blank sky. As we move across the jet 3 arcsec at a time, we also move slightly in y as well, adopting a saw-tooth pattern with +/- 1 arcsec offsets. This ensures that a single bad pixel does not trail across the x strip, and offers additional flat-fielding accuracy and source rejection in the sky construction. (b) After the 9 image transverse scan is completed, we move 25 arcsec (i.e. half the NIC3 FOV) parallel the jet axis, then repeat the 9 position scan transversely back across the jet. This half-FOV overlap allows us to accurately mosaic the two strips together. (c) This two-strip sequence is then repeated in five sets along the jet axis, in order to cover the full jet length of 250 arcsec. (d) In a given 9 position transverse strip, the x and y offsets are actually chosen carefully not as integer pixel offets (i.e. 3 arcsec is 15 NIC3 pixels), but also to include sub-pixel offsets which scan out a 3x3 micro- dither within the integer pixel position. The 0,0 position of this 3x3 micro- dither is the lower-left corner of the integer pixel, while the other sub-pixel positions are at 1/3 and 2/3 of the pixel size. When the reverse 9 position transverse strip is made, it adopts the same 3x3 sub-pixel micro-scan technique, but now offset from the first 3x3 positions by 1/2,1/2 pixels. This then gives us another 9 different positions. Thus, overall, we should have 18 individual sub-pixel positionings for every point on the jet, allowing us to retrieve almost the full diffraction-limited resolution of the HST at 2.122 microns from the originally undersampled NIC3 pixels. Of course, it is not likely that the HST will be able to offset to precisely the required positions, but adding a small random element to each position would probably only add to the resolution recovery rather than detract from it. (e) Also built in to the whole micro-scanning, multiple position technique is the need to remove bad pixels, flat-field inhomogeneities, and cosmic rays. The latter is important since we use simple ACCUM integrations of 100 seconds each rather than the more complicated MULTIACCUM sequences which would remove cosmic rays. However, the overheads and limited choices of integration time associated with MULTIACCUM would render our proposal much less efficient. Also, we have checked our ground -based H2 imaging to show that we will stay a long way from saturation in a 100 sec ACCUM image. Each 2x9 transverse strip across the jet fits into a single orbit. Since five such strips are required to cover the jet, five orbits are used for each jet, ten orbits in total. Since the total scan length along each jet is in excess of 2 arcmin, the initial guide stars will definitely fall off the FGSs at some point. In order to be unambigously certain about having guide stars, we have thus made each orbit a separate visit, with a full GS ACQ scheduled at the beginning of each orbit/visit. However, in order to be sure and obtain the full mosaic along each jet with the minimum loss of positional fidelity, we have requested that all five orbits/ visits for each jet be carried out contiguously, i.e. over five back-to-back orbits. We also image each jet for one further orbit, using NIC3 and the F160W filter for deep imaging of the reflection nebulae at the base of the jet. These observations also use POS TARGs to create a sub-pixel stepped mosaic with built-in sky observations. We start one full field-of-view to one side of the jet for an initial sky image. We then move onto the jet and take four images, slightly dithered on sub-pixel steps in order to regain the full resolution. Finally, we move off the jet one full field-of-view to the other side and take a final sky. Since the distance between the first and last sky is more than 2 arcmin, the guide star will fall off the FGSs, invoking another GS ACQ. However, this is not required, since the second sky can be taken without tracking, i.e. we can use the DROP TO GYRO option in order to save time. Real Time Justification ----------------------- None Calibration Justification ------------------------- None Additional Comments ------------------- Our desire to obtain parallel science with NIC1 and NIC2 leads our need to specify and exact fixed ORIENT for both jets. For HH212, the chosen ORIENT of 69.2D results in a schedulable window of 9 weeks, and therefore we feel that requesting this fixed ORIENT is workable. However, the corresponding fixed ORIENT for HH111 of 322.45D results in a schedulable window of only 2.5 days. (The other possible ORIENT, 180 degrees away, results in no window at all). We have been able to relax the constraint considerably by setting the SCHED requirement to 90% for HH111. This opens up a window that is 4 weeks wide, much more satisfactory. However, we recognise that this ORIENT constraint for HH111 remains a problem. If it subsequently turns out that this very small window results in the observations being effectively unschedulable, we will rework the proposal accordingly. At present, HH111 is aligned along +y, i.e. the axis joining all three cameras. If we have to rework the proposal, we will align the jet with the +x axis instead, i.e. orthogonal to the present orientation, but still keeping the detector array square with respect to the mosaic scan directions. If an ORIENT of 52.45D is used, the schedulable window opens up to 6 weeks without having to rais the SCHED requirement. It must be noted that we fully expect to slightly rework this proposal anyway, once the true orientations of the NICMOS cameras are known: we rely on knowing those accurately in order to align the mosaics with the jet axes, since POS TARGs (in detector +x,+y coordinates) are used to mosaic relative to the jet. Thus, once that information is available from the SMOV phase, and once it is known whether or not the three NICMOS cameras are confocal, we will rework the proposal as appropriate. Another important issue concerns the availability of guide stars in the two fields. It is already known the the HH111 field has very few (but some) available guide stars, and since HH212 is only 1 degree from HH111, it is also likely to contain few guide stars. Should be followed immediately by Visit 2. The chosen orient exactly lines up HH212 along the NIC2 +y axis assuming the generic pre-calibration +U3 to NICMOS +y offset of 225 degrees. The orient should be altered when the true offset angle has been measured during the SMOV phase. Actually, the crucial angle is not that between +U3 and +y for a single detector, but between +U3 and the effective +y angle connecting the centres of all three NICMOS cameras. Using this then ensures that all three arrays cover the jet as we scan along it. This ORIENT results in a relatively large schedulable window of 2.5 months. Best if immediately following H2 imaging visits. The chosen orient exactly lines up HH212 along the NIC2 +y axis assuming the generic pre-calibration +U3 to NICMOS +y offset of 225 degrees. The orient should be altered when the true offset angle has been measured during the SMOV phase. Actually, the crucial angle is not that between +U3 and +y for a single detector, but between +U3 and the effective +y angle connecting the centres of all three NICMOS cameras. Using this then ensures that all three arrays cover the jet as we scan along it. The DROP TO GYRO special requirement is used since the final sky position image is more than 2 arcmin from the first sky image. Without allowing a DROP TO GYRO, another GS ACQ is required, wasting too much time. Since the sky frame need not be accurately tracked, we can DROP TO GYRO safely. In addition, we can use the NO REACQ qualifier, since no more images are to be taken after the final sky image. Note: this visit is the only one carried out at the default ORIENT of 69.2D. Visits 1-5 are carried out at the offset ORIENT of 71.4D to ensure guide star availability for all those visits. However, that ORIENT does not give a usable guide star for this visit. The +2.2D change in HST roll angle should be possible during the occultation period between visits 5 and 6.
